Autumn.

There is a beautiful spirit breathing now
Its mellow richness on the clustered trees,
And, from a beaker full of richest dyes,
Pouring new glory on the autumn woods,
And dripping in warm light the pillared cloud.
Morn on the mountain, like a summer bird,
Lifts up her purple wing, and in the vales
The gentle wind, a sweet and passionate wooer,
Kisses the blushing leaf, and stirs up life
Within the solemn woods.

The Wider World.

The intuitions of the human heart and the human mind, when strong and universal, are always true, although the form of truth may be vague and crude. The function of science is not to destroy these, but to shape them.-LE CONTE.

Too much knowledge is bewildering. The feeling that a small boy has when alone in the mountains for the first time and suddenly realizes the awful immensity of his surroundings often comes to men—especially young men-when they get their first glimpse into the wide fields of scientific knowledge. When a person has been used to the world which is reached through the five senses -a world which is bounded in extent by the limits of memory or at most by history-he is apt to be rather dazzled at first when astronomy, chemistry, and geology throw open the doors of a universe im
