'Matt. ix, 2-10. Mark ii, 3-15. Luke v, 17-29.

Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judæa, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them.

And, behold, men brought, they came unto him, bringing in a bed, 'one sick of the palsy, a man which was taken with a palsy, 5 1lying on a bed, which was borne of four: and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before him. And when they could not come nigh unto him for the press, and when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and uncovered the roof where he was: and when 10 they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay, 'and 'let him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst before Jesus. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, 'Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee.

But there were certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts, Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only? And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemeth. And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blas- 20 phemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?

2And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, he knowing their thoughts, answering said unto them, 'Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts? What reason ye in your hearts? Why reason ye these things in your hearts? 25 For whether is easier, 'is it easier, to say to the sick of the palsy, Thy .sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk? But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, 1(then, he saith to the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, thy couch, and go thy way into thine 30 house. And immediately he rose up before them, and took up the bed, that whereon he lay, and went forth before them all, 3and departed to his own house, glorifying God, insomuch that they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, We never saw it on this fashion, When the multitudes saw it, they marvelled, and glorified God, which 35 had given such power unto men. And they were all amazed, and they glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things to day.

And after these things he went forth, 1and as Jesus passed forth from thence, he went again by the sea side: and all the multitude resorted 40 unto him, and he taught them. And as he passed by, he saw 1a man, 3a publican, 'named Matthew, 'Levi, the son of Alphæus sitting at the receipt of custom: and he said unto him, Follow me. And he left all, rose up, and followed him.

2And it came to pass, that 'Levi made him a great feast in his own 45 house and there was a great company of publicans and of others, 1and it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold many publi

voice in the streets. A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory. And in his name shall the Gentiles trust.

And it came to pass in those days, that he went out, and he goeth up into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God. 5 And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples, whom he would: and they came unto him: 3and of them he chose twelve, and he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach, and to have power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils: whom also be named apostles; Simon, whom he also surnamed 10 Peter, and Andrew his brother; and James the son of Zebedee, and John the brother of James; and he surnamed them Boanerges, which is, The sons of thunder: Philip and Bartholomew, Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alphæus, and Thaddeus Judas the brother of James, and Simon the Canaanite called Zelotes, and Judas Iscariot 15which also was the traitor, which also betrayed him.

And he came down with them, and stood in the plain, and the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judæa and Jerusalem, and from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, which came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases; and they that 20were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed. And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all.

And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are ye that hunger 25 now for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh. Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake. Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in 30 the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets.

But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation. Woe unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Woe unto you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep. Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the 35 false prophets.

But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you. And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other: and him that taketh away thy cloke forbid 40 not to take thy coat also.

Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again.

And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them

likewise.

3For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinmers also love those that love them. And if ye do good to them which

3do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same. And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again. But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of 5 the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.

Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful. Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven: give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, 10 and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

"And he spake a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch?

"The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect 15 shall be as his master.

And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? 20 Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother's eye.

For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush 25 gather they grapes. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

3And why call ye me Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? 30 3Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it for it was founded upon a rock.

"But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.

Now when he had ended all his sayings in the audience of the people, he entered into Capernaum. And a certain centurion's servant, 40 who was dear unto him, was sick, and ready to die. And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant. And when they came to Jesus, they besought him instantly, saying, That he was worthy for whom he should do this: for he loveth our nation, and he hath built us 45 a synagogue. Then Jesus went with them. And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, 3and when he was now not far from the house,

3the centurion sent friends to him, 'there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him, and saying unto him, 'Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented. And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him. The centurion answered and said, "Lord, trouble not thyself: for I am not worthy that thou 'shouldest come, 'shouldest enter under my roof: wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee: but say in a word, 'speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. For I also am a man set under authority, having 'soldiers under me and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, 10 Do this, and he doeth it. When Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned him about, and said unto the people that followed him, 1Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, 15 in the kingdom of heaven. But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour. And they that were sent, returning to the house, 20 found the servant whole that had been sick.

And it came to pass the day after, that he went into a city called Nain; and many of his disciples went with him, and much people.

"Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a 25 widow and much people of the city was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said unto her, Weep not. And he came and touched the bier and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise. And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother. 30 And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people. And this rumour of him went forth throughout all Judæa, and throughout all the region round about.

1Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, 3and 35 the disciples of John shewed him of all these things, John calling unto him two of his disciples, sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another? When the men were come unto him, they said, John Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another? And in that same hour 40 he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight. Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell, 'and shew John again what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind 'receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are 45 raised 1up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.

And when the messengers of John were departed, 1and as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes, to speak unto the people concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness for to see? A reed shaken with the wind? But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they which are gorgeously 5 apparelled, they that wear soft clothing, and live delicately, are 1in kings' houses, 'in kings' courts. But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet. For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. For, 1verily 10 I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater prophet than John the Baptist: 'notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven, 3of God, 1is greater than he. And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force. For all the 15 prophets and the law prophesied until John. And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John. But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not bap- 20 tized of him.

And the Lord said, 'but whereunto, then shall I liken the men of this generation? and to what are they like? They are like unto children sitting in the marketplace, and caliing one to another, 1unto their fellows, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not 25 danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented, 3ye have not wept. For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and ye land they say, He hath a devil. The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye, 'and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But 30 wisdom is justified of all her children.

1Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not.

1 1Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and 35 Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. But say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you.

And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done 40 in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.

1At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the 45 wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes. Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight.
