Give us grace to consider that by the merciful goodness of God, we are delivered from a world of dangers, which would otherwise overwhelm us.

Preserve me O God, from the insensibility of those who receive thy favours without being affected by them and the ingratitude of those who look upon them as a debt.

Praise the Lord, O my soul and all that is within me, praise his holy name.

Praise the Lord, O my soul and forget not all his benefits, who saveth thy life from destruction and crowneth thee with loving kindness and tender mercy, who forgiveth all thy sins and healeth all thine iniquity.

Lord what is man that thou art mindful of him, or the sons of men that thou so regardeth them.

I am oppressed with a load of mercies, which I have received from thee.

Glory be to thee O God my Creator, glory

be to thee O Jesus my Redeemer, glory be to the Holy Ghost my sanctifier, my guide, my comforter.

All love, all glory be to the high and undivided trinity whose works are inseparable, and whose dominion endureth world without end. Amen.

My God make me truly sensible of this mercy, and give me grace to consider often how short and uncertain my time is; that there is one more year added to a short life passed over my head; and that I am so much nearer to eternity; that I may in good earnest think of another life, and be so prepared for it, as that death may not overtake me unawares.

Lord pardon all my mispent time, and make me more diligent and careful, to redeem it for the time to come, that when I come to the end of my days, I may look back with comfort on the days that are past.

Grant that I may begin this new year with new resolutions of serving God more faithfully,

and if through infirmity or negligence, I forget these good purposes, the good Lord awaken in me a sense of my danger.

My heart is in thy hands, as well as my time -O make me wise unto salvation, that I may consider in this my day, the things that belong unto my peace, and that I may pass this, and all the days I have yet to live, in a comfortable hope of a blessed eternity, for Jesus Christ's sake......Amen.

THE following prayers from the holy scriptures will I hope be frequently used by those who wish to attain to the true religion of the bible.

They are the confessions and supplications and thanksgivings of great and holy men. We may use them with safety. The authors of them were high in favour with God; and if we would get into favour with him also, it must be by using the same prayers, by feeling them, and living accordingly.

The proud and self righteous pharisee and moralist, will find nothing in them congenial to his feelings; but the humble, penitent, sin-sick, contrite sinner, will defight in them, and find the feelings of his heart forcibly expressed in them.

Let those who cannot yet feel the extreme wickedness of their hearts, often read over these, and through them pray to the Almighty to shew them how sinful they are. If these holy men made such humble confessions in the sincerity of their hearts, (and who can doubt it) must not such persons conclude that they are yet ignorant of the corruption of their natures, so long as they cannot feel it in their hearts to fall before God and thus bewail themselves?

The following prayers may be taken up at any moment of the day, when time may be wanting to retire and go through a regular form. They may easily be gotten by heart, and repeated on all occasions, whereever we may be, under any trials or temptations. They are the best possible ways of addressing the Deity. It is earnestly recommended that they be frequently read and used, together with those short ejaculations which are in the preceeding part of the work, following after select passages of scripture.

Wise and experienced christian writers have often recommended this as the most useful kind of devotion, to wit: to take up the bible and fix the attention on some text of scripture, and then lift the heart in some ejaculation about it.

In this work that plan is executed. The prayers of Bishop Wilson, which are made on texts of scripture, are inimitable, and the following passages of scripture, are perhaps the best that can be selected for meditation.

There are also in this appendix, many remarkable texts, containing invitations and sure promises to prayer, which ought frequently to be read, and engraven on the memory.

The following remarks and directions concerning prayer, are chiefly taken from Bishop Taylor.

"There is no greater argument in the world of our spiritual danger and unwillingness to religion, than the backwardness which most men have always, and all men have sometimes, to say their prayers; so weary of their
