TUTIONS.

CHAPTER I.

EDUCATIONAL.

SECTION I.

Educational Society.

419. In order to combine in one effort the entire educational work of our Church, Societies for that purpose shall be formed on all circuits and missions in our work on the following constitution :

I.-NAME.

420. This Society shall be known as The Educational Society of the Methodist Church of Canada.

II. OBJECT.

421. The objects of this Society shall be to assist in maintaining our Universities, Theological Schools, and Higher Mission Schools; to defray the expenses of the Examination of Candidates for the Ministry in our Church; and to aid such candidates in obtaining a suitable education.

III. MEMBERS.

422. All subscribers of two dollars per annum and up

wards shall be members of the Society, and entitled to a copy of the Annual Report.

IV. MANAGEMENT.

423. The management of the Society shall be vested in a Secretary and Treasurers, together with an Advisory Committee, to be appointed by the General Conference, one of whom shall be the President of the General Conference.

V.-BRANCHES.

424. A branch of the Society shall be organized in each Annual Conference, under the management of a Committee of such Conference, composed as follows:

The President of the Conference, and four Ministers and four Laymen, and a Secretary and Treasurer appointed by the Annual Conference.

425. Sermons shall be preached on behalf of the Society, and collections taken up in aid of its funds, in all our churches and preaching places, at such time as may be directed by the Financial District Meeting.

426. A branch of the Society shall be organized on each Circuit or Mission, under whose direction meetings shall be held at which the claims of our Educational work shall be placed before our people and collections and subscriptions taken for the funds of the Society.

VII. DIVISION OF INCOME.

427. The Treasurer of each Annual Conference shall immediately at the close of his Conference remit to the General Treasurers one-half the net amount raised by his Conference, retaining the other half to be disbursed under the

direction of the Committee of his Conference. The General Treasurer shall disburse the fund thus formed, first, for the payment of expenses authorized by the Advisory Committee; secondly, for the extinction of the existing debt in two, three, or four years, as may be deemed most prudent by the Advisory Committee; thirdly, to aid the institutions in which our ministry are educated in the following proportions:-Victoria College, Faculty of Arts, onethird of the balance; ditto, Faculty of Theology, one-sixth. Montreal Wesleyan Theological College, one-fourth, Mount Allison Wesleyan College, one-fourth.

VIII. ANNUAL CONFERENCE COMMITTEE.

428. Each Annual Conference Committee shall meet at the time and place of the meeting of its Conference for the following purposes :

(1) To consider the cases of all candidates recommended by District Meetings to attend College and report to Conference the amount of aid, if any, to be given to each, and the College he shall attend.

(2) To examine and order the payment of the approved accounts of expenses of examinations within the bounds of their Conference and of examiners appointed for the Theological Schools by their Conference.

IX. DUTIES OF THE GENERAL SECRETARY.

429. It shall be the duty of the General Secretary, under the direction of the Advisory Committee, to prepare and publish the Annual Report, and to discharge such other duties as may be assigned him by the Committee.
