Kirby, and repeated the frabbs on various parts of the Ela, by cutting him crois the face, and W bodies of both. He afterwards took a large King, an accomplice in the fame fact; Andofe of opium himself, and died the next day thony Vacheron, for forging a note of his grace about four in the afternoon. A the Duke of Mariborough for 20,000!. Tho. SUNDAY 7. Carr for fraudulently endeavouring to obtain failors wages; and Ann Smith for privately ftealing a watch. At this feffions Samuel Prief, for the riot on Ludgate bill, (See p. 244.) was found guilty, fined one filling, fix months imprifonment in Newgate, and to find fureties for his good behaviour one year.

Two Chelsea penfoners were committed to prifon, charged upon oath with the murder of the late Mr Knight, (See p. 196.) upon the Fulbam road. The difcovery was made by an accomplice, whom they threatened to murder, on fome late quarrel.

TUESDAY 9.

His Pruffian majelty has demanded the B arrears of the fubfidiary treaty, whith was with held on the admiffion of a lare minifter to the adminstration of the affairs of this nation. This peremtory demand has occafioned much embarraïment.

At the admiralty feflions, held at the Old Bailey, Captain Lorado, late Matter of the Principe de Espagna, was indicted for wilfully cafting away the faid fhip, with intent to defraud the infurere, &c. but it appearing to the jury, that the ship was not actually caft away, but was faved and brought into Falmouth harbour, notwithstanding the most villainous attempt to wreck her on a reif of rocks near that harbour, he was acquitted; and it being the particular prerogative of that court either to condemn capitally or wholly to acquit, he was immediately discharged; a new charge, however, was immediately preferred against him for a misdemeaner; but he found means to escape, and it is fince given out that he died aboard a fhip in the river Thames.

WEDNESDAY 10.

A caufe was tried before Lord Man field, in which Metfrs Carr, Ibbetson, and Co. were plaintiffs, and feveral custom-houfe officers defendants, for entering the houfe of the faid plaintiffs, under pretence of fearching for prohibited filks; when it appearing to a fpecial jury that there was not the leaft colour for fuch fearch, a verdict was given for the plaintiffs, with 100l. damages, and cofts of fuit.

*Carrol belonged to a desperate gang of vi!lains, who acted in concert, and were to cut out the eyes of those they robaed, that they might not be able to appear against them. A farther account of whofe villainy, with Vacheron's forgery, fhall be given hereafter. TUESDAY 16,

The Duke of York arrived at CharlotterCbourg, where he was joined by the King and Queen of Praffic, the princes and princeff of the blood, the house of Brunfavick, the D. of Brunfwick Bevern, the reigning prince of Anbalt Defau, the nobility and foreign minifters. The nex' day prince Frederick Wil liam of Pruffia, and the princess Elizabeth Chriftina Ulrich, of Brunswick, received the nuptial benediction at the castle, about eight o'clock in the evening. After the ceremony which was performed with great pomo, the company fupped at four tables, each of 200 covers; at one of which were the king, their Royal Highneffes, and the foreign princes at the fecond, the minifters of ftate, and thofe of foreign powers; at the third, perfons belonging to the court; and the fourth, the generals and officers of the ftate-major. At eleven o'clock the prince and the new princefs of Pruffia, opened the ball, in which the king, the duke of York, the princes and princeffes danced. The ball which continued till late at night, was performed by torch light to the found of two choruffes of trumpets and kettle drums. Yefterday the new married pair received compliments on the occafion.

A great countil was held at St James, F when a general alteration in the miniftry took place; the motives for which are varionfly reported. See p. 333.

A grand match was run on Newmarket courfe, between Lord Bolingbroke's Gimcrack, and Sir James Lowther's Afcbam, which was won by the former. The betts on this match are faid to amount to more than 100,000/.

In confequence of a very polite meffage from Mr Secretary Conway, to the Canada merchants, the committee waited upon that gentleman, and laid the ftate of their cafe refpecting the Canada bills before him. Being fully convinced of the juftice of their claim. he affared them in the Arongest manner, that Gthat the affair fhould be taken up immediately, and profecuted with effect, till justice fhould be obtained.

At the Society of Arts a letter was read from the Mayor of Liverpoole importing, that the corporation over which he had the honour to prefide had ordered one hundred

pounds to be paid towards affifting in the

general views of the fociety; for which the
Secretary was defired to return thanks.
THURSDAY is.
A board of longitude was held

miralty, when the marine table for finding
the longitude at fea, by the lunar method, in-
vented by Mr Witchell, was taken into con-
fideration and approved, and a thousand
pounds order to be advanced to enable the
inventor to carry it into execution. By this A
order, it should feem that the commiffioners
do not think the longitude fufficiently difco-
vered by Mr Harrifon's time keeper.

MONDAY 22.

Being the birth day of her Royal Highnes the Princess Caroline Matilda, youngest fifter to his Majefty, and defigned confort for the Prince Royal of Denmark, who then entered into the 15th year of her age, their Majeflies B received the compliments of the nobility and foreign minisers on that occafion.

TUESDAY 23.

The center of one of the middle arches of the new bridge at Black-frgars, was entirely ftruck, and that arch cleared for the use of the public. It is 22 feet wider than the wideft arch in Weminfier-bridge, 28 feet C wider than the great arch at London Bridge, three feet wider than the batted Rialto at Venice, yet two feet less than the wideft arch of the fame bridge.

WEDNESDAY 24.

A young American from Carolina, was apprehended, and carried to Brifol, on fufpicion of forgery. He arrived at that port about a fortnight ago, and very expeditiously D contracted for goods to a confiderable amount, fome hundred pounds worth of which he got fhipt for London next day, and having paffed a bill in payment; he fet cut immediately himself by land. His fudden departure, and fome other corroborating circumstances raised a fufpicion that the bill was forged, on which a proper officer was immediately difpatched in pursuit of him, who having ap- E prehend d him. carried tim before a magif trate, and, on his examination, bills to a great value was found upon him, all fuppofed to be forged.

THURSDAY 25.

At a court of common council, a petition from the magiarates of the city of Konigs berg, in the dominions of Pruia, was read, F fetting forth the immenfe lofs that city fuftained by the dreadful fire that lately aged there, and praying afliftance; when it appearing that the lofs ladained amounting to 600,000l. being above the faculties of any fingle corporation, their agent was advifed to apply for a general brief. This petition was addreffed to the most illuftrious, noble, learned, and venerable, the Lord Mayor and Senators of the renowned city of London, &c. WEDNESDAY 31,

A difcovery has lately been made in Sweden. of a medical tree, known by the name of Quafi-wood, of more powerful virtues than the Quinquinna, for intermittant fever, Sc.

A late confpiracy again the life of the King of Portugal, has been discovered and defeated; it is fuppofed to have been formed by Jefuirical emillaries, and the poison was to he administered by the hands of a pious

A dreadful inundation lately laid under wa ter confiderable diaries both in Naples and France. In the former it wash'd away the whale land of Rocca-di-Montepiano, men, womeu, and cattle; and, in the latter, it over flowed a great part of the province of Auvergne. In the town of Billon the deluge rofe fo taft from Atory to fory, that there was no other way left for the people to fave themfelves than by getting on the roofs of hoults. The damage is inexpreffible.
