The E. India little mare, already mentioned, was, this day, prefented to the Prince of Wales, at the Queen's palace. It is of a dun A colour, the hair refembles a fawn, its eye quick, and its teeth remarkably white.

The prizes of a gold and filver medal, annually given by Lord Bruce to the scholars of Winchefter fchool, for elocution and compofition, were feverally adjudged to Mr King Alon and Mr Day.

A porter having carried a parcel from the B Bell-Savage, to a linen-draper's in Newgatefreet, put down the parcel on the compter.. The mafter of the fhop refused to pay the porterage demanded, and the porter took the parcel up again, in order to take it back,. when the linen draper charged him with a robbery, and carried him before the fitting magiftrate accordingly. Sir Robert Ladbroke, C on bearing the merits of the caufe, dimiffed the porter, ordered fatisfaction to be made him, and gave it as his opinion, that a parcel is not properly delivered till the porterage is paid. 2. A parcel thus delivered. and while the porterage is difputing, is fnatched away by a real thief, and loft, on whom would' the damage fall?

The affizes ended at Wells, for Somersetshire, D when Jobn Cheffey and Philip Cox, for horseftealing; Wm Porter for house-breaking; and John Orchard for killing a sheep, with intent to steal the carcals, were capitally convicted.

At Coventry affizes Benjamin Porvell, for horfe- Aealing, was capitally convicted.

At Warwick affizes George Carter, for rob. bing his master of 100l. in money, received E

fentence of death.

FRIDAY 16.

Being the birth-day of his R. H. Frederick, Bp of Ofnaburg, their majesty's received the ufual complements on that occafion.

St James's, Aug. 17. Lond. Gazette. An expreis, which left Gov. Pallifer in St Lawrence Harbour, Newfoundland, on the 16th F of July, brings advice, that, on the 11th of June, getting in with the coast of Newfoundland, between St John's and Cape Race, he found two French fhips of war there; they were to the windward of him, fo that he could not get up to peak with them. The next

day he faw them off Cape Pierre, and gave chace to them, but loft them in the night. G He immediately difpatched an officer to look into St Pierre, and another along the coaft, for getting informations of the state of things, there. The first brought him accounts of two French hips of war, named the Thetis and Outard, being at St Pierre; and the other a great many informations of the French fishing where they were excluded from it by treaties. That he had feized four of the French boats, and made fome prifoners of the French acting in contravention to the treaties, He firft intended to fend the men to England, for a clearer confirmation of the matters abovementioned; but the facts, for which they

were arrefted, being admitted by the Frenc governor, and their fhips having retired agreeable to a remonstrance of Mr Pallifer's, on that fubject, he made that a reason for releafing the men.

Every thing was quiet when the express came away; and 'tis hoped the proper conduct of the governor will preferve peace and good order there. Thus far Gazette.

The reciprocal memorials and explanations, which of late have patied between our court, and that of Verfailes, are now looked upon by many, as a kind of prelude to hoftiliprinces, it fignifies little to talk of hearty ties; forafmuch as in the language of inclinations and fincere difpofitions to preferve the publick tranquility, if at the fame time they continue their complaints against each other, and refufe on either fide to give that fatisfaction which they feem mutually to require.

MONDAY 19.

Was held at the Angel inn at Oxford, the High-Borlafe, when Lady Harriot Somerfet was chofen Lady Patroneft for the year en fuing.

WEDNESDAY 21.

A moft dreadful fire broke out about one in the afternoon, at Honiton in Devonshire, and ́s burnt till eight at night, in which time it confumed upwards of 140 houses, and a wellbuilt stone chapel, in which many of the fufferers had put their goods for fafety; the meeting houfe is alfo confumed, and the clerk of the meeting burnt to dea h.

About four in the morning her majefly was happily delivered of a prince. At noon the Torver guns were fired, and at night illuminations, on that joyful event.

THURSDAY 22.

The collection at the annual meeting of the fons of the clergy, at Britol, held this day, amounted to 18 i. 171, 6d.

SATURDAY 24.

A large quantity of gold and filver watches, with a time-piece, and fome other curious things of value, were found in the gully hole at Holbourn-bridge, by the workmen, in cleaning it. These things had been taken fome days before, from the house of Mr May,

watch-maker, in Bridgewater-fquare; and were returned on the payment of io guineas, promised by advertisement for the recovery of them.

This day the importation of foreign grain into the port of London ceased, where 36,630 quarters of wheat, 2,330 wheat-meal, 1170 cats, have been entered inwards, from the 10th of May to the 24th of Auguft.

The defperate villains under fentence of tranfportation in Winchester goal, and three capital felons, for a rape, not yet tried, formed a design of breaking out, but were luckily prevented by the vigilance and refolution of the keeper.

SUNDAY 25.

A fire broke out oppofite the Ship tavern, Ratcliff-Crofs, which confumed between 20 and 30 fmall wooden houses, and did confiderable damage to about 10 others. The damage is computed at 19,000/

Berry, who fome time ago was tried at King fon affizes, for a rape on his grandmother, bathing in the Thames near the bottom of Richmond Hill, got entangled in the weeds which grew in the river, and was drowned. MONDAY 26.

'At four o'clock, his majesty's yatchts the Mary, Augufta, and Fubbs, attended with three floops of war, were feen fafe over the fats in Margate road, failing with a fair wind for the coaft of Holland, to bring over their Royal Highneffes the Duke of York, and the Prince and Princefs of Brunswick.

TUESDAY 27.

By the laft letters from Col. Defmaretz, his majefty's commiffary at Dunkirk, we are affured, that orders were given by the French miniftry for immediately fetting about the demolition of the Jettees, which are the support the harbour of Dunkirk.-Lend. Gaz.

WEDNESDAY 28.

In the dead of the night a fire broke out in Theobald's court, occafioned, as its faid, by making fome chymical experiments, which confumed feveral houfes backwards, and damaged the boules of Mr Townbend, the New-Exchange coffee house, Mers Lowrence and Keete, fationers, and entirely defiroyed the house, warehoufes, granaries, and ftuck in trade of Mefirs Wilson and Saunders, to the amount of near 30col,

In digging the foundation of fome houses in Cammomile-ftreet, a coffin plate was discovered among fome human bones, the date of which was 1026,

prefence of the principal officers of that port. The ribband weavers fpare no cost to abolish this clandeftine trade.

A young lady of immenfe fortune has lately eloped with her father's French Valet. They have taken the rout of Scotland, and it is hoped, the lady is the fame, who having difcovered fome indifcretions in her feducer, very prudently refolved to put an end to the connection, and accordingly found means to fecret herself till her friends fhould come to her delivery.

A legacy of 350%. has lately been bequeathed to the Society for promoting Chriftian knowledge, by Robert North, late of Scarbo rough, Efq; who has left feveral other legacies for truly pious purposes.

The foldiery in the Isle of Man seem perfectly fatisfied with their quarters in that ifland, provifions are cheap, and money fcarce; fo that a foldier's pay is there equal to his wants. The revenues of that ifland produced in 1763, 9204/. fterling clear of all deductions.

A commiffion is making out for the redemption of the British fubjects now in flaEvery in the feveral pyratical states of Barbary,、 faid to be more than few in number.

The Right Hon. the Lord Mayor, aldermen, recorder, common-councilmen, &c. went in proceffion fromGuildball to St James's, and prefented an humble addrefs to his Majefly, on the fafe delivery of the Queen, G and the birth of a prince. In this addrefs they affure his majefty, that whenever a bap ps eftablishment of public measures shall gr fent a Fivourable occafion, they will be ready to exert "their utmost abilities in support of fuch wife councils as apparently tend to render his majesty's sign bappy and glorious.

SATURDAY 31.

His Imperial Majefty Francis 1. Emperor of Germany, died at Infpruck on Sunday the 18th inft. He was in good health the greater part of the day, and affifted at divine rvice; but between nine and ten in the ening, he was attacked by a fit of apoplexy,

Several pyracies have been committed lately in the channel upon our own fhips, by pyrates that appear to be chiefly Englife.

A remittance from Eaft India of money and jewels to the amount of 200 000!. has lately been received by fome of the India fhips lately arrived the property of a gentieman just come over.

Orders are fent to the Tower to get ready a number of gun-carriages, a quantity of artilly, and feveral mortars, to be shipped on board two tranfports in the river, with other governmenment flores, for Placentia, in Newfoundland.

An edict has lately been iffued at Paris, empowering the Eaft India company to dif the amount of pofe of life annuities to 477,000 livres, at 9 per cent upon all lives indifcriminately; and alfo to create a lottery at 300 livres each.

The gentlemen appointed by the board of longitude to examine Mr Harrison's timekeeper, have met feveral times within the course of the month, at Mr Harrison's house, for that purpose, and have at length declared themfelves fully fatisfied with the utility of the machine, and the rectitude of its principles; in confequence whereof, they have given him a certificate of their entire approbation
