Travel writer and photographer Simon Richmond lived in Tokyo from 1991 to 1994 when he studied Japanese and worked as an editor for the major Japanese financial newspaper the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, and a freelance journalist. He's since returned to Japan many times including to research all five editions of this guide, the Rough Guide to Tokyo and the Rough Guide to Anime. His writing on Japan has appeared in publications around the world and he's the author of many guidebooks on other destinations for places as diverse as Cape Town, Russia, Malaysia and Sydney.
