EDITOR'S PREFACE.

In preparing for the press a new edition of this powerful refutation and exposition of the falsehoods and forgeries of John Fox, the martyr-maker, we have carefully abstained from interfering with the forcible originality of style and composition so peculiar to its gifted author, by any extensive correction or alteration.

In consideration, however, of the improved friendly feeling and desire for information, which now, to a considerable extent, happily. prevail amongst the more intelligent and reflecting portion of the Protestant community, we have thought it judicious to substitute a more forbearing tone for certain severe epithets and expressions, which the indignant feelings of the writer led him to adopt, and which, though deservedly applied in dealing with such an unscrupulous forgerer, we consider unsuitable to the feverish excitement and nervous sensibility engendered by the restless eagerness of the anxious and sincere, but only partially convinced, searcher after religious truth.

We have also omitted small portions of matter here and there, which we consider unnecessary to maintain the argument, or to give force to the exposition, and which would
