The Gospel, S. John 16, 16,

JESUS faid to his difciples, A

They faid therefore, What is this that he faith, A little while? we cannot tell what he faith. Now Jefus knew that they were defirous to afk him, and faid unto them, Do ye enquire among yourfelves of that I faid, A little while and ye hall not fee me; and again, a little while and ye fhall fee me? Verily verily I fay unto you,That ye fhall weep and lament, but the world fhall rejoice and ye fhall be forrowful, but your forrow fhall be turned into joy. A woman when the is in travail hath forrow, be caufe her hour is come: but as foon as the is delivered of the child, the remembereth no more the anguifh, for joy that a man is born into the world. And ye now therefore have forrow: but I will fee you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.

Wherefore lay apart all filthinefs and fuperfluity of naugh tinefs, and receive with meek nefs the ingrafted word, which is able to fave your fouls,

Hitherto have ye afked nothing in my name: Afk, and ye fhall receive, that your joy may be full. Thefe things have Ifpoken unto you in proverbs: the time cometh when I fhall no more fpeak unto you in proverbs, but I fhall fhew you plainly of the Father. At that day ye fhail afk in my name; and I fay not unto you, That I will pray the Father for you for the Father himself loveth you, becaufe ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God. I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father. His difciples faid unto him, Lo, now fpeakeft thou plainly, and fpeakeft no proverb: Now are we fure that thou knoweft all things, and needeft not that any.

These things I have fpoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye fhall have tribulation; but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

For John truly baptized with water; but ye fhall be baptized with the Holy Ghoft not many days hence. When they there fore were come together, they afked of him, faying, Lord, wilt thou at this time reftore again the kingdom to Ifrael? And he faid unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the feafons, which the Father hath put in his own power: but ye fhall receive power, after that the Holy Ghoft is come upon you; and ye fhall be witneffes unto me, both in Jerufalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermoft part of the earth. And when he had fpoken thefe things, while they beheld, he was taken up, and a cloud received him out of their fight. And while they looked ftedfaftly toward heaven, as he went up, behold, two men flood by them in white apparel; which also faid,

Ye men of Galilee, why ftand ye gazing up into heaven? This fame Jefus which is taken up from you into heaven, fhall fo come in like manner as ye have feen him go into heaven.

And thefe figns fhall follow them that believe in my Name fhall they caft out devils; they fhall fpeak with new tongues; they hall take up ferpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it fhall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the fick, and they fhall recover. So then after the Lord had fpoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and fat on the right hand of God. And they went forth and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with figns following.

Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jefus is the Son of God? This is he that came by water and blood, even Jefus Chrift; not by water only, but by water and blood: and it is the fpirit that beareth witnefs, because the fpirit is truth. For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghoft: and thefe three are one. And there are three that bear witness in earth, the fpirit, and the water, and th☛blood: and these three agree in one. If we receive the witnefs of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son. He that believeth on the Son of God hath the wit nefs in himfelf: he that believ eth not God, hath made him a lyar, becaufe he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. And this is the record that God hath given to us eternal life and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son, hath life; and he that hath not the Son, hath not life.
