13 you. Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. 14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot

killed them. Lu. xi. 47. Truly ye bear witness that ye allow the deeds of your fathers, for they indeed killed them, and ye build their sepulchres. Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they shall slay and persecute that the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation, from the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias, which perished between the altar and the temple. Verily I say unto you, it shall be required of this generation. Lu. xi. 48–51. O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings, and ye would not. Lu. xiii. 34. Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears (said Stephen), ye do always resist the Holy Ghost; as your fathers did so do ye. Ac. vii. 51. Ye, brethren, have suffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they have of the Jews, who both killed the Lord Jesus and their own prophets, and have persecuted us. And they pleased not God, and are contrary to all men, forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles, that they might be saved. 1 The. ii. 14-16. xxi. 35.

13 The salt of the earth.] Every oblation of thy meat-offering shalt thou season with salt; neither shalt thou suffer the salt of the covenant of thy God to be lacking from thy meat-offering; with all thine offerings thou shalt offer salt. Le. ii. 13. Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every

If the salt have lost his savour.] Every one shall be salted with fire, and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt. Salt is good, but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another. Mar. ix. 49, 50. Salt is good; but if the salt have lost his wherewith shall it be seasoned? It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill, but men cast it out. Lu. xiv. 34, 35. is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, and have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, if they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance! seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame. He. vi. 4-6. If, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus

Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than after they have known it to turn from the holy com. mandment delivered unto them. 2 Pe. ii. 20, 21.

14 The light of the world.] The path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day. Pr. iv. 18. He (John) was a burning and a shining light, and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light. John v. 95. While ye have light believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. John xii. 36. Behold, thou art called a Jew, and art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of them which are in darkness; an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, which hast the form of knowledge, and of the truth in the law. Ro. ii. 19, 20. Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers; for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighte ousness; and what communion hath light with darkness. 2 Co. vi. 14. Ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord; walk as children of light; have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. All things that are reproved are made manifest by the light; for whatsoever doth make manifest is light; wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. Ep. v. 8-14. Do all things without murmurings and disputings, that ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights. Phi. ii. 14, 15. Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day, We are not of the night or of darkness. 1 The. v. 5. The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks; the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches. Re. i. 20. Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write, These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven candlesticks. Re. ii. 1.

A city that is set on an hill, &c.] Let us build us a city (said the inhabitants of the earth, being of one language,) and a tower whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. Let us go down (said the Lord), and there confound their

The night is far spent, the day is abroad from thence upon the face of all the at hand. Let us, therefore, cast off the works earth, and they left off to build the city. of darkness, and let us put on the armour of Ge. xi. 4-8. The wall of the city (the new light; let us walk honestly as in the day, not Jerusalem) had twelve foundations, and in in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering them the names of the twelve apostles of the and wantonness, not in strife and envying; Lamb. And I saw no temple therein; for but put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the temple of it. And the city had no need of the lusts thereof. Ro. xiii. 11-14. Ye were sun, neither of the moon to shine in it, for the sometimes darkness; but now are ye light in glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the Lord. Walk as children of light. Re. xxi. have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain. 14. 22-25. 27. Ph. ii. 16. Ye know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you, that ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory. 1 The. ii. 11, 12. Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober; for they that sleep, sleep in the night, and they that be drunken are drunken in the night; but let us who are of the day be sober; putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and for an helmet the hope of salvation. 1 Th. v. 6-8. Ye are a chosen generation (as Christians), a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light. 1 Pe. ii. 9. This then is the message which we have heard of "him" (“ Jesus"), and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth; but if we walk in the light as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. John i. 5—7.

15 Do men light a candle, &c.] Is a candle brought to be put under a bushel, or under a bed? and not to be set on a candlestick? Mar. iv. 21. No man when he hath lighted a candle (saith Jesus) covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it under a bed, but setteth it on a candlestick, that they which enter in may see the light. Lu. viii. 16. The light of the body is the eye, therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness. Lu. xi. 34.

It giveth light unto all, &c.] Thou shalt make the seven lamps "thereof" (" of the tabernacle"), and they shall light the lamps thereof, that they may give light over against it.

Ex. xxv. 37. Speak unto Aaron (said the Lord to Moses), and say unto him, When thou lightest the lamps, the seven lamps shall give light over against the candlestick. Nu. viii. 2.

16 Your light so shine, &c.] The path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day. Pr. iv. 18. Then (in the performance of a true fast) shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily, and thy righteousness shall go before thee. The glory of the Lord shall be thy rere-ward. Is. lviii. 8. Arise, shine, for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee; for behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people; but the Lord shall arise upon "thee" ("the Church of Christ"), and his glory shall be seen upon thee; and the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising. Is. lx. 1-3. Now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for

That they may see your good works, &c.] Take heed that ye do not your alms before men; and when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues, and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Moreover, when ye fast, be not as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance; for they disfigure their faces that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. Mat. vi. 1. 5. 16. All their works "they" ("the Pharisees") do for to be seen of men. Mat. xxiii. 5. This wo

man (Dorcas, or Tabitha, of Joppa) was full of good works, and alms-deeds which she did. Ac. ix. 36. We are his (God's) workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. Ep. ii. 10. I will that women adorn themselves with good works. 1 Ti. ii. 10. Let a widow be well reported for good works; if she have relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work. Likewise also the good works of some are manifested beforehand; and they that are otherwise cannot be hid. 1 Ti. v. 10. 25. Charge them that are rich, that they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate. 1 Ti. vi. 18. Young men likewise exhort to be soberminded in all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works. (Christ) gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. Tit. ii. 6, 7. 14. Put them in mind to be ready to every good work; that being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works: and let ours also learn to maintain good works for necessary uses, that they be not unfruitful. Tit. iii. 1. 7, 8. 14. Let us consider one another, to provoke unto love and to good works. He. x. 24. Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles; that whereas they speak against you as evil doers, they may, by your good works which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation. 1 Pe. ii. 12. Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; having a good conscience, that whereas they speak evil of you, as of evil doers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ. 1 Pe. iii. 1. 16.

And glorify your Father.] The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, to appoint unto them that mourn in Zion; that they might be called Trees of righteousness, the Planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified. Is. Ixi. 3. Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples. John xv. 8. Thus are the secrets of his heart (of one that believeth not) made manifest; and so falling down on his face, he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth. 1 Co. xiv. 25. By the experiment of this administration (the ministering seed to the sower), they glorify God for your professed subjection unto the gospel of Christ, and for your liberal distribution unto them, and unto all men. 2 Co. ix. 13. And they (which heard that he which persecuted us in times past, now preacheth the faith which once he destroyed) glorified God in me.

Ga. i. 24. He shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day. Wherefore also we pray always for you, that your God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of faith with power: that the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and ye in him, according to the grace of our God, and the Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Th. i. 10, 11, 12. Dearly beloved, I beseech you, as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul; having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that whereas they speak against you as evil doers, they may, by your good works which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation. 1 Pe. ii. 11, 12. If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God: if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ; to whom be praise and dominion for ever. Amen. Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: but rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding great joy. If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye: for the Spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified. 1 Pe. iv. 11—14.

Your Father which is in heaven.] See verse 45. After this manner pray ye (said Jesus): Our Father which art in heaven, &c. &c. Mat. vi. 9. Call no man your father upon the earth for one is your father, which is in heaven. Mat. xxiii. 9. When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, &c. &c. L. xi. 2.

17 To destroy the law.] It is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the law to fail. Lu. xvi. 17. Moses in the law commanded us, that "such" (“those taken in adultery") should be stoned: but what sayest thou (said the Scribes to Jesus)? John viii. 5. And (the Pharisees) set up false witnesses (against Stephen), which said, This man ceaseth not to speak blasphemous words against this holy place, and the law. Ac. vi. 13. This fellow (said the Jews of Paul) persuadeth men to worship God contrary to the law. Ac. xviii. 13. Men of Israel (cried the Jews of Asia) help; this is “the man” (“Paul”) that teacheth all men every where against the people, and the law, and this place. Ac. xxi. 28. Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law. iii. 31. Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.

am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, 18

Ro. x. 4. This I say, That the covenant that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law which was four hundred and thirty years after cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect: for if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise; wherefore then serveth the law? it was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a Mediator. Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law. The law was our schoolmaster, to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 17-24. See xv. 4. and iv. 10.

But to fulfil.] It becometh us (said Jesus to John) to fulfil all righteousness. Mat. iii. 15. Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened: burntoffering and sin-offering hast thou not required. Then said I, Lo I come in the volume of the book it is written of me: I delight to do thy will, O my God; yea, thy law is within my heart. Ps. xl. 6, 7, 8. The Lord is well pleased for his righteousness' sake, he will magnify the law, and make it honourable. Is. xlii. 21. God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and før sin, condemned sin in the flesh; that the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the spirit. Ro. viii. 3, 4. When the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, to redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. iv. 4, 5. Let no man therefore judge you in meat or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath-days: which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ. Col. ii. 16, 17. In those sacrifices (under the law) there is a remembrance again made of sins every year: for it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins: wherefore, when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared for me. In burntofferings, and sacrifices for sin thou hast no pleasure. Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me) to do thy will, O God. Every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins: but this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins, for ever sat down on the right hand of God. He. x. 3-12.

18 Verily I say unto you.] See verse 26. Verily I say unto you, They (the Pharisees, hypocrites) have their reward. Mat. vi. 2. 16.

Verily I say unto you (said Jesus of the centurion, whose servant he healed), I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. Mat. viii. 10. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment than for that city (which received not Christ's disciples). Verily I say unto you (said Jesus to his disciples), Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come. Verily I say unto you, "He" ("who shall give a cup of cold water unto one of Christ's disciples") shall in no wise lose his reward. Mat. x. 15. 23. 42. Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not arisen a greater than John the Baptist. Mat. xi. 11. Verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye (Christ's disciples) see, and have not seen them. Mat. xiii. 17. Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom. Mat. xvi. 28. Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove. Mat. xvii. 20. Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Verily I say unto you (saith Christ to his disciples), Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Mat. xviii. 3. 18. Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven. Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me in the regeneration, when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. Mat. xix. 23. 28. Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig-tree (which withered away), but also, if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea, it shall be done. Verily I say unto you, That the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you. Mat. xxi. 21. 31. Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation (for shedding the blood of the prophets). Mat. xxiii. 36. Verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down. Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled. Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him (the faithful servant) ruler over all his goods. Mat. xxiv. 2. 34. 47. Verily I say unto you, I know you not (said the Lord to the foolish virgins). Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it (an

act of charity) unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. Mat. xxv. 12. 40. 45. Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this woman (who anointed Jesus' feet) hath done, be told for a memorial of her. Mat. xxvi. 13. Verily I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme: but he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation. Mar. iii. 28. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city (which should not receive Christ's disciples). Mar. vi. 11. Verily I say unto you, There shall no sign be given unto this generation. Mar. viii. 12. Verily I say unto you, That there be some of them that stand here which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power. Verily I say unto you, He (who gives a cup of cold water to a disciple) shall not lose his reward. Mar. ix. 1. 41. Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein. Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the Gospel's, but he shall receive an hundred fold in this time, and in the world to come, eternal life. Mar. x. 15. 29. Verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass, he shall have whatsoever he saith. Mar. xi. 23. Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in (to the treasury) than all they which have cast into the treasury. Mar. xii. 43. Verily I say unto you, That this generation shall not pass till all these things be done. Mar. xiii. 30. Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this Gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done (who anointed Jesus' fect) shall be spoken of for a memorial of her. Verily I say unto you (his disciples), One of you (which eateth with me) shall betray me. Verily I say unto you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God. Verily I say unto thee (Peter), That this day, even this night, before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice. Mar. xiv. 9. 18. 25. 30. Verily I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country. Lu. iv. 24. Verily I say unto you,“ It" (“the blood of all the prophets") shall be required of this generation. Lu. xi. 51. Lu. xviii. 29. Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away till all be fulfilled. Lu. xxi. 32. Verily I say unto thee (the thief on the cross), To day shalt thou be with Ime in Paradise. Lu. xxiii. 43. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man. i. 51. Verily, verily, I say unto thee (said Jesus to Nicodemus), Except a man be born again he cannot see the kingdom of God. Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water, and of the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witnesses. John. iii. 3. 5. II. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from hea ven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.
