CHAPTER II.

ΑΝ

ND after Jesus had been born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of Herod, the king, behold, wise men of the east came to Jerusalem,

2 saying, Where is he who hath been born King of the Jews? for we saw his star in Num. xxiv. the east, and are come to worship him.

17.

3 But when King Herod heard these words, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him;

4 and gathering together all the chief priests, and scribes of the people, he inquired of them, Where the Christ was to be born?

5 And they said to him, In Bethlehem of Judea; for it is thus written by the prophet,

6 "And thou Bethlehem, in Mich. v. 2. "the land of Judah, art not "the least among the princes "of Judah: for out of thee "shall come a Governor, who "shall rule my people Israel."

7 Then Herod, privately calling the wise men, learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared:

8 and sending them to Bethlehem, he said, Go, and search diligently for the child; and when ye have found him, bring me word, that I also may go and worship him.

9 And when they had heard

the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they had seen in the east, went before them, until it came and stood over the place where the child

was:

10 and when they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy:

:

11 and entering into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down, and worshipped him and when they had opened their treasures, they presented to him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh : 12 but, being warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way. 13 And when they had departed to their own country, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for, Herod is about to seek the child, to destroy him.

14 And he arose, and took the child and his mother by night, and departed departed into Egypt;

15 and was there until the death of Herod: that the word might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through Hos. xi. 1. the prophet, saying, " Out of "Egypt have I called my son."

16 Then Herod, when he saw that he had been mocked by the wise men, was exceeding wroth; and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all its borders, of two years old and somewhat under, according to the time which he had ascertained from the wise men. 17 Then was fulfilled fulfilled the word spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying,

66

18 A voice was heard in Jer. xxxi. 15. "Rama, lamentation, and "weeping, and great mourn"ing; Rachel weeping for "her children, and would not "be comforted, because they " are not."

19 But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,

20 saying, Arise, and take the child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they who sought the child's life, are dead.

21 And he arose, and took the child and his mother, and entered into the land of Israel;

22 but, hearing that Archelaus reigned in Judea in the place of his father Herod, he feared to go thither:

23 nevertheless, being warn- Luke, ii. 4, 39. ed in a dream, he returned into the country of Galilee; and came and dwelt in the city Ib. called Nazareth.

7 But, when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said to them, O offspring of vipers, who hath warned you to flee. from the wrath which is about

to come?

9 and think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham for our father: for I tell you, that God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham :

10 and already the axe is laid at the root of the trees; every tree, therefore, that bringeth not forth good fruit, is cut down, and cast into the fire.

11 I indeed baptize you with water, to repentance; but he who cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to carry; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit, and with fire:

12 whose fan is in his hand; and he will thoroughly purge his threshing-floor, and will gather his corn into his barn; but, the chaff he will burn c. xiii. 30. with unquenchable fire.

13 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to the Jordan, to John, to be baptized by him :

14 and John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized by thee, and comest thou to me?

15 but Jesus answering said to him, Suffer it now: for so it becometh us to accomplish Rom. iii. 25, the whole of justification. Then he suffered him.

26; xv. 8.

16 And when Jesus had been

baptized, he went up straightway out of the water: and,

8 Bring forth therefore fruit lo, the heavens were opened suited to repentance:

to him, and John saw the John, i. 32,33.
