The following selection was occasioned by a demand for a Manual of Hymns adapted for use in neighborhood and other Social Meetings, embracing individuals under the various operations of the Holy Spirit; and by christians of different denominations whose efforts are in many cases happily united for the salvation of men. preparation the love of novelty and of change has been suppressed, while the most devout and spiritual effusions of Watts, Newton, Cowper, Doddridge, Steele, and others, adapted equally to the learned and the unlearned, have been sought; and notwithstanding the variety of readings which have been extensively spread before the public, it is hoped that most christians will find the following hymns in the same form in which they have committed many of them to memory, and been accustomed to employ them in their songs of praise.

No. pains has been spared in the simplicity of the arrangement and indexes, as well as the character of the type, to render the book convenient and acceptable to all; and it goes forth with the prayer from many hearts, that God will make it the means of spiritual refreshment to his people, and of awakening in thousands, now far from him, songs of Redeeming mercy that shall never end.
