ART. 67. Forelaefninger over det Danske Sprog, eller refonneret Dank Grammatik, ved Jacob Baden, &c.; det 2 forbedrede og formerede Oplag. Lures on the Danish Language, or a rational Danish Grammar, by Prof. Baden; the Second Edition, with Additions and Improvements. Copenhagen; XVI. XVIII. and 362 pp. in large 8vo.

The first edition of this work was published in 1785, and has long been very scarce. In this re-impreffion it has been carefully revifed by the author, who has likewife enriched it with new obfervations, and with an additional chapter on punctuation. Mr. B. wishes, in order to establish a greater uniformity both in the orthography and idiom of the language, that not only a grammar, but a dictionary alfo, formed on the principles of that grammar, might be published by authority under the inspection of a learned fociety, fuch as that of Belles-Lettres, at Copenhagen; as was the cafe with refpect to those of Sahlfted, for the Swedish language, and we are of opinion that the adoption of fuch a measure as well for the vernacular tongues of every country, as for the learned languages, would be attended with the most beneficial confequences, provided that reftriction was confined to the inftruction of young perfons in public schools only.

The prefent work confifts of three parts. The first, or paradig matic, part treats, in fifteen chapters, of the Pronunciation, the Articles, the Subftantives, the Gender of Subftantives, the Plural of Subftantives, the Declenfion of Subftantives; of Adjectives, with their Declenfion and Comparifon, of Diminutives, and Numeral Nouns, of the Pronoun, the Verb, Adverb, Prepofition, Conjunction, and Interjection. In the Second Part are contained eleven chapters; on the Article, on the Concord of Subftantives and Adjectives, the Pronoun, the Verb in general, the Paffive, the Imperfonal Verbs, Modes, Tenfes, Participles, on the anomalous Conftruction of Prepofitions, and on their regular ufe; in which are to be found many excellent and ingenious remarks. In the Third Part, on Profody, forming eight chapters, are confidered the Quantity of Syllables, Feet, Rhyme, the different fpecies of Verse, the Caefura, the Strophes, and Arrangement of Verfes in a poem, the Harmony of verfes, and, lastly, the imitation of Greek and Latin measures in the Danish language.

Upon the whole, we cannot doubt that this is the most complete fyftem of Grammatical inftructions for the Danish language, that has yet appeared in that country, and we fhould, therefore, recommend it to thofe among our readers, who would wish to acquire a fatisfactory knowledge of that idiom, the importance of which to the literary world has of late greatly increased, instead of the more ancient, and lefs fuccefsful attempts of Syv, Pontoppidan, Höysgaard, and others.

Kiöbenhavn, laerde Efterretning.

ACKNOW

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS TO CORRESPONDENTS.

We have too much refpect for Mifopfeudetairos to print his Letter which is full of mifapprehenfions. The Critique to which he alludes, was not fent us by any Correfpondent, and on the most careful Review of the Article, we perfevere in our opinion, that it is alike pertinent and candid. The Writer may have his Letter by calling at our Publishers.

We have received a friendly remonstrance concerning the account we gave of "Caleb Williams." On examination of the Book, and of the Article, we find that an Apology is ne ceffary, and we thus candidly make it, on the part of the Gentleman whose communication we inferted. The most aimable Character in the Work, does not refufe to fhackle his dying Friend in the fetters of Superftition. The cafe is reverfed, it is the perfon who is dying, that refufes to fhackle the Friend who attends him with the fetters of Superftition; by which fetters, we now perceive, he did not allude to Religion, but to the facredness of a foleinn promife.

We cannot poffibly tell whether any account of the Embaffy to Pekin will be publifhed, but we with that Fum Hoam had paid the poftage of his Letter, though perhaps it is not the custom in Pekin.

S. P. of Dereham is defired to inform us, whether a Letter with that direction will reach him, as we wish to fend a private answer at large to his Communication.
