PROVISIONS AND PROMISES

284

A

OF THE GOSPEL.

10th P. M. 8 lines 8s.

The fountain of living waters.
FOUNTAIN of life and of grace
In Christ, our Redeemer, we see:
For us, who his offers embrace,
For all, it is open and free:
Jehovah, himself, doth invite

To drink of his pleasures unknown :
The streams of immortal delight,
That flow from his heavenly throne.
2 As soon as in him we believe,
By faith of his Spirit we take:
And, freely forgiven, receive
The mercy for Jesus's sake!
We gain a pure drop of his love;
The life of eternity know;
Angelical happiness prove,
And witness a heaven below.

285

All-sufficiency of the gospel.

C. M.

THE gospel! O, what endless charms
gospello, What endless.

Its influence every fear disarms,
And spreads delight around.

2 Here pardon, life, and joy divine,
In rich effusion flow,

For guilty rebels, lost in sin,

And doom'd to endless wo.

3 The' almighty Former of the skies Stoops to our vile abode;

While angels view with wond'ring eyes,

And hail the' incarnate God.

4 How rich the depths of love divine!
Of bliss a boundless store!
Redeemer, let me call thee mine,-
Thy fulness I implore.

5 On thee alone my hope relies;
Beneath thy cross I fall;

My Lord, my life, my sacrifice,
My Saviour, and my all!

286

W

Our debt paid upon the cross.

S. M.

THAT majesty and grace
Through all the gospel shine!
'Tis God that speaks, and we confess
The doctrine most divine.

2 Down from his throne on high,
The mighty Saviour comes;
Lays his bright robes of glory by,
And feeble flesh assumes.

3 The debt that sinners owed,
Upon the cross he pays:

Then through the clouds ascends to God, 'Midst shouts of loftiest praise.

4 There our High Priest appears,
Before his Father's throne;
Mingles his merits with our tears,
And pours salvation down.
5 Great Sov'reign, we adore
Thy justice and thy grace,

And on thy faithfulness and power
Our firm dependence place.

287

The divine Teacher.

L. M.

TOW sweetly flow'd the gospel's sound From lips of gentleness and grace, While list'ning thousands gather'd round, And joy and rev'rence fill'd the place.

2 From heaven he came, of heaven he spoke,
To heaven he led his foll'wers' way;
Dark clouds of gloomy night he broke,
Unveiling an immortal day.

3 Come, wand'rers, to my Father's home;
Come, all ye weary ones, and rest.
Yes, sacred Teacher! we will come,
Obey, and be forever blest.
4 Decay, then, tenements of dust!
Pillars of earthly pride, decay!
A nobler mansion waits the just,
And Jesus has prepared the way.

288

All-sufficient grace.

S. M.

YRACE! 'tis a charming sound,

G Harmonious to the ear;

Heaven with the echo shall resound,
And all the earth shall hear.

2 Grace first contrived a way
To save rebellious man;
And all the steps that grace display,
Which drew the wondrous plan.

3 Grace taught my roving feet
To tread the heavenly road;
And new supplies each hour I meet,
While pressing on to God.

4 Grace all the work shall crown,
Through everlasting days;

It lays in heaven the topmost stone,
And well deserves our praise.

289

The wonders of redemption.

C. M.

H Which in redemption shine;

OW great the wisdom, power, and grace,

The heavenly host with joy confess
The work is all divine.

2 Before his feet they cast their crowns,-
Those crowns which Jesus gave,—
And, with ten thousand thousand tongues,
Proclaim his power to save.

3 They tell the triumphs of his cross,
The suff'rings which he bore;
How low he stoop'd, how high he rose,—
And rose to stoop no more.

4 With them let us our voices raise,
And still the song renew;
Salvation well deserves the praise
Of men and angels too.

290

THER

Efficacy of the atoning blood.

C. M.

HERE is a fountain fill'd with blood,
Drawn from Immanuel's veins;

And sinners, plunged beneath that flood,
Lose all their guilty stains.

2 The dying thief rejoiced to see
That fountain in his day;

And there may I, though vile as he,
Wash all my sins away.

3 Thou dying Lamb! thy precious blood
Shall never lose its power,

Till all the ransom'd Church of God
Are saved, to sin no more.

4 E'er since, by faith, I saw the stream
Thy flowing wounds supply,
Redeeming love has been my theme,
And shall be, till I die.

5 Then in a nobler, sweeter song,
I'll sing thy power to save,

When this poor lisping, stamm'ring tongue, Lies silent in the grave.

291

The joyful sound.

C. M.

ALVATION! O the joyful sound!
What pleasure to our ears;

A sov'reign balm for every wound,
A cordial for our fears.
2 Salvation! let the echo fly
The spacious earth around,
While all the armies of the sky
Conspire to raise the sound.
3 Salvation! O thou bleeding Lamb!
To thee the praise belongs:
Salvation shall inspire our hearts,
And dwell upon our tongues.

292

Love which passeth knowledge.

L. M.

Him who did salvation bring,

01 could forever think and sing;

Arise, ye needy,—he 'll relieve;
Arise, ye guilty,—he'll forgive.

2 Ask but his grace, and lo, 'tis given;
Ask, and he turns your hell to heaven:
Though sin and sorrow wound my soul,
Jesus, thy balm will make it whole.

3 To shame our sins he blush'd in blood;
He closed his eyes to show us God:
Let all the world fall down and know,
That none but God such love can show.
4 'Tis thee I love, for thee alone
I shed my tears and make my moan;
Where'er I am, where'er I move,
I meet the object of my love.
5 Insatiate to this spring I fly;
I drink, and yet am ever dry:
Ah! who against thy charms is proof?
Ah! who that loves, can love enough?
