49. But others faid; Nay, let him alone; tarry, and fee whether Elias will come to help him. 50. Prefently after, Jefus cried out again with a loud Voice, faying; All that God has appointed and the Prophets foretold I fhould Suffer, is now finished; and recommending his Soul into the Hands of God, he died.

51. And immediately the Vail which parted the Holy of Holies from the Sanctuary, was rent in pieces; fignifying the diffolution of the Jewish Oeconomy or Difpenfation, and the opening to all * Heb. Believers an enterance in10.19,20. to the Holieft, that is, into Heaven, by the Blood of Fefus. The Earth alfo trembled, and the Rocks were cleaved; fignifying that fome great alterations were Working by the mighty and immediate Power of God.

52 & 53. The Sepul chres alfo of the Dead were opened, and many Bodies of Holy Men arofe, and appeared after Chrift's Resurrection to many that dwelt in Jerufalem; Signifying that Chrift by his Death and Refurrection, had deftroyed him that had the Power of Death, Death, and given earneft of a General Refurrection from the Dead,

54. Moreover the Roman Captain himfelf, with his Soldiers that were set to Watch Jefus, aftonifhed at the greatness of these. Prodigies, faid; Certainly this was at least an Innocent Perfon, if not more than a Man.

57 58. Now when Night drew on, one fofeph of Arimathea, a Rich Man, who fecretly believed on Jesus and Embraced his Doctrin, defiring to preferve the Body of Jefus from the publick ignominy of being caft out among the Executed Malefactors, went to Pilate and begged leave that he might take away the Body and bury it; and Pilate gave him leave.

59 60. Then Jofeph took down the Body, and having wound it in a clean Linnen Cloth, he laid it in a new Sepulchre, which was a Cave in a Rock, wherein he himself defigned to lie; and ftopping it up with a great ftone, he departed.

61. All this was obferv'd by Mary Magdalene and the other Mary, who fat over

against the Sepulchre, viewing the Place where Jofeph laid the Body of Jefus, that when the Sabbath was over, they might come and Embalm it. 62 & 63. The next day, being the Sabbath in the Paffover week, fome of the Chief Priefts and Pharifees came in a Body to Pilate, and faid; Sir, we Remember that this Impoftor, when he was alive, faid he would rife again from the Dead the third Day;

64. Be pleafed therefore, that all further deceit may be prevented, to appoint a Company of Soldiers to Watch the Sepulchre till the three days be paft; left, if his Difciples fhould fteal him away in the Night, and then report it about, that he is Rifen from the Dead, the People fhould be more dangeroufly feduced than ever.

65. Pilate, Laughing within himself, at their Vain fear (as he thought,)
