Chastise my soul but not destroy, And be my sorrows mix'd with joy, Joy, such as earth can ne'er bestow; Joy which Thy children only know.
Make Thou my longing soul Thine own, Thine would I be and Thine alone; Pour Thine own Spirit on my breast, And soothe each anxious thought to rest.
I will trust and not be afraid. Isaiah. xii. 2,
BEGONE, unbelief, my Saviour is near, And for my relief will surely appear; By pray'r let me wrestle, and He will perform, With Christ in the vessel, I smile at the storm.
Though dark be my way, since He is my guide, 'Tis mine to obey, 'tis His to provide; Though cisterns be broken, and creatures all fail The word he has spoken shall surely prevail.
His love in time past, forbids me to think He'll leave me at last in trouble to sink; Each sweet Ebenezer I have in review Confirms His good pleasure to help me quite thro'
Since all that I meet shall work for my good, The bitter is sweet, and the med'cine is food; Though painful at present, 'twill cease before long,
And then, O how pleasant the conqueror's song.
OFT as the bell with solemn toll, Speaks the departure of a soul, Let each one ask himself, am I Prepar'd, should I be called to die?
Lord Jesus! help me now to flee, And seek my hope alone in Thee; Apply Thy blood, Thy Spirit give, Subdue my sins, and in me live.
Then when the solemn bell I hear, If sav'd from guilt, I need not fear: Nor would the thought distressing be, Perhaps it next may toll for me.
Rather my spirit would rejoice, And wait impatient for Thy voice; Glad when it bids me earth resign, Secure of heav'n, if Thou art mine.
HYMN XVI. L. M.
Coming of Christ's Kingdom. Matth. vi. 10. ASCEND Thy throne, Almighty King, And spread Thy glories all abroad; Let Thine own arm salvation bring, And be Thou known the gracious God.
Let millions bow before Thy seat, Let humble mourners see Thy face; Bring daring rebels to Thy feet; Subdu'd by Thy victorious grace.
Oh let the kingdoms of the world Become the kingdoms of the Lord; Let saints and angels praise Thy name, Be Thou thro' heav'n and earth ador'd.
Longing for the spread of the gospel.
O'ER these gloomy hills of darkness Look, my soul, be still, and gaze! See the promis'd day approaches, Day of universal grace. Blessed Jubilee,
Let thy glorious morning dawn!
Let the Indian, let the Negro, Let the rude Barbarians see That divine and glorious conquest Once obtain❜d on Calvary: Let the gospel,
Loud resound from pole to pole.
Fly abroad, thou mighty gospel, Win and conquer; never cease; May thy lasting wide dominion Multiply and still increase! Sway Thy sceptre,
Saviour, all the world around!
The spiritual Coronation.
ALL-HAIL the pow'r of Jesu's name! Let angels prostrate fall:
Bring forth the royal diadem, And crown Him Lord of all.]
Crown Him, ye martyrs of our God, Who from His altar call; Extol the stem of Jesse's rod, And crown Him Lord of all.
Ye chosen seed of Israel's race, A remnant weak and small! Hail Him who saves you by His-grace, And crown Him Lord of all.
Ye Gentile sinners, ne'er forget The wormwood and the gall; Go spread your trophies at His feet, And crown Him Lord of all.
Let ev'ry kindred, ev'ry tribe, On this terrestrial ball, To Him all majesty ascribe, And crown Him Lord of all.
O that, with yonder sacred throng, We at His feet may fall; We'll join the everlasting song, And crown Him Lord of all.
To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, The God whom we adore,
Be glory as it was, is now, And shall be evermore.
To God the Father, Son, And Spirit, glory be;
As 'twas, and is, and shall be so To all eternity.
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heav'nly host, Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
By angels in heav'n Of ev'ry degree, And saints upon earth,
All praise be address'd, To God three in person, One God ever bless'd; As it has been, now is, And always shall be.
