The following Sermon is published by request: and is dedicated, with feelings of sincere regard, ΤΟ JOHN FRYER, ESQ. High Sheriff of the Counties of Huntingdon and Cambridge. In offering it to the Public, the Author begs to state, that it was written at a moment of deep distress the death of a beloved brother: which circumstance, he hopes, will be accepted as some excuse for the many defects which he is conscious exist in it. May it find circulation just so far as it is culculated to be instrumental to the honour of God and the welfare of man! Chatteris, July 25th, 1835. B 2 SERMON. DEUT. iv, 7, 8. For what nation is there so great, who hath God so nigh unto them, as the Lord our God is in all things that we call upon Him for? And what nation is there so great, that hath Statutes and Judgments so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day? Of all Lawgivers, of whom we have any knowledge, Moses stands first both in order of time and in sacredness of character. All others, whether it has been acknowledged by them or not, have borrowed from him: and all, or almost all, others, seeing the absolute necessity of making Religion the groundwork of all law, have vainly arrogated to themselves that which was granted to him alone-namely, inspiration, and immediate communication with Heaven. The laws which he promulgated were 66 not his own, but the laws of the Most High:he was the mouth of God: to him God spake face to face. The truth and evidence of which did not (as in the case of the pretenders alluded to) rest on his own bare assertion, but was declared in the presence of the whole nation, when the God of Israel descended upon Sinai in fire, and the smoke ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly; and the voice of the trumpet sounded long, and waxed louder and louder;" and all the people, terror-struck, " removed and stood afar off;" and Moses (though himself exceedingly afraid, yet at the command of God) "drew near unto the thick darkness where God was;" and, having remained forty days and forty nights in the Mount, received at his hand "the two tables of stone, written with the finger of God." Such pretensions, resting on such authority, (and it is not necessary for me to relate the many other instances in which they were miraculously supported) never fell to the lot of any except the Jewish Legislator. His laws stand on the truth-nay, on the very existence of God; and, with the exception of that which was ceremonial, and therefore restricted to the Jews, or typical, and therefore pointing to and |
