affembled the Jews in Paris, and fhewed them fuch favours as no other king ever has fince Titus led them away captive. I think it altogether likely that as a Gentile led them out of their land, (Titus the Roman) fo a Gen tile will be their head to lead them back. They may think the man who leads them into their land to be the Meffiah. The Jews have of late endeavoured to prove that the Emperor of France is a defcendant of David.

It appears from the prophecy that they will appoint themselves one leader or head to go before them out of the land where they now are. Hofea, i. 11, "Then fhall the children of Judah and the children of Ifrael be gathered together, and appoint themfelves one HEAD, and they fhall come up out of the land; for great shall be the day of Jezreel." If this text does not refer to fuch a time, I cannot tell what it means.

It is mentioned in the prophecies that have been noticed in a former part, that when they return, their chil dren will be brought in the arms and on the fhoulders of the Gentiles, on camels, dromedaries, and fwift beafts,. on litters, mules, chariots, and in fhips of Tarfhifh; bringing their fons from far, and their daughters from the ends of the earth, and that they fhall be fettled according to their old eftates, and that even the river of Egypt shall be fmitten in the feven ftreams, that the Jews may go o ver dry fhod.

O what a remarkable day will that be, (a day near hand) when the inhabitants of Europe, Afia, Africa, and America, fhall hear, that the Turks who have fo long trodden down Jerufalem and laid wafte the land, have agreed to refign the whole land to the Jews and to leave the country voluntarily! when a proclamation from the one who is at the head of the Jews fhall go forth into every place where a Jew is found, calling him to join the great company who are returning to the land of their fathers! When from different parts of the land they fhall be feen in great companies on foot, on horfes, mules, camels, dromedaries, on fwift beafts, on litters, in chariots, in the arms and on the fhoulders of the Gentiles, they shall be feen with their faces towards Zion, aking

of ftrangers the way! When from countries feparated from Canaan by great waters, the fhips of Tarshish first, and others after, fhall bring the fons of Abraham from diftant lands, and from the isles afar off as they bring an offering in a clean veffel before the Lord! Such a time as this will caufe all the believing Gentiles to rejoice with this people; because the Lord has vifited them, and because this will be one of the laft figns of the coming of the Son of man to reign on the earth a thousand years, when wars fhall cease to the ends of the earth, and all nations fhall call him blessed!

When the Jews return to their land, they will carry with them great riches, of gold and filver; according to Ifaiah lx. 9, "Surely the ifles fhall wait for me, and the ships of Tarfhifh first, to bring their fons from far, their SILVER and their GOLD with them." Having an abundance of this, those who do bufinefs in fhips will leave many places where they now trade, and go to Joppa, the feaport of Canaan, to trade with the Jews, who having juft come from diftant parts, will want many things of thofe who do business on the great waters, this will turn the trade of the feas to them; this is called a converfion of the feas to the Jews. Ifaiah lx. 5, "Because the abundance of the feas fhall be cONVERTED Unto thee, the forces of the Gentiles fhall come unto thee." What is here called the forces of the Gentiles, which fhall come to the Jews, in their land, is in chap. lxi. 6,. called the riches of the Gentiles, which they shall eat of. "Ye fhall eat the riches of the Gentiles, and in their glory fhall ye boaft yourselves."

Ifaiah fays that there will be fo much riches brought from different parts of the world to the Jews after their return, that they will be employed night and day to re'ceive it, not even having time to shut their gates at night. They will keep them open all night to give the Gentiles opportunity to come in with their riches continually. See chap. Ix. 2, "Therefore thy gates fhall be open continually, they shall not be shut day nor night, that men may bring unto thee the forces of the Gentiles, and that their kings may be brought."

It is thought by many, that when the Jews return, they will all be converted, or submit to Jefus Chrift; but aecording to the prophecy, after they return and live fome time in unwalled cities without fear of the Turks, or any other nation; being greatly increafed in riches, there will be a fudden attempt made by the Gentiles to overcome them, take their riches and their land from them, and even advance towards them with apparant fuccefs; at which time when they are in great diftrefs, Jefus Christ will appear, fubdue their foes, and dwell among them, at which time, they will fee him, and fay, "Blef fed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord."-This I fhall notice in the next fermon.

IN this difcourfe will be noticed; 1. The army which will combine together to conquer the Jews after they return to Canaan....2. The things which hall then take place among the Jews, and the combined powers.

IT is

T is plain from the prophecies, that after the Jews return and are peceably fettled, that there will be a combined power against them, which fhall endeavor to overcome them for the fake of their riches, which will be very great. This army will be commanded by GOG, who is fuppofed to be the grand Turk, at the head of the Turks, and other nations, who

[ocr errors]

Will jou them to overcome the Jews for the fake of the spoil. This is mentioned in Ezekiel xxxviii. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. "And the word of the LORD came unto me, faying, fon of man, fet thy face against Gog, the land of Magog, the chief prince of Mefhech and Tubal, and prophecy against him, and fay thus faith the LORD GOD, behold I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Mefhẹch and Tubal; and I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws, and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horfes and horfemen, all of them clothed with all forts of armour, even a great company with bucklers. and fhields, all of them handling fwords; Perfia, Ethiopia, and Libya with them; all of them with fhields & helmets: Gomer, and all his bands; the house of Togarmah of the north quarters, and all his bands; and many people

with thee. Be thou prepared, and prepare for thyself, thou, and all thy company that are affembled with thee, and be thou a guard unto them."

This combined army is made up of thofe nations, who with the Turks, believe in the religion of Mahomet. They are defcribed as horfemen, which fhews them to be the fame people which now poffefs that land. That this is a prophecy yet to be fufilled, is evident, for there never was fuch an army as this, that ever marched into Canaan, it is further evident that it is fomething not yet accomplished, from what is faid in verfe 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, "After many days thou fhall be vifited; in the lat ter years thou fhalt come into the land that is brought back from the fword, and is gathered out of many people, against the mountains of Ifrael, which have been always wafte, but it is brought forth out of the nations, and they fhall dwell fafely all of them. Thou shall af cend and come like a storm; thou fhall be like a cloud to cover the land, thou and all thy bands, and many people with thee. Thus faith the LORD GOD, it shall alfo come to pass, that at the fame time fhall things come in. to thy mind, and thou fhall think an evil thought; and thou shall say, I will go up to the land of unwalled villages; I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates; to take a fpoil, and to take a prey; to turn thine hand upon the defolate places, that are now inhabited, and upon the people that are gathered out of the nations, which have gotten cattle and goods, to take a great fpoil."

The prophecy plainly fhews that this attempt to overcome the Jews has never been, for

1. It is faid to be after many days, in the latter years, that he, (Gog) fhall come into the land that is brought back from captivity, which means the land of Canaan which is now in captivity, but will be brought back, it is faid that he fhall come against those who are brought forth out of the nations, who dwell fafely ; this means the Jews.
