me for I am weak; my soul is also sore vexed; I am weary with my groaning; mine eye is consumed because of grief. The Lord hath heard my supplication; the Lord will receive my prayer. Let all mine enemies be ashamed; let them return and be ashamed suddenly. Ps. vi. 1, 2, 3. 6, 7. 9, 10. How long wilt thou forget me, O Lord? for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me? how long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily? But I have trusted in thy mercy; my heart shall rejoice in thy salvation. Ps. xiii. 1, 2. 5. Lord, thou didst hide thy face, and I was troubled. I cried to thee, O Lord, and unto the Lord I made supplication. Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing; thou hast put off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness. Ps. xxx. 7, 8. 11. When I kept silence, my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long; for day and night thy hand was heavy upon me: I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. Thou art my hiding-place: thou shalt preserve me from trouble thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. Ps. xxxii. 3, 4, 5. 7. I waited patiently for the Lord, and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry; he brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established by goings; and he hath put a new song into my mouth, even praise unto our God. Ps. xl. 1, 2, 3. But I am poor and sorrowful; let thy salvation, O God, set me up on high. I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving. Ps. lxix. 29, 30. The sorrows of death compassed me, and the pains of hell gat hold upon me; I found trouble and sorrow. Then called I upon the name of the Lord; O Lord, I beseech thee, deliver my soul. Behold, for peace I had great bitterness; but thou hast in love to my soul delivered it from the pit of corruption; for thou hast cast all my sins behind thy back. The living, the living, he shall praise thee as I do this day. Is. xxxviii. 14-19. I have seen his ways, and will heal "him" (“the penitent"), I will lead him also, and restore comforts unto him, and to his mourners. 18. lvii. 18. The Lord hath anointed me (saith the prophet respecting Christ), to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God, to appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them, beauty for ashes; the oil of joy for mourning; the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called Trees of righteousness, the Planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified. Is. lxi. 2, 3. Rejoice ye with Jerusalem, and be glad with her all ye that love her; rejoice for joy with her all ye that mourn for her. Is. lxvi. 10. He that scattered Israel will gather him, and keep him as a shepherd doth his flock; for the Lord hath redeemed Jacob, and ransomed him from the hand of him that was stronger than he. Therefore they shall come and sing in the height of Zion, and shall flow together to the goodness of the Lord. Refrain thy voice from weeping, and thine eyes from tears; for thy work shall be rewarded saith the Lord, and they shall come again from the land of the enemy. And there is hope in thine end saith the Lord, that thy children shall come again to their own border. Je. xxxi. 10. 12. 16, 17. Zec. xii. 10. In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, for sin and for uncleanness. Zec. xiii. 1. Blessed are ye that weep now, for ye shall laugh; woe unto you that are full, for ye shall hunger; woe unto you that laugh now, for ye shall mourn, and weep. Lu. vi. 21. 25. And behold, a woman, which was a sinner, stood at his (Jesus') feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head; and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment (which she had in an alabaster box). And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace. Lu. vii. 38. 50. Remember (said Abraham in the parable to the rich man), that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. Lu. xvi. 25. Verily, verily, I say unto you, That "ye" (" Christ's disciples") shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice; and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy: ye now therefore have sorrow; but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you. John xvi. 20. 22. Blessed be God, who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance, for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing. Re. vii. 14-17. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes, and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. 6 Are they which do hunger.] As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God? Ps. xlii. 1, 2. O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is; to see thy power and thy glory, so as I have seen thee in the sanctuary. Is. xlix. 9, 10. Ho! every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters; and he that hath no money, come ye buy and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk, without money, and without price. 7 Are the merciful.] If ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you; but if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. Mat. vi. 14, 15. Shouldst not thou also (said the Lord to his servant in the parable) have had compassion on thy fellow servant, even as I had pity on thee? And his Lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him. So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses. Mat. xviii. 33-35. With the merciful thou wilt shew thyself merciful, and with the upright man thou wilt shew thyself upright. 2 Sa. xxii. 26. If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail, or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof, (for from my youth he was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided "her" ("the widow") from my mother's womb); if I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering; if his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep; if I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless when I saw my help in the gate: then let mine arm fall from my shoulder blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone. To loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke? Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him? and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh? Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily; and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the Lord shall be thy rere-ward. Then shalt thou call, and the Lord shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am. Is. lviii. 6-9. For they shall obtain mercy.] I will no more have mercy upon the house of Israel, but I will utterly take them away. Ho. i. 6. Say ye unto your brethren "Ammi" (i. e. 'my people"), and to your sisters "Ruhamah" (i. e. "having obtained mercy"), I will have mercy upon her that had not obtained mercy, and I will say to them which were not my people, Thou art my people, and they shall say, Thou art my God. Ho. ii. 1. 23. As ye (Gentiles) in times past have not believed God, yet have now obtained mercy through their (the Jews') unbelief. Ro. xi. 39. Now concerning virgins, I have no commandment of the Lord, yet I give my judgment as one that had obtained mercy of the Lord to be faithful. 1 Co. vii. 25. Seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy we faint not but have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty. 2 Co. iv. 1, 2. I (said Paul) obtained mercy (in being a persecutor, &c.), because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. How beit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all long-suffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life ever

lasting. 1 Ti. i. 13. 16. The Lord give mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus; for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain: the Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the Lord in that day. 2 Ti. i. 16. 18. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. He. iv. 16. 8 Are the pure.] Woe unto you Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup, and of the platter; but within they are full of extortion and excess. Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. Woe unto you Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.

Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity. Mat. xxiii. 25-28. I know, my God, that thou triest the heart, and hast pleasure in uprightness. As for me, in the uprightness of mine heart I have willingly offered all these things (his offerings to the house of God). O Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, our fathers, keep this for ever in the imagination of the thoughts of the heart of thy people, and prepare their heart unto thee. And give unto Solomon my son (said David) a perfect heart, to keep thy commandments, thy testimonies, and thy statutes, and to do all these things, &c. 1 Ch. xxix. 17, 18, 19. He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart (shall abide in thy tabernacle). Ps. xv. 2. With the pure thou wilt shew thyself pure. Ps. xviii. 26. He that hath clean hands and a pure heart shall receive the blessing from the Lord. Ps. xxiv. 4, 5. Truly God is good to Israel, even to such as are of a clean heart. Ps. lxxiii. 1. He that loveth pureness of heart, for the grace of his lips the king shall be his friend. Pr. xxii. 11. Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean; from all your filthiness, and from all your idols will I cleanse you. A new heart will I also give you (saith the Lord to Israel), and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh; and I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them. Ez. xxxvi. 25, 26, 27. And (God) put no difference between us and them, purifying their (the Gentiles') hearts by faith. Ac. xv. 9. Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. 2 Co. vii. 1. Unto the pure all things are pure; but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure, but even their mind and conscience is defiled. Tit. i. 15. If the blood of bulls and of goats sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your consciences from dead works to serve the living God?
