Obs. Among the neuter verbs which take the auxiliary verb etre; there are some which may become active, ' and which then take the auxiliary verb avoir and a direct regimen. In this example etes-vous descendu? are you come down? the verb is neuter. Avez vous descendu mon Ziwe/ijhavelyou taken down my book? the verb is become active; it has taken the auxiliary avoir and a direct regimen. OF REFLECTIVE AND RECIPROCALVERBS. Those are called reflective verbs whose subject and regimen are the same person or the same thing; asje me divertis, I diverted myself; tu te flattes, thou flatterest thyself; il se blesse, he wounds himself, &c. Those are called7reciprocal verbs which have several subjects which perform upon each other the thing expressed by the verb. When we say Pierre et Jean se battent, Peter and John fight each other, we cause it to be understood that Peter fights John and that John fights Peter. Let medians se trompent mutuellement, the wicked mutually deceive each other; that is to say that some wicked persons deceive other wicked persons, and are reciprocally deceived.. Reflective and reciprocal verbs are conjugated like the neuter verb tomber, to fall; that is to say, they take the auxiliary verb fare in the compound tenses.
