THE THIRD EPISTLE OF

JOHN.

The elder Gunto, whom I to have the preeminence among

HE elder unto the well- | but Di-ŏt'-rě-phēs, who loveth

[merged small][ocr errors]

4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.

5 Beloved, thou doest faithfully whatsoever thou doest to the brethren, and to strangers; 6 Which have borne witness of thy charity before the church: whom if thou bring forward on their journey after a godly sort, thou shalt do well:

7 Because that for his name's sake they went forth, taking nothing of the Gĕn'-tiles.

them, receiveth us not.

10 Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating against us with malicious words and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them out of the church.

11 Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.

12 Dē-mē'-tri-us hath good report of all men, and of the truth itself: yea, and we also bear record; and ye know that our record is true.

13 I had many things to write, but I will not with ink and pen write unto thee:

14 But I trust I shall shortly see thee, and we shall speak face to face. Peace be to thee. Our friends salute thee. Greet 9 I wrote unto the church: | the friends by name.

8 We therefore ought to receive such, that we might be fellowhelpers to the truth.

THE GENERAL EPISTLE OF

JÚDE.

ÛDE, the servant of Je'- the common salvation, it was

James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Je'-sus Christ, and called:

2 Mercy unto you, and peace, and love, be multiplied.

3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of

you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.

4 For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men,

turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Je'-sus Christ.

they are without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots;

5 I will therefore put you in remembrance, though ye 13 Raging waves of the sea, once knew this, how that the foaming out their own shame; Lord, having saved the people wandering stars, to whom is out of the land of E'-gypt, after-reserved the blackness of darkward destroyed them that be- ness for ever. lieved not.

6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.

7 Even as Sŏd'-om and Gōmor'-rhă, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, Suffering the vengeance of etermal fire.

8 Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities.

9 Yet Mi-cha-ěl the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Mo'-ses, durst not bring gainst him a railing accusaion, but said, The Lord rebuke hee.

10 But these speak evil of hose things which they know not: but what they know naturally, as brute beasts, in those chings they corrupt themselves. 11 Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Ba'-laam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Cor-6.

12 These are spots in your easts of charity, when they east with you, feeding themselves without fear clouds

14 And E'-noch also, the seventh from Ad-ăm, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints,

15 To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.

16 These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts; and their mouth speaketh great swelling words, having men's persons in admiration because of advantage. 17 But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Je'-sus Christ;

18 How that they told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts.

19 These be they who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit.

20 But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost,

21 Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Je'-sus Christ unto eternal life.

22 And of some have compassion, making a difference: 23 And others save with fear,

him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John:

2 Who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Je'-sus Christ, and of all things that he saw.

3 Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein for the time is at hand.

OHN to the seven churches

4 JOH

7 Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which

:

of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, A'-měn.

8 I am Ål'-phǎ and Ō-měg'-ă, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.

9 I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Je'-sus Christ, was in the isle that is called Păt'-mos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jē'-sus Christ.

10 I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet, 11 Saying, I am Ål'-phǎ and

be unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are be-O-měg'-ă, the first and the last: fore his throne;

5 And from Je'-sus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,

6 And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. A'-měn.

and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Ã'-siă; unto Eph'-ě-sus, and unto Smyr'-nă, and unto Pĕrgă-mos, and unto Thy-a-tī-ră, and unto Sär'-dis, and unto Phil-ǎ-děl'-phi-ă, and unto LaŎd-I-çe'-ă.

12 And I turned to see the voice that spake with me. And being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks;

His message to the REVELATION, 2. angels of the churches.

13 And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle.

14 His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire;

15 And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters.

16 And he had in his right hand seven stars and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.

17 And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last :

18 I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, A'-men; and have the keys of hell and of death.

19 Write the things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and the things which shall be hereafter;

20 The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches.

CHAPTER 2.

NTQ the angel of the church of

things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks;

2 I know thy works, and thy

labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars:

3 And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name's sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted.

4 Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.

5 Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.

6 But this thou hast, that thou hatest the deeds of the Nic-ōla-I'-tānes, which I also hate.

7 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.

8 And unto the angel of the church in Smyr-nă write; These things saith the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive;

9 I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Sa'-tăn.

10 Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have

faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.

11 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that

What John was

REVELATION, 3. commanded to write

overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.

12 And to the angel of the church in Per'-gă-mos write; These things saith he which hath the sharp sword with two edges;

13 I know thy works, and where thou dwellest, even where Sa'-tan's seat is: and thou holdest fast my name, and hast not denied my faith, even in those days wherein An'-ti-pas was my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Sa-tăn dwelleth.

14 But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Ba'-laam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Is-ra-ěl, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication. 15 So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nic-ōla-i'-tānes, which thing I hate.

16 Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.

17 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden măn'-nă, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.

18 And unto the angel of the church in Thy-a-ti'-ră write; These things saith the Son of God, who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire, and his feet are like fine brass;

19 I know thy works, and

charity, and service, and faith, and thy patience, and thy works; and the last to be more than the first.

20 Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jěz ĕ-běl, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to se duce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols.

21 And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not.

22 Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds.

23 And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works. 24 But unto you I say, and unto the rest in Thy-a-tī-ră, as many as have not this doctrine, and which have not known the depths of Sa-tăn, as they speak; I will put upon you none other burden.

25 But that which ye have already hold fast till I come. 26 And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations:

27 And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father.

28 And I will give him the morning star.

29 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.
