Thou, O man of God, &c. follow after righteousness, godliness, &c.

1 Tim. vi. 11.

Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, &c.-2 Tim. ii. 22. For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared, &c. teaching us, that denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world. Titus ii. 11, 12.

Put them in mind, &c. to be ready to every good work, &c. A faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God, might be careful to maintain good works. Titus iii. 1. 8.

Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, &c. Follow peace, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.-Heb. xii. 1. 14.

Remember them which have the rule over you, &c. whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation.-Heb. xiii. 7.

Who is a wise man? &c. Let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.James iii. 13.

Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.-James iv. 8.

As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts, in your ignorance: but as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; because it is written, Be ye holy, for I am holy.-1 Pet. i. 14, 15.

Ye are a chosen generation, &c. that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you, &c. Abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul, having your conversation honest among the Gentiles, that whereas (or wherein) they speak against you as evil-doers, they may by your good works which they shall

behold, glorify God in the day of visitation, &c. So is the will of God, that with well-doing ye may, &c. We being dead to sins should live unto righteousness.-1 Pet. ii. 9. 11, 12. 15. 24; 1 Tim. v. 14; Titus ii. 5.

Let him eschew evil, and do good, &c. Who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good? &c. Sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and be always ready to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear; having a good conscience; that whereas they speak evil of you, as of evil doers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ. 1 Pet. iii. 11. 13. 15, 16.

The time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, &c. If any man minister, &c. that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ.1 Pet. iv. 3. 11.

Giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, and to virtue knowledge, and to knowledge temperance, &c. godliness, &c. If these things be in you, and abound, they make you that you shall not be unfruitful, &c. Give diligence to make your calling and election sure.-2 Pet. i. 5-8. 10.

Seeing that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness? &c. Wherefore, beloved, seeing ye look for such things, be diligent, that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.-2 Pet. iii. 11. 14.

God is light, &c. If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth; but if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, &c.—1 John i. 5-7.

These things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate, &c. He that saith, he abideth in him, ought himself also to walk even as he walked.-1 John ii. 1. 6.

Every man that hath this hope in O love the Lord, all ye saints, &c. him, purifieth himself, even as he is-Ps. xxxi. 23. pure, &c. He that doeth righteousness, is righteous, even as he is righteous.-1 John iii. 3. 7.

I AM the Lord thy God, &c. shewing

The Lord our God, one Lord. And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.-Deut. vi. 4, 5.

The Lord thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him.Deut. vii. 9.

And now, Israel, what doth God require of thee, but, &c. to love him, and to serve the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul?Deut. x. 12.

I love the Lord, because he hath heard my voice.-Ps. cxvi. 1.

Thy name is as ointment poured forth; therefore do the virgins love thee.-Cant. i. 3.

If ye find my beloved, &c. tell him that I am sick of love.-Cant. v. 8.

Thus saith the Lord, I remember thee, (or for thy sake,) the kindness of thy youth, the love of thy espousals, when thou wentest after me in the wilderness.-Jer. ii. 2.

Judah hath profaned the holiness of the Lord, which he loved, (or ought to love.)-Mal. ii. 11.

He that loveth father or mother, &c. is not worthy of me, &c.-Matt. x. 37; Luke xiv. 26.

Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment, &c. On these, &c. hang all the law and the prophets.-Matt. xxii. 37-40.

Iniquity shall abound; the love of many shall wax cold.-Matt. xxiv. 12.

Her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.-Luke vii. 47.

He that loveth me, shall be loved of my Father; and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him, &c. We will come unto him, and make our abode with him.-John xiv. 21.

Therefore thou shalt love the Lord thy God, &c. If you shall hearken, &c. to love the Lord your God, and to serve him with all your heart, &c. that I will, &c.-Deut. xi. 1. 13, 14.22.23. The Lord your God proveth you, Peter, &c. lovest thou me more to know whether ye love the Lord than these? He saith unto him, Yea, your God with all your heart, and Lord; thou knowest that I love thee, with all your soul.-Deut. xiii. 3. &c. Again, the second and third time. And the Lord thy God will circum--John xxi. 15-17.

all mysteries, &c. I have all faith, &c. and have not charity, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing, &c. Charity never faileth, &c. Now abideth faith, hope, charity; but the greatest of these is charity.-1 Cor. xiii. 1-3. 8. 13.

If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be Anathema, Maranatha.-1 Cor. xvi. 22.

Whether we be beside ourselves, it is to God, &c. for the love of Christ constraineth us.-2 Cor. v. 13, 14. Circumcision availeth nothing, &c. but faith, which worketh by love, &c. the fruit of the Spirit is love.-Gal.

v. 6. 22.

The Lord direct your hearts unto the love of God.-2 Thess. iii. 5.

Hearing of thy love, &c. which thou hast toward the Lord Jesus, &c.-Philem. 5.

God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed towards his name.— Heb. vi. 10.

Jesus Christ, whom having not seen ye love.-1 Pet. i. 7, 8.

God is love: and he that dwelleth in love, dwelleth in God, and God in him. There is no fear in love, but perfect love casteth out fear, &c. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. We love him, because he first loved us. If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? 1 John iv. 16. 18-20.

By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, &c.-1 John v. 2.

I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, &c.-Rev. ii. 4, 5.

SECT. 3.-As fruits of Love to God and Christ: 1. To delight themselves in him, long for, and pant after him: make their boast of, and glory and rejoice in God and Christ, as their Portion and Rest; and, 2. To obey, and hearken to him.

I WILL not go up in the midst of thee, &c. When the people heard these evil tidings, they mourned, and, &c. My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest. And he said unto him, If thy presence go not, carry us not up hence.-Exod. xxxiii. 3, 4. 14, 15.

Their rock is not as our rock, even our enemies themselves being judges. -Deut. xxxii. 31.

I rejoice in thy salvation: there is none holy as the Lord, for there is none beside thee; neither is there any rock like our God, &c.-1 Sam. ii. 1, 2.

All the house of Israel lamented after the Lord.-1 Sam. vii. 2.

The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; the God of my rock, &c. my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, and my saviour. Who is God, save the Lord? And who is a rock, save our God?-2 Sam. xxii. 2, 3. 32; Ps. lxxi. 3.

When he giveth quietness, who then can make trouble? And when he hideth his face, who then can behold him? &c.-Job xxxiv. 29.

Thou, O Lord, art a shield for (or about me;) my glory, and the lifter up of my head.-Ps. iii. 3. There be many who say, Who will shew us any good? Lord, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us. Thou hast put gladness in my heart, more than in the time that their corn and their wine increased.-Ps.iv. 6,7. I will be glad, and rejoice in thee:

I will sing praise to thy name, &c.- | his, &c. in his favour is life, &c. Lord, Ps. ix. 2. by thy favour, thou hast made my mountain to stand strong; thou didst hide thy face, and I was troubled.Ps. xxx. 4, 5. 7.

Why standeth thou afar off, O Lord? Why hidest thou thyself in times of trouble?--Ps. x. 1; lxxxviii. 14. How long wilt thou forget me, O Lord? for ever? How long wilt thou hide thy face from me?-Ps. xiii. 1; lxxiv. 9, 10.

The Lord is the portion of mine inheritance, and of my cup; thou maintainest my lot; the lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage, &c. In thy presence is fulness of joy: at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.-Ps. xvi. 5, 6. 11.

O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.-Ps. xix. 14.

We will rejoice in thy salvation: and in the name of our God we will set up our banners.-Ps. xx. 5.

The king shall joy in thy strength, O Lord; and in thy salvation how greatly shall he rejoice?-Ps. xxi. 1. My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Why art thou so far from helping me? &c. Be not far from me, for trouble is near, &c. Be not thou far from me, O Lord, O my strength, &c.-Ps. xxii. 1. 11. 19; lxxxviii. 14, 15.

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want, &c. Thou art with me: thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.-Ps. xxiii. 1. 4.

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in his temple, &c. My heart said unto thee, Thy face, Lord, will I seek. Hide not thy face far from me; put not thy servant away in anger: thou hast been my help: leave me not, neither forsake me, O God of my salvation.-Ps xxvii. 1. 4. 8, 9.

Sing unto the Lord, O ye saints of

Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt encompass me about with songs of deliverance, &c. Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, ye righteous; and shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart.-Ps. xxxii. 7. 11.

Our soul waiteth for the Lord; he is our help, and our shield; for our heart shall rejoice in him.-Ps. xxxiii. 20, 21; xciv. 17.

My soul shall make her boast in the Lord, &c. O magnify the Lord with me; let us exalt his name together, &c. O taste and see that the Lord is good.-Ps. xxxiv. 2, 3. 8.

How excellent (or precious) is thy loving-kindness, O God, &c. For with thee is the fountain of life; in thy light shall we see light.-Ps. xxxvi. 7.9.

Delight thyself also in the Lord, &c.-Ps. xxxvii. 4.

Surely every man walketh in a vain show, &c. And now, Lord, what wait I for? my hope is in thee.-Ps. xxxix. 6, 7.

As the hart panteth after the waterbrooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall ĺ come and appear before God? my tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God? When I remember those things, I pour out my soul in me; for I had gone with the multitude, &c. to the house of God, &c. Why art thou cast down, O my soul? &c. Hope thou in God, &c.Ps xlii. 1–5. 11.

Thou art the God of my strength: why dost thou cast me off? Then will I go, &c. unto God my exceeding joy, (or the gladness of my joy.)Ps. xliii. 2. 4.

In God we boast all the day long
Ps. xliv. 8.

As we have heard, so have we seen in the city of the Lord of hosts, &c. According to thy name, O God, so is thy praise, unto the ends of the earth, &c. This God is our God for ever and ever: he will be our guide even unto death.-Ps. xlviii. 8. 10. 14; Ezra viii. 22.

Cast me not away from thy presence, &c. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation.-Ps. li. 11, 12; cxix.

O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, &c. to see thy power and thy glory, so as I have seen thee in the sanctuary; because thy loving-kindness is better than life, &c. My soul followeth hard after thee.-Ps. lxiii. 1-3. 8.

Blessed is the man whom thou choosest, and causest to approach unto thee, that he may dwell in thy courts: we shall be satisfied with the goodness of thy house, even of thy holy temple.-Ps. lxv. 4.

He that is our God is the God of salvation and unto God the Lord belong the issues from death, &c.Ps. lxviii. 20.

Whom have I in heaven, but thee? and there is none upon earth whom I desire beside thee. My flesh and my heart faileth; but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever, &c. It is good for me to draw near to God.-Ps. lxxiii. 25, 26. 28. Who is so great a God as our God?-Ps. lxxvii. 13.

Turn us again, O God, and cause thy face to shine, and we shall be saved.-Ps. lxxx. 3. 7. 19.

How amiable are thy tabernacles, O Lord of hosts! My soul longeth, yea, even fainteth for the courts of the Lord my heart and my flesh crieth out for the living God. Blessed are they that dwell in thy house, &c. Behold, O God our shield, &c. For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than

to dwell in the tents of wickedness: for the Lord God is a sun, and a shield, &c.-Ps. lxxxiv. 1,2.4.9-11; xxvi. 8; cxxii. 1.

Blessed is the people that know the joyful sound: they shall walk, O Lord, in the light of thy countenance; in thy name shall they rejoice all the day, &c. For thou art the glory of their strength: and in thy favour our horn shall be exalted. The Lord is our defence; and the Holy One of Israel is our king, &c. How long, O Lord, wilt thou hide thy face, for ever?-Ps. lxxxix. 15–18. 46.

In the multitude of my thoughts within me, thy comforts delight my soul.-Ps. xciv. 19. 22.

Rejoice in the Lord, ye righteous. -Ps. xcvii. 12.

My meditation of him shall be sweet: I will be glad in the Lord.— Ps. civ. 34.

He satisfieth the longing soul: and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.-Ps. cvii. 9; Prov. xxvii. 7.

The Lord is high above all nations, and his glory above the heavens. Who is like unto the Lord our God, who dwelleth on high? Who, &c.— Ps. cxiii. 4, 5.

Wherefore should the heathen say, Where is now their God? But our God is in the heavens; he hath done whatsoever he pleased.-Ps. cxv. 2, 3; lxxiv. 9, 10.

Return unto thy rest, O my soul! for the Lord hath dealt bountifully with thee.-Ps. cxvi. 7.

Thou art my portion, O Lord, &c. I intreated thy favour (or face) with my whole heart, &c. Make thy face to shine upon thy servant, &c.-Ps. cxix. 57, 58. 135.

My soul waiteth for the Lord, more than they that watch for the morning.-Ps. cxxx. 6.

I know that the Lord is great; and that our Lord is above all gods.-Ps. cxxxv. 5.

Thou art my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.-Ps. cxlii. 5. My soul thirsteth after thee, as a
