53 T And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these parables, he departed thence. 54 And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works? 55 Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Ma'ry? and his brethren, James, and Jo'şĕs, and Si'mon, and Jū'das? 56 And his sisters, àre they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things? 57 And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without hon'our, save in his own country, and in his own house. 58 And he did not many mighty works there, because of their unbē-lief'. A CHAP. And when Pē'tér was come down out of the ship, he wâlk'ed on the wâter to go to Je'şús. 30 But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was ǎ-fraid ginning to sink, he crie Lord, save me. and, be, saying, 31 And immediately Je'şús stretched forth his hand and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith wherefore didst thou dôûbt? 32 And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased. 33 Then they that were in the ship came and wór'ship-ped him, saying, Of a truth, thou art the Son of God. 34 And when they were gone over, they came into the land of Ģĕn-něş'a-rět. 35 And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round ǎbout', and brought unto him all that were diseased; 36 And besôught him that they might only touch the hem of his garment; and as many as touch'ed were made perfectly whole. CHAP. XV. God's commandments. 6 And honour not his father or his móther, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the command ment of God of nóne effect by your tradition. 7 Ye hypocrites! well did E-sa'ias proph'e-sy of you, saying, 8 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and hon'oùreth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. But in vain they do wór'ship me, teaching for doctrines the command'ments of men. 10 And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand: 11 Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man. 12 Then came his disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Phar'i-sees were offended, after they heard this saying? 13 But he answered, and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Fà'ther hath not plant'ed, shall be rooted up. 14 Let them ǎlōne: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch. 15 Then answered Pē'tér and said unto hini, Declare unto us this par able. 16 And Jesus said, àre ye also yet without understanding? 17 Do not ye yet understand, that HEN came to Je'şus scribes and whât'sō-ev-ér entereth in at the T of belly, and is 21 T Then Je'şus went thence, and departed into the coasts of Tyre and Si'don. 22 And, behold, a wom'an of Ça'nă-ǎn* came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have měrcy on me, O Lord, thou son of Da'vid; my dâughter is griev'ous-ly vexed with a devil. 23 But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besôught him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us. 24 But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Is'ra-ěl. 25 Then came she and wór'shipped him, saying, Lord, help me. 26 But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children's bread, and to căst it to dogs. 27 And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their màster's table. 28 Then Jesus answered, and said unto her, wom'an, great is thy faith! be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour. 29 ¶ And Je'şus departed from thence, and came nigh unto the sea of Găl'i-lēē; and went up into a môûn'tain, and sat down there. 30 And great multitudes came unto him, having with them those that were lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and çăst them down at Je'şus' feet, and he healed them: 31 Insomuch that the multitude wondered, when they saw the dumb to speak, the maimed to be whole, the lame to wâlk, and the blind to see: and they glorified the God of Is'ra-ěl. 32 Then Jesus called his disciples unto him, and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days, and have nothing to eat: and I will not send them away fast'ing, lěst they faint in the way. 33 And his disciples say unto him, Whence should we have so much bread in the wilderness, as to fill so great a multitude? 34 And Jē'şus saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? and they said, Seven, and a few little fishes. * In poetry pron. CHAP. XVI. Sad'du-cées came, and, tempt The sign of Jō'năs. HE Phar'i-sees also with the ing, desired him, that he would shew them a sign from heaven. 2 He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather; for the skyt is red. 3 And in the morning, It will be foul weather to-day; for the sky is red and lôŵ'ér-ing. O ye hyp'ocrites! ye can diş-çern' the face of the sky; but tan ye not diş-çirn' the signs of the times? 4 A wicked and ǎ-dŭl'tér-ous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jo'nas. And he left them, and departed. 5 And when his disciples were come to the other side, they had forgotten to take bread. 6 Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed, and beware of the leaven of the Phăr'i-sees, and of the Săd'ducēēs. XVII. The transfiguration of Christ. AND after six days Jesus taketh Pē'tér, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high môûn'tain ǎpàrt, 2 And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light. 3 And, behold, there appeared unto them, Mō'şĕs, and E-li'as, tâlk`ìng with him. 4 Then answered Pe'tér, and said unto Je'şus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tab'ĕr-na-cles: one for thee, and one for Mo'şes, and one for E-li' ǎs. 5 While he yet spake, behold a bright cloud overshadowed them: and, behold, a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him. 6 And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore ǎ-fraid'. 7 And Jesus came and touch'ed them, and said, Arīşe, and be not ǎ-fraid'. 8 And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Je'şus only. 9 And, as they came down from the môûn'tain, Jē'gus chàr'ged them, saying, Tell the vision to no man, | to Ca-per'na-um, they that recei ved until the Son of Man be risen again' tribute money came to Peter, and from the dead. said, Dóth not your Mà'ster pay tribute? 10 And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes, that E-li'as must first come? 11 And Jesus answered and said unto them, E-li'as truly shall first come, and restore all things. 25 He saith, Yes.* And when he was come into the house, Je'şüs prevented him, saying, What thinkest thou, Si'mon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? 12 But I say unto you, that E-li'as of their own children, or of strangers? is come âlready, and they knew him 26 Pe'tér saith unto him, Of strännot, but have done unto him what'-gers. Jesus saith unto him, Then so-ev-ér they listed. Likewise shall àre the children free. also the Son of Man suffer of them. 13 Then the disciples understood, that he spake unto them of John the Băp'tist. 14 T And, when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, knēël'ing down to him, and saying, 15 Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for oft times he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water. 16 And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him. 17 Theu Jesus answered and said, 'faithless, and pĕr-verse' generation! now long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me. 18 And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour. 19 Then came the disciples to Je'şūs apart, and said, Why could not we çast him out? 20 And Jesus said unto them, Bccause of your un-be-lief'; for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, as a grain of mus'tárd seed, ye shall say unto this môûn'tain, Remove hence to yonder place, and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. 21 Howbeit, this kind goeth not out but by prayer and făst'ing. 22 And, while they ǎbōde in Găl'i-lēē, Jē'sus said unto them, The Son of Man shall be betrayed into the hands of men: 23 And they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be raised ǎgain'. And they were exceeding sorry. 24 And when they were come 27 Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and, when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee. CHAP. XVIII. Christ teacheth to be humble. Aciples unto Jesus, saying, Who 2 And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, 3 And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be çon-vert'ed, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. 4 Whosoever, there'fore,shall hŭmble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 5 And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name, rēcēï'veth me. 6 But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about' his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea. 7 Wo unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but wo to that man by whom the offence cometh' 8 Wherefore, if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and çást them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life hâlt or maimed, rǎther than having two hands, or two feet,to be çăst into ĕvérlăs❜tingfii a * Yis. |
