13. What was the Spirit of truth to do? 14. How was the Spirit to glorify Christ?

15. What does Christ say of his relation to the Father?

What did this relation enable him to say ?

16. Of what did he forewarn them?

To what events did he refer?

To what does he apply the expression, " because I go to the Father"?

What are we taught in these verses of the relations of the Spirit to the Godhead?

What general instruction may we derive from this account of the character and offices of the Holy Spirit?

13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak and he will show you things to come.

14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall show it unto you.

15 All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall show it unto you.

16 A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, aid ye shall see me, because I go to the Father.

LESSON XXXIX.

Conclusion of Christ's Discourse with his Disciples. John xvi. 17-33.

17. WHAT did some of Christ's disciples say?

Did they make known their perplexity to Christ?

18. What seems to have been the most per plexing part of what he had said?

19. What did Christ know?

What diyine attribute does this imply?

20. What did he say to them?

Why would the world rejoice?

How would their sorrow be turned into joy?

21, 22. How did Christ explain his meaning to them?

What is the chief source of the Christian's joy?

17 Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Becanse I go to the Father! 18 They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith.

19 Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said unto them, Do ye inquire among yourselves of that I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall

see me?

20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.

21 A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.

22 And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.

23. What does Christ promise his disciples? To what day does he refer as "that day"? How is this language of Christ to be reconciled with chap. xiv. verse 13, and chap. xv. verse 151

24. What direction does Christ give the disciples?

Why had they asked nothing before, in Christ's name?

25. In what form had he spoken to them? What is the meaning of " proverbs" in this connec

tion?

How was he to speak at some future time?

[ocr errors]

26. What were they to do "at that day" of which he had spoken?

27. Why would he not pray the Father for them?

Does this mean that they would not need Christ's intercession?

Whom does the Father love, and why?

28. What did Christ declare respecting himself?

Does this denote any inferiority of the nature of Christ?

23 And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.

24 Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.

25 These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall show you plainly of the Father.

26 At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you:

27 For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God.

28 I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.

29. How did his disciples receive this? What is the meaning of the word "proverb" here? 30. Of what did he assure them?

Why should this declaration of Christ's have been so received?

31. What did Christ inquire of them? What kind of faith is here intended?

32. Of what did he forewarn them? To what hour did he refer?

33. Why had he spoken such things to them?

How is "peace in Christ" obtained?

What did he admonish them would be their worldly condition?

Why should the disciples of Christ be "of good cheer"?

How does a guilty sinner obtain an interest in Christ's victory over the world?

29 is disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb.

30 Now are we sure that thon knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God.

31 Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe i

82 Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.

33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation; but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

LESSON XL.

Christ's Prayer for his Followers.

John xvii. 1-26.

1. WHEN Christ had spoken these words what did he do?

To what did he refer as "the hour"?

What are we here taught of the mutual relation of Christ and the Father?

2. What is Christ's prerogative?

3. What is "life eternal"?

4. What does Christ say of his ministry on earth?

5. What did he ask of the Father?

What is here implied of the divine nature of Christ?

6. What did Christ say of his true disciples? What are we to understand by their being "given to Christ"?

CHAP. XVII.-1 These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:

2 As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.

3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, who thou hast sent.

4 I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.

5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.

6 I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.
