Once there was a little kitty, White as the snow;

In the barn she used to frolic, Long time ago.

In the barn a little mousie

Ran to and fro;

For she heard the kitty coming,

Long time ago.

Two black eyes had little kitty,

Black as a crow;

And they spied the little mousie, Long time ago.

Four soft paws had little kitty,

Paws soft as dough;

And they caught the little mousie,

Long time ago.

Nine pearl teeth had little kitty,

All in a row;

And they bit the little mousie,
Long time ago.

When the teeth bit little mousie,
Mousie cried, "Oh!"

But she got away from kitty,

Long time ago!

THE CHICKADEE.

Chick-a-dee! Chick-a-dee-dee-dee!"

Sweet and clear is the happy little song.
It is brave little chickadee singing.
You can tell him by his little black cap.
He likes winter-time and the snow.

He sings in sunny weather and he sings when the weather is not pleasant.

We all like his brave, happy song.

Chickadee is having a hard time to-day.

Seeds are hard to find in the snow.
Poor, hungry, little bird!

Here are some crumbs for you, chickadee.
You are hungry. Eat the crumbs.
There he goes, singing "chick-a-dee-dee!"
"Thank you!" he says: "Th-a-n-k y-o-u!"
