Sir Roger was a native of Sandwich, and lord chief baron of the exchequer in the reign of queen Elizabeth. It is fuppofed to have been built on the fpot where formerly was a nunnery, which was deftroyed by the French when they burnt St. Mary's church. Some part of the materials were probably applied in building thi: fchool.
