THE CANONICAL HOURS

ACCORDING TO THE USE OF THE

Guild of 5. Alban.

PART I.

Matins.

The Matins of the Church of England.

When this Office is said in any place other than a Church or Chapel, it commenceth by the saying of the Lord's Prayer silently; after which in a loud voice is said,

O Lord, open Thou our lips.

And so the Office continueth until the third Collect, for Grace, O Lord, our heavenly Father, hath been said; then follow only the Anthem and Benediction.

Prime.

V. Come to our aid, O God.

R. O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost;

be;

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall * world without end. Amen.

THE HYMN.

(For which see the HYMNAL.)

THE PSALMS.

PSALM III.

LORD, how are they increased that trouble me;

many are they that rise against me.

*

Many one there be that say of my soul, * There is no help for him in his God.

But Thou, O Lord, art my defender; * Thou art my worship, and the Lifter up of my head.

I did call upon the Lord with my voice;* and He heard me out of His holy hill.

I laid me down and slept, and rose up again; * for the Lord sustained me.

I will not be afraid for ten thousands of the people, that have set themselves against me round about.

*

Up, Lord, and help me, O my God;* for Thou smitest all mine enemies upon the cheek-bone; Thou hast broken the teeth of the ungodly.

Salvation belongeth unto the Lord: * and Thy blessing is upon Thy people.

PSALM V.

PONDER my words, O Lord;* consider my medi

O hearken Thou unto the voice of my calling, my King, and my God; *for unto Thee will I make my

prayer.

My voice shalt Thou hear betimes, O Lord; * early in the morning will I direct my prayer unto Thee, and will look up.

For Thou art the God that hast no pleasure in wickedness; * neither shall any evil dwell with Thee.

Such as be foolish shall not stand in Thy sight; * for Thou hatest all them that work vanity.

*

Thou shalt destroy them that speak leasing: the Lord will abhor both the blood-thirsty and deceitful man. But as for me, I will come into Thine house, even upon the multitude of Thy mercy; * and in Thy fear will I worship toward Thy holy temple.

Lead me, O Lord, in Thy righteousness, because of mine enemies;* make Thy way plain before my face. For there is no faithfulness in his mouth; their inward parts are very wickedness.

Their throat is an open sepulchre; * they flatter with their tongue.

*

Destroy Thou them, O God; let them perish through their own imaginations; cast them out in the multitude of their ungodliness; for they have rebelled against Thee. And let all them that put their trust in Thee rejoice:* they shall ever be giving of thanks, because Thou defendest them; they that love Thy Name shall be joyful in Thee.

*

For Thou, Lord, wilt give Thy blessing unto the righteous; and with Thy favourable kindness wilt Thou defend him as with a shield.

PSALM LVII.

B for my soul trusteth in Thee;

E merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me,

* and under the

shadow of Thy wings shall be my refuge, until this tyranny be over-past.

I will call unto the most high God; * even unto the God that shall perform the cause which I have in hand. He shall send from heaven, * and save me from the reproof of him that would eat me up.

God shall send forth His mercy and truth: * my soul is among lions,

And I lie even among the children of men, that are set on fire;* whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword.

*

Set up Thyself, O God, above the heavens; and Thy glory above all the earth.

They have laid a net for my feet, and pressed down my soul:* they have digged a pit before me, and are fallen into the midst of it themselves.

*

My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is fixed; I will sing, and give praise.

Awake up, my glory; awake, lute and harp:* I myself will awake right early.

I will give thanks unto Thee, O Lord, among the people; * and I will sing unto Thee among the nations; For the greatness of Thy mercy reacheth unto the heavens, and Thy truth unto the clouds.
