Read the Prayers.

Questions---How did God purchase to himself an universal Church? [Ans. By the precious blood of his Son Jesus Christ.] Did not our Saviour ordain a holy ministry to govern this Church? [Ans. Yes.] What ministers did our Lord himself ordain? [Ans. Apostles.] Can any besides Christ ordain Apostles? [Ans. No.] What Ministers did the Apostles ordain to be at the head of each particular Church [Ans. Bishops.] Have we bishops now? [Ans. Yes.] Do they ordain priests and deacons? [Ans. Yes.] What are the weeks called in which the bishops do this? [Ans. The Ember weeks.] How do they ordain ministers ? [Ans. Ry laying their hands on them and praying.] What are priests and deacons ordained and consecrated for? [Ans. The sacred ministry.] What is meant by the sacred ministry? [ns. The holy service of God.] Is it not of great consequence that the bishops should make choice of fit persons for the holy functions of the Church, and that those who are ordained should do their duty? [Ans. Yes.] Should not the people pray to God in behalf of the ministry? [Ans. Yes.] Suppose it should unfortunately happen that one who is ordained does not live a life according to his holy office, should the people of his parish forsake their proper Church on this account? [Ans. No.] When he performs the rites of the Church according to his ordination, is he not God's minister? [Ans. Yes.] Should his people think of the Man, or of the Minister, when they are joining in public worship? [Ans. The Minister.]

Instruction.---By the High Court of Parliament is meant the House of Lords, and the House of Commons. The laws are made by the Parliament and confirmed by the King, and they are called Acts of Parliament. Their Session means the time the two Houses of Parliament sit for public busi

ness.

Read the Prayer for the High Court of Parliament.

Questions.---Should not Christian congregations pray in this manner for those who make the Laws? [Ans. Yes.] Can any people make good laws without the blessing of God? Ans. No]

Read the Rubrick.

The Praver for all Sorts and Conditions of Men. Instructio In the Litany we pray for all sorts and con

ditions of men, therefore this prayer is not used when the Litany is read. If you remember what you were taught concerning the Litany, you must understand this prayer.

Questions.---What should we pray God to do for all sorts and conditions of men? [Ans. To make his ways known unto them.] What should we pray God to make known to all nations? [Ans. His saving health.] What is that? [Ans. Salvation through Christ.] For what should we especially pray? Ans. The good estate of the Catholic Church. When is the Church in a good estate? [Ans. When it is guided and governed by God's Holy Spirit.] How should those who call themselves Christians hold the faith? [Ans. In unity of spirit, in the bond of peace, and in holiness of life.] Would it be not a happy thing if all Christians were to hold the same opinions? [Ans. Yes.] Would it not be happy if they were all to live in peace with one another? [Ans. Yes.] Would it not be a happy thing if all who call themselves Christians were to lead righteous lives? [Ans. Yes.] Who should we commend to God's fatherly goodness? [Ans. All those who are afflicted in mind, body, or estate.]

A Prayer that may be said after any of the former.

Instruction.---This prayer reminds us that sin is a state of slavery, and that from the infirmities of our nature we cannot be in a state of freedom without the constant help of divine grace.

Questions.---Is not sin a state of slavery? [Ans. Yes.] Who are sinners slaves to? [Ans. Satan.] How can we be delivered from this slavery? Ans. By the grace of God].

Read the Thanksgivings one after another, stopping at the end of every one to ask the Questions as before.

A General Thanksgiving.

Instruction.---A general thanksgiving signifies one which is suitable to all mankind.

Questions.---Do we deserve the mercies and blessings God bestows upon us? [Ans. No.] What kind of servants are we then? [Ans. Most unworthy servants.] What kind of thanks should we render to God for all his goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all men? [Ans. Humble and

hearty thanks.] Have we not cause to bless God for having created us? [Ans. Yes.] Have we not cause to bless him also for preserving us? [Ans. Yes.] Does not God bestow many blessings upon us in this life which deserve our thanks? [ns. Yes.] What should we bless God for above all things? [Ans. His inestimable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ, for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory.] Is not God's love for mankind a blessing beyond all value? [Ans. Yes.] How has God shewn his great love to mankind? [Ans. In the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ.] What are means of grace? [Ans. Ways of obtaining God's favour.] What are these means? [Ans. Prayer and the holy sacraments.] Are those unfeignedly or sincerely thankful who shew forth the praises of God with their lips only? [Ans. No.] How. else should we shew them? [Ans. In our lives? When do we do this? [Ans. When we give up ourselves to God's service.] How should God's servants live! [Ans. In holiness and righteousness all their days.] How can those who have committed sin be reckoned holy and righteous? [Ans. Through Jesus Christ.] To whom should we ascribe honour and glory for ever and ever? [Ans. To God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost.]

For Rain.

Questions.---What is this thanksgiving for? [Ans. Rain.] When is it used? [Ans. When rain is sent after a drought.] For fair Weather.

Questions---What is this thanksgiving for? [Ans. Fair weather.] When is this used? [Ans. When there has been a great deal of rain.]

For Plenty.

Questions.---What is this thanksgiving for? [Ans. Plenty.] When is this to be used? [Ans. After a time of dearth and famine.]

For Peace and Deliverance from our Enemies.

Questions.---What is this thanksgiving for? [Ans. Peace When is this to be

and Deliverance from our enemies.] used? [Ans. When a war is ended.]

For restoring Public Peace at home." Questions---What is this thanksgiving for? [Ans. For restoring public peace at home.] When is this to be used? [Ans. After tumults and disturbances in the kingdom.] For deliverance from the Plague, or other common Sickness.

Questions.---What are the two last thanksgivings for? [Ans. For deliverance from Plague or any other common sickness.] What is here meant by the Plague? [Ans. The Pestilence.] What is meant by a common sickness? [Ans. That which a great many people are afflicted with.] Do not you perceive that all these prayers and thanksgivings are proper to be used by a Christian congregation when the occasions they are designed for happen? [Ans. Yes.]

INSTRUCTIONS CONCERNING THAT PART OF THE COMMUNION SERVICE WHICH IS READ ON SUNDAYS AND HOLIDAYS.

Let the Children find the Communion Service in their Books; but there is no occasion to read the Rubrick.

Instruction.---This is part of the office for the celebration of the Lord's Supper; it is added to the Morning Service on Sundays and Holidays, that the Ten Commandments and the Epistle and Gospel for the day may be read. The remaining part of the office is only read when the Holy Sacrament of the Lord's Supper is administered.

Questions.---What does the Communion Service begin with? [Ans. The Lord's Prayer.]

Read the Collect.

Questions.---Are not all hearts open to God? [Ans. Yes.] What secrets can be hidden from God? [Ans. None.] What does our Saviour say in the beginning of his sermon on the mount, concerning the pure in heart, or those who indulge good thoughts and desires? [Ans. That they shall see God.] What does our Lord in another of his discourses say proceed out of the heart? [Ans. Evil thoughts which defile a man.] Whose hearts are filled with such thoughts?

[Ans. The wicked.] Have not the best people bad thoughts sometimes? [Ans. Yes.] Have they not sometimes fretful and discontented thoughts, angry or trifling ones? [Ans. Yes.] Should not we strive against such? [Ans. Yes.] Suppose we should have given way to them, what should we pray to God to do? [Ans. To cleanse our heart by the inspiration of his Holy Spirit.] How should we wish and strive to love God? [Ans. Perfectly.] How should we wish to magnify or honour his holy name? [Ans. Worthily.] Can we do these things without the help of the Holy Spirit? [Ans. No.] Will the Holy Spirit help us if we do not try to do the best we can to keep from bad thoughts and desires? [Ans. No.]

Read the Rubrick; after which read the Commandments, the Children making the Responses as at Church.

Questions.---Are not these Commandments the same you have learnt in the Catechism? [Ans. Yes.] Who spake them [Ans. God.] In what part of Scripture are they to be found? Ans. In the 20th chapter of Exodus.] As these commandments make a part of the Christian religion, is it not very proper that Christians should frequently hear them at church? [Ans. Yes.] As these are the very words of God, should not all to whom they are repeated listen with reverence and attenion? [Ans. Yes.] Do you recollect what was heard and seen when the commandments were given from mount Sinai? [Ans. Lightnings and thunderings, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud.] Did not the moutain tremble and appear altogether in a smoke? [Ans. Yes.] How were the people affected? [Ans. They trembled exceedingly.] What did the people say to Moses? [Ans. Speak thou with us, and we will hear, but let not God speak with us, lest we die.] Should not we be affected in the same manner, if God should shew forth his glory and speak himself to us in the same awful manner? [Ans. Yes.] Is it not better for us to hear the commandments spoken by a person like ourselves? [Ans. Yes.] Should we ever forget that they are the very words of God? [Ans. No.]

Questions.---What does the first Commandment forbid ? [ARS. Having any other Gods.] May not those people be said to have other Gods who set their hearts upon the pleasures, honours, and riches of this life? [Ans. Yes.]
