dhammam desetvā rājānaṁ pañcasu silesu patitthäpesi. Rājā pasanno Bodhisattam rajjena pūjetva mahantam sakkāraṁ akāsi. So rajjaṁ tass' eva datvā katipāhaṁ vasitvā va9 „appamatto hohi, mahārājā“ 'ti ovaditvā ākāse uppatitvā Dandakahiraññapabbatam eva agamāsi. Rajâpi Bodhisattaɛsa ovade thito dānādīni puññāni katva yathākammamm gato. Sattha imam dhammadesanaṁ aharitvā saccāni pakāsetvāa jatakam samodhānesi: (Saccapariyosane” ukkanthitabhikkhu arahatte patiṭṭhabi),,Tadā rājā Anando ahosi, suvanṇamoro pana aham eva" 'ti. Tattha evam evā ti evam eva, nūnā 'ti parivitakke nipāto ekamsey pi vaṭṭati yeva, Vede han ti Videharaṭṭhissaram, Mithilaggahan ti Mithile gehame Mithilayam gharam pariggahetvā vasamanan ti attho, ājaññāa ti kāraṇākāraṇajānanakā, yathā hamsa Vinilakan ti yatha ime hamsā mam Vinilakaṁ vahanti evam eva vahantîti. Hamsapotaka tassa vacanaṁ sutva kujjhitvā „idh' eva naṁ pātetvā gamissāmā" 'ti cittaṁ uppādetvâpi,,evam kate pitā no kim vakkhatîti" garahabhayena pitu santikam netva tena katakiriyaṁ pitu acikkhimsu. Atha naṁ pitā kujjhitvā „kiṁ tvaṁ mama puttehi adhikataro yo mama putte abhibhavitvā rathe_yuttasindhave viya karosi, attano pamāṇama na jānāsi, imaṁ ṭhānam tava ago caro, attano mātu vasanaṭṭhānam eva gacchae" 'ti tajjetvā dutiyam gatham āha:

Tattha Vinila 'ti tam namenâlapati, duggam bhajasîti imesam vasena giriduggam bhajasi, abhūmim tāta sevasîti tāta girivisaman nāma tava abhūmim tam sevasi upagacchasi, etam mātālayam tavan ti etam gamantam3 ukkāraṭṭhānaṁ āmakasusānaṭṭhānañ ca tava mātu ālayaṁ gehaṁ vasanaṭṭhānam tattha gaccha 'ti. Evan tam tajjetvā,,gacchatha, nam Mithilanagarassa ukkārabhūmiyaṁ yeva otaretvā etha" 'ti putte āṇāpesim. Te tathā akaṁsu.

Sattha imam dhammadesanam" āharitvā jātakaṁ samodhānesi:,,Tadā Vinilako Devadatto ahosi, dve hamsapotakâpi° dve aggasāvakā, pitā Ānando, Videharājā pana aham evā“ 'ti. Vinilaka-jātakam". Dalhavaggo paṭhamo.

THE RAJOVĀDA - BIRTH.

In (times) past, while Brahmadatta reigned in Bără

nasi, Bodhisatta having been conceived in the womb of his First Queen, after receiving the gift of conception came safely out of (his) mother's womb. On the day he was named they called him Prince Brahmadatta. He having gradually grown up went to Takkasila at the age of sixteen years, and having (there) acquired accomplishments in all arts, and being, by the death of (his) father, established in the kingdom, he reigned with justice (and) impartiality. Not being prejudiced by inclination and the like he gave (his) decision. While he thus reigned with justice, (his) ministers also settled litigations with justice. Litigations being settled with justice, there were none who brought about false lawsuits. In consequence of the nonnoise on account of lawsuits

existence of these (suits, all) ceased in the king's court. The ministers sitting by day in the law-court (but) seeing no one coming for the purpose of (getting) a decision, go away. The court attained the state of being superseded. Bodhisatta thought: as I reign with justice none come for the purpose of (getting) a decision, the noise has ceased, the court has attained the state of being superseded, now it behoves me to examine my own faults;' on learning that I have this (or that) fault I will discard it and live virtuously. From that time seeking for some one
