I'd fly from all labour and toil

To the place, where the weary have rest; I'd haste from contention and broil To the peaceful abode of the blest. How holy, how happy are they, No tongue can express their delight! My soul, now unwilling to stay, Prepares for her heavenly flight. But no-my desire is not good, Impatience, not faith, is its source: While he, who redeem'd me with blood, Still says to me," Carry the cross.'

HYMN 173. c. M.

[ocr errors]

COME, let us join our cheerful songs,
With angels round the throne;
Ten thousand thousand are their tongues,
But all their joys are one.

"Worthy the Lamb that died," they cry, "To be exalted thus"!

"Worthy the Lamb" ! our hearts reply, "For he was slain for us."

Lord, thou art worthy to receive
All praise, and power divine:
Our blessings, all that we can give,
For evermore be thine.

HYMN 174

O, THROW away thy rod,

S. M.

O, throw away thy wrath;

My gracious Father, and my God,
O, take the gentle path.

Thou see'st my heart's desire
Still unto thee is bent;

Still does my longing soul aspire
To an entire consent.

Altho' I fall, I weep;
Altho' I halt in pace,
Yet still with trembling step I creep
Unto thy throne of grace.

O throw away thy rod,

What tho' man frailties hath,
Thou art my Saviour, and my God,-
O throw away thy wrath.

HYMN 175 L. M.

HEAR what God, the Lord, hath spoken,"O my people, faint and few, Comfortless, afflicted, broken,

Fair abodes I build for you.

Thorns of heart-felt tribulation

Shall no more perplex your ways;
You shall name your walls Salvation,
And your gates shall all be Praise !

There, like streams that feed the garden,
Pleasures without end shall flow;
For the Lord, your love rewarding,
All his bounty shall bestow.

God shall rise, and shining o'er you,
Change to day the g loom of night:
Christ, the Lord, shall be your glory,
God, your everlasting light.

HYMN 176. S. M.

FRIEND after friend departs !
Who hath not lost a friend?
There is no union here of hearts,
Which finds not soon an end.
Beyond the flight of time,
Beyond the reign of death,
There surely is some blessed clime,
Where life is not a breath!-

Yes, there's a world above,
Where parting is unknown,
A long eternity of love,
Formed for the good alone.

HYMN 177. L. M.

'Tis mercy, wisdom, love divine,

That mingles blessings with our cares !
Let not our thankless hearts repine,
That we obtain not all our prayers.
From weak distrust our sorrows flow;-

Short-sighted mortals, frail and blind,
Bend down their hopes to things below,-
And doubt that Providence is kind.
Were once our vain desires subdued,
The will resigned, the heart at rest;
In ev'ry scene we should conclude
The will of Heav'n is right and best.

HYMN 178. P. M.

INSPIRER, and hearer of prayer,

Thou Shepherd and Guardian of thine, My all to thy covenant care

I sleeping and waking resign.

If thou art my shield, and my sun,
The night is no darkness to me,
And, fast as the moments roll on,
They bring me but nearer to thee.
Thy minist'ring spirits descend

To watch while thy saints are asleep;
By day and by night they attend,
The heirs of salvation to keep.
I too, at the season ordained,

Their circle for ever shall join,
And love and adore without end
Their faithful Creator and mine.

HYMN 179. L. M.

HEAVEN is a place of rest from sin;
But all, who hope to enter there,
Must here that holy course begin,
Which shall their souls for heav'n prepare.

Clean hearts, O God, in us create,
Right spirits, Lord, in us renew;
Commence we now that higher state,
To do thy will as angels do.

The church of Christ, the means of grace,
The Spirit teaching thro' the word,-
In those, our Saviour's love we trace,
By this, his living voice is heard.

Firm in his footsteps may we tread,
Learn every lesson of his love;

And be from grace to glory led,

From heav'n below, to heav'n above.

HYMN 180. C. M.

ACCORDING to thy gracious word,
In meek humility,

This will I do, my dying Lord,
I will remember thee.

When to the cross I turn mine eyes,
And rest on Calvary,

O Lamb of God, my sacrifice!
I must remember thee.

Remember thee, and all thy pains,
And all thy love to me!

Yes, while a pulse or breath remains
I will remember thee.

And when these failing lips grow dumb,
And thought and memory flee,
When thou shalt in thy kingdom come,
O Lord, remember me.

HYMN 181. C. M.

THERE is a voice of sov'reign grace
Sounds from the sacred word,-
"Hither, desponding sinners, come,
And trust upon the Lord"!

O may we hear this gracious call,
And come to such relief;
We would believe thy promise, Lord,
Lord, help our unbelief.

To the pure fountain of thy blood

Teach us, at once to fly;

There may we wash our contrite souls From sins of deepest die!
