and receive us with so much the warmer friendship and esteem, for the shyness and severity with which they have cast us out. Till these times of refreshing shall come from Christ's presence, we will, by his grace, bear patiently the unrighteous censures of rash men; not rendering railing for railing, but contrariwise blessing, knowing that thereunto we are called; being the followers of an insulted JESUS, who also, when upon earth, was, by bigotry and blind zeal, called a Samaritan and a sinner!

BEING A COLLECTION FROM AUTHENTIC AUTHORS, OF THEIR INHUMAN BARBARITIES EXERCISED UPON PAGANS, JEWS, MAHOMETANS,

AND CHRISTIANS.

I cannot but extremely pity Spain, my native country, because I am greatly afraid God will utterly destroy it, for the enor mous crimes committed by the Spaniards in the Indies.-The outrages and crueltics these innocent people (the Indians) have felt, are so horrid and notorious, that their tears, and groans, and blood, the cry of which have reached the throne of God, will undoubtedly draw down vengeance, and God will make all Spain feel the effects of his wrath.

SPANISH CRUELTY

AND

INJUSTICE &c.

IMPENDING war, like a black and porten

tous cloud, seems to rise and darken the face of our heavens. Whether it will descend in soft and fertile showers, and bless the land with its effects; or whether it will pour a wasting storm upon us, God alone can tell. Every lover of his country, when this is its state, will feel his breast labouring with some painful concern. There are some circumstances, it must be owned, which seem to speak fear and discouragement to Great Britain; our unthankfulness for heaven's many and distinguishing favours; our mutual envyings and party zeal; and the prevailing licentiousness and corruption of manners, which too generally appears amongst us, may justly make us doubt, whether the present war be not designed to humble, and to correct us. It becomes us, each therefore in his station, and the whole nation in general, to repent, and to give glory to God who hath power over this plague, that it may not pour down upon us its destructive effects.

But amidst our various grounds for fear, there seem much greater for hope. I beg leave to point out a few of them, to strengthen and keep up that spirit of resolution with which the nation
