HYMN 8. L. M.

LORD of the Sabbath, hear us pray
In this thy house, on this thy day:
Accept, as grateful sacrifice,

The songs which from thy temple rise.
Now met to pray, and bless thy name,
Whose mercies flow each day the same,
Whose kind compassions never cease,
We seek instruction, pardon, peace.
Thine earthly Sabbaths, Lord, we love;
But there's a nobler rest above;
Oh, that we might that rest attain
From sin, from sorrow, and from pain.
In thy blest kingdom we shall be
From every mortal trouble free:
No sighs shall mingle with our songs
Resounding from immortal tongues.

HYMN 9. C. M.

As o'er the past my mem'ry strays,
Why heaves the secret sigh?
"Tis that I mourn departed days,
Still unprepar'd to die.

The world, and worldly things beloved,
My anxious thoughts employed;
And time unhallowed, unimproved,
Presents a fearful void.

Yet, holy Saviour, wild despair

Chase from my lab'ring breast;

Thy grace it is, which prompts the prayer, That grace can do the rest.

My life's brief remnant all be thine!
And when thy sure decree
Bids me this fleeting breath resign,
Oh, speed my soul to thee.

[blocks in formation]

ALMIGHTY Maker of my frame,

Teach me the measure of my days;
Teach me to know how frail I am,
To spend the remnant to thy praise.
My days are shorter than a span,
A little point my life appears;
How frail at best is dying man!

How vain are all his hopes and fears!
Vain his ambition, noise and show;

Vain are the cares which rack his mind; He heaps up treasures mixed with woe; He dies, and leaves them all behind! O, be a nobler portion mine ;

My God, I bow before thy throne; Earth's fleeting treasures I resign, And fix my hopes on thee alone.

HYMN 11. L. M.

DARKNESS Overspreads us here,
But the night wears fast away;
Jacob's star will soon appear,
Leading on eternal day.

Now 'tis time to rouse from sleep,
Trim our lamps, and be prepared,
For our Lord strict watch to keep,
Lest he find us off our guard.

Let the faithful courage take,
Bearing with a patient mind
All they suffer for his sake;

Rich rewards in Christ they'll find.
He will wipe away their tears,
Near himself appoint their lot!
Then will sorrows, pains, and fears,
With their Saviour, be forgot.

HYMN 12. L. M.

JESUS, and shall it ever be,

A mortal man ashamed of thee?
Ashamed of thee, whom angels praise,
Whose glories shine thro' endless days!
Ashamed of Jesus, that dear friend,
On whom my hopes of heav'n depend !
No! may it never be my shame
That I no more revere his name!
Ashamed of Jesus!-yes, I may,
When I've no guilt to wash away;
No tear to dry, no good to crave,
No fears to quell, no soul to save.
Till then,-nor is such boasting vain,
Till then, I boast a Saviour slain;
And oh! may this my glory be,-
That Christ is not ashamed of me.

HYMN 13. L. M.

THE God of glory walks his round,
From day to day, from year to year,
And warns us each with awful sound,
"No longer stand ye idle here."

Ye, whose young cheeks are fresh and bright, Whose hands are strong, whose hearts are clear,

Waste not of hope the morning light,
Alas! why stand ye idle here!

And ye, whose locks by time made gray,
Foretel your latest travail near,
How swiftly fades your closing day !—
And stand ye yet so idle here!
O thou, by all thy works adored,
To whom the sinner's soul is dear,
Recall us to thy vineyard, Lord,
And spare us still another year.

HYMN 14. L. M.

O GOD of wisdom, God of might,
Great Ruler in the realms of light;
Help thy unknowing servants, Lord,
To know and understand thy word.
Reveal thy Scriptures to our mind;
There let us heavenly treasures find;
Do thou those sacred leaves unfold;
Let us thy richest grace behold!
Direct us, lest we judge amiss;
Lest error cloud the paths of bliss:
Th' ingrafted word may we receive,
And back to thee the glory give!

HYMN 15. L. M.

PLANT, and root, and 'fix in me
All the mind that was in thee;
Settled peace I then shall find,—
Jesu's is a quiet mind.

I shall suffer and fulfil

All my Father's gracious will;
Be alike in all resigned,-

Jesu's is a patient mind.

I shall triumph evermore,
Gratefully my God adore,

God, so true, so good, so kind,—
Jesu's is a thankful mind.

O, that I were quite restor❜d
To the image of my Lord;
Witnessing to all mankind,
Jesu's is a perfect mind.

HYMN 16. C. M.

O FOR a closer walk with God,
A calm and heavenly frame :
A light to shine upon the road
That leads me to the Lamb!

Where is the blessedness I knew
When first I saw the Lord ?
Where is the soul-refreshing view
Of Jesus and his word?

Return, O Holy Dove, return,

Sweet messenger of rest;

I hate the sins that made thee mourn,

And drove thee from my breast.

The dearest idol I have known,
Whate'er that idol be,

Help me to tear it from thy throne,
And worship only thee.
