1 When Israel went out of Egypt, the house of Jacob, from a barbarous people.

2 Judea was made his sanctuary, Israel his dominion.

3 The sea saw and fled; Jordan was turned back.

4 The mountains skipped like rams, and the hills like the lambs of the flock.

5 What ailed thee, O thou sea, that thou didst flee? and thou, O Jordan, that thou wast turned back?

6 Ye mountains, that ye skipped like rams, and ye hills like the lambs of the flock?

7 At the presence of the Lord the earth was moved; at the presence of the God of Jacob.

8 Who turned the rocks into pools of waters, and the stony hills into fountains of waters.

9 Not to us, O Lord, not to us! but to thy name give glory.

10 For thy mercy and for thy truth's sake, lest the Gentiles should say: Where is their God?

11 But our God is in heaven; he hath done all things whatsoever he would.

12 The idols of the Gentiles are silver and gold; the work of the hands of men.

13 They have mouths, and speak not; they have eyes, and see not.

14 They have ears, and hear not; they have noses, and smell not.

15 They have hands, and feel not; they have feet, and walk not; neither shall they cry out through their throats.

16 Let them that make them become like unto them, and all such as trust in them.

17 The house of Israel hath hoped in the Lord; he is their helper and their protector. 18 The house of Aaron hath hoped in the Lord he is their helper and their protector.

19 They that fear the Lord, have hoped in the Lord; he is their helper and their protector. 20 The Lord hath been mindful of us; and hath blessed us.

21 He hath blessed the house of Israel; he hath blessed the house of Aaron.

22 He hath blessed all that fear the Lord, both little and great.

23 May the Lord add blessings upon you; upon you, and upon your children.

24 Blessed be you of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

25 The heaven of heavens is the Lords; but the earth he hath given to the children of men. 26 The dead shall not praise thee, O Lord, nor any of them that go down to hell.

27 But we that live bless the Lord, from this time, now and for ever. Glory, &c.

Anthem. We that live do bless the Lord.

Instead of the foregoing, the following is occasionally said.

Psalm cxvi. Laudate.

Praise the Lord all ye nations and praise him all ye people.

Because his mercy is confirmed upon us and the truth of the Lord remaineth for ever. Glory, &c.

The little Chapter, 2 Cor. 1.

Blessed be God, and the Father of our Lord

Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulations.

Answ. Thanks be to God.

HYMN, LUCIS CREATOR OPTIME.

1.

Maker of light! most holy king
Who dost returning day-light bring,
Thou who at first didst form the light
Ere rose the world in freshness dight,

2.

Who didst the morn and evening blend
And call it day,-great God, attend
And grant our prayers, ere night enfold
Creation as it did of old.

3.

Oh! let no slumb'ring mortal die
While sin upon his conscience lie,
While heedless of eternal years,
Vain sin allures and folly cheers.

4.

No; let him seek the gates of heaven,
And may the living prize be given:
Let him avoid all deed of blame

And here blot out whate'er might shame.

5.

Be not our prayers, kind Lord, in vain!
And thou, the Son, who e'er dost reign
With the great Spirit pure ador'd,
Hear, grant our prayer-oh grant it, Lord!

V. May my prayer, O Lord, be directed. R. As incense in thy sight.

The anthem for the Magnificat is different every Sunday.

The Magnificat, or the Canticle of the blessed Virgin, St. Luke i.

My soul doth magnify the Lord.

And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.

Because he hath regarded the humility of his handmaid; for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.

For he that is mighty hath done great things for me. And holy is his name.

And his mercy is from generation to generation, to them that fear him.

He hath showed might in his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble.

He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he hath sent empty away.

He hath received Israel his servant; being mindful of his mercy.

As he spoke to our fathers; to Abraham, and to his seed for ever. Glory, &c.

The prayer is the collect for the day; which is different every Sunday. You may say this that follows:

LET US PRAY.

Look down, we beseech thee, O Lord, upon

this thy family; for which our Lord Jesus Christ was pleased to be delivered into the hands of sinners, and to undergo the torments of the cross. Who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen.

A COMMEMORATION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY.

Anthem. O holy Mary succour the miserable, help the faint-hearted, comfort the afflicted; pray for the people, intercede for the clergy, make supplication for the devout female sex: let all be sensible of thy help, who celebrate thy holy commemoration.

V. Pray for us O holy Mother of God. R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

LET US PRAY,

Grant, we beseech thee, O Lord God, that we thy servants may enjoy perpetual health of mind and body; and by the glorious intercession of the blessed Mary, ever virgin, may be delivered from present sorrows, and come to eternal joys, through our Lord Jesus Christ.

A COMMEMORATION OF THE HOLY APOSTLES PETER AND PAUL.

Anthem. The apostle Peter, and Paul the doctor of the Gentiles, were they that taught us thy law, O Lord.

V. Thou shalt establish them rulers over the whole earth. R. They shall be mindful of thy

name, O Lord.
