But if it be thy blessed will
In poverty we pine,

Make us content, remembering still
A poorer lot was thine.

Thro' the world's changing, fickle scene,
From sin preserve us free;
Like us, thou hast a mourner been,
May we rejoice with thee..

HYMN 296. L. M.

Is he a star?-he breaks the night,
Piercing the shades with dawning light :
I know his glories from afar,

I know the bright and morning Star!
Is he a sun? his beams are grace,
His course is joy and righteousness:
Nations rejoice, when he appears

To chase their clouds, and dry their tears.
Nor earth, nor seas, nor sun, nor stars,
The Saviour's full resemblance bears,
His beauties we can never trace
Till we behold him face to face.
O, let me climb those higher skies,
Where storms and darkness never rise;
There he displays his powers abroad,
And shines, and reigns Incarnate God.

HYMN 297. L. M.

AND live I yet by pow'r divine,
And have I still my course to run;
Again brought back in its decline
The shadow of my parting sun?

The Lord to my deliv'rance flew,
Where sunk in mortal pangs I lay;
Pale Death his ancient Conqu'ror knew,
And trembled, and ungrasp'd his prey.
God of my life, what just return
Can sinful dust and ashes give?
I only live my sin to mourn;
To love my God I only live.

HYMN 298. L. M.

SHEW pity, Lord,-O Lord, forgive,
Let a repenting sinner live:

Are not thy mercies large and free?
May not a sinner trust in Thee.

My crimes are great,—but don't surpass
The glorious riches of thy grace;
Great God, thy nature hath no bound,
Then let thy pardoning love be found.
O wash my soul from ev'ry sin,
And make my guilty conscience clean;
Here on my heart the burden lies,
And past offences meet my eyes.

Yet save a trembling sinner, Lord

Whose hope, still hov'ring round thy word, Would light on some sweet promise there, Some sure support against despair.

HYMN 299. L. M.

WHEN from our Father's house astray
From Eden's bliss we chose to roam,
We heard a voice from Eden say.
"Return, ye wanderers, to your home."

"Slumb'rers, awake," the Saviour said, "Break from the visions of the night, Seek not for life among the dead,

Arise, and Christ will give you light. ""Tis mine the bursting heart to heal, The bruised spirit to restore, Light on the sightless eye to deal, And preach the gospel to the poor." This voice, more soft than Eden's gales, Bids us to Eden's bow'rs repair; This voice, when sinking nature fails, Shall cheer us on,-and fix us there.

HYMN 300. P. M.

COME, thou long-expected Jesus,
Come and set thy people free,
From our sins and fears release us,
Let us find our rest in thee !
Israel's strength and consolation,
Hope of all the earth thou art;
Great Desire of ev'ry nation,
Joy of ev'ry sinking heart. Hal.

Born thy people to deliver,

Born in weakness, yet a King! Born to reign in us for ever,

Hal.

Now thy gracious kingdom bring. Hal.

By thine own eternal Spirit,

Rule in all our hearts alone:

By thine all-sufficient merit

Raise us to thy glorious throne. Hal.

HYMN 301. L. M.
SPEEDING along the world's high-way
By crowds of eager travellers trod,
My soul, my soul, a moment stay,
To hold communion with thy God.
He spake with Abraham at the oak,
He called Elisha from the plough,
David he from the sheep-folds took,--
Thy day, thine hour of grace, is now!
Earth, with thy vanities, depart!

My God, I stand alone with thee;
Thine eye is looking on my heart—
Oh, what an awful look for me !
Lord, lay thine hand upon my head,

One touch from thee will make me whole; Speak, with the voice that wakes the dead, Peace, pardon, comfort to my soul.

HYMN 302. P. M.

Lo! he comes, with clouds descending,
Once for guilty sinners slain;
Tens of thousand hosts attending

Swell the triumph of his train. Hal.
Hark! the solemn trump has sounded!
Heaven and earth shall pass away!
Ye, who left the Lord!-confounded
Must behold that dreadful day! Hal.
Now salvation, long expected,

Shall in light and truth appear,
And his saints, no more dejected,
Rise to meet him in the air! Hal.

Prince of life! we will adore thee,
High on thine eternal throne:
Saviour, take the power and glory;
Claim the kingdom for thine own.

HYMN 303. L. M.

O LORD, what a sinner am I !
My hope is in mercy alone;
Forgive me, forgive me, I cry,

Hal.

Still count me thro' grace as thine own. For thou art the God I adore,

My faithful, unchangeable Friend, Whose love is as great as thy power, And neither knows measure nor end. 'Tis Jesus, the first and the last,

Whose Spirit shall guide me safe home; I'll thank him for all that is past, And trust him for all that's to come.

HYMN 304. L. M.

FORTH in thy name, O Lord, I go,
My cheerful duty to pursue ;
Thee, only thee, resolv'd to know,
In all I think, or speak, or do.
The work thy wisdom has assigned,
Lord, let me cheerfully fulfil;
In all my works thy presence find,
And prove thine acceptable will.
Give me to bear thy easy yoke,

And every moment watch and pray ;
And still to things eternal look,
And hasten to the glorious day:
