And

He hath spoken blasphemy.] And behold, ertain of the Scribes said within themselves, his man blasphemeth. Mat. ix. 3. et two men, sons of Belial (said the letters of ezebel), before him (Naboth), to bear witness gainst him, saying, Thou didst blaspheme od and the king: and then carry him out, nd stone him, that he may die. And the men his city, even the elders and the nobles ho were the inhabitants in his city, did as zebel had sent unto them, and as it was ritten in the letters which she had sent to them. They proclaimed a fast, and set aboth on high among the people. And ere came in two men, children of Belial, and t before him: and the men of Belial witssed against him, even against Naboth, in e presence of the people, saying, Naboth 1 blaspheme God and the king. 1 Ki. xxi. -13. And the Scribes and the Pharisees gan to reason, saying, Who is this which aketh blasphemies? who can forgive sins t God? Lu. v. 21. 67 Did they spit in his face.] spit upon him, and took the reed and smote him on the head. Mat. xxvii. 30. And the Lord said unto Moses, If her (Miriam's) father had spit in her face, should she not be ashamed seven days? Let her be shut out from the camp (as leprous) seven days? And after that let her be received in again. Nu. xii. 14. Then shall his brother's wife come unto him (who refused to marry her) in the presence of the elders, and loose his shoe from off his foot, and spit in his face, and shall answer and say, So shall it be done unto that man that will not build up his brother's house. De. xxv. 9. And now am I their song? I am their bye-word (who were viler than the earth); they abhor me, they flee far from me, and spare not to spit in my face. Because he (the Lord) hath loosed my cord and afflicted me. They have also let loose the bridle before me. Job xxx. 9, 10, 11. His visage was so marred, more than any man; and his form more than the sons of men. Is. lii. 14. He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and we hid, as it were, our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Is. liii. 3.

19. Being defamed, we entreat; we are made as the filth of the world, and are the offscouring of all things unto this day. 1 Co. iv. 13. Let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. Buffeted him.] See chap. xxvii. 30.

And others smote him.] See chap. v. 39. Then Pashur (the son of Immer) smote Jeremiah the prophet, and put him in the stocks, that were in the high gate of Benjamin, which was by the house of the Lord. Je. xx. 2. He giveth his cheek to him that smiteth him; he is filled full with reproach. Thou hast made us as the offscouring and refuse in the midst of the people. Lam. iii. 30. 45. And the men that held Jesus mocked him and smote him. Lu. xxii. 63. And when "he" ("Jesus") had "thus" spoken ("in secret have I said nothing"), one of the officers which stood by, struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so?

John xviii. 22. And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe, and said, Hail, king of the Jews; and they smote him with their hands. John xix. 2, 3. And the high priest, Ananias, commanded them that stood by him to smite him on the mouth. Then said Paul unto him, God shall smite thee, thou whited wall: for sittest thou to judge me after the law, and commandest me to be smitten contrary to the law? Ac. xxiii. 2, 3. Ye suffer if a man bring you into bondage; if a man devour you; if a man take of you; if a man exalt himself; if a man smite you on the face. I speak as concerning reproach, as though we had been weak. Howbeit, whereinsoever any is bold (I speak foolishly), I am bold also. 2 Co. xi. 20, 21.

The palms of their hands.] Now gather thyself in troops, O daughter of troops, he hath laid siege against us; they shall smite the judge of Israel with a rod upon the cheek. Mi. v. 1.

68 Prophesy unto us.] They that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads, and saying, Thou that destroyest the temple and buildest it in three days, save thyself; if thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross. Likewise also the chief priests, mocking him, with the Scribes and elders, said, He saved others, himself he cannot save: if he be the king of Israel let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. He trusted in God, let him deliver him now, if he will have him; for he said, I am the Son of God. The thieves also which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth. Mat.

xxvii. 39-44. And they (Joseph's brethren) said one to another, Behold, this dreamer cometh! Come now, therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into some pit, and we will say, some evil beast hath devoured him: and we shall see what will become of his dreams. Ge. xxxvii. 19, 20. And it came to pass, when their hearts (the hearts of the Philistines) were merry, that they said, Call for Samson, that he may make us sport. And they called for Samson out of the prison-house, and he made them sport. Ju. xvi. 25. Thou Christ.] Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe; and when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head. and a reed in his right hand; and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, king of the Jews. Mat. xxv 28, 29. And they clothed him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his head, and began to salute him, Hail, king of the Jews. And they smote him on the head with a reed, and did spit upon him, and bowing their knees, worshipped him. Mr. xv. 17, 18, 19. And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe, and said, Hail, king of the Jews! And they store him with their hands. And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour; and he (Pilate) saith unto the Jews, Behold your king! But they cried out, Away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your king? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Cesar. Ja xix. 2, 3. 14, 15. As new-born babes desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby; if so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious, to whom coming as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God and precious. Ye also, as lively stones are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sen fices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. Wherefore also it is contained in the Scrip ture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corser stone, elect, precious, and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. Unto you therefore which believe he is precious; but unto them which be obedient, the stone

Who is he that smote thee? Now Peter sat without in the palace: 69 and a damsel came unto him, saying, Thou also wast with Jesus of Galilee. But he denied before them all, saying, I know not 70 what thou sayest. And when he was gone out into the porch, 71

which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner; and a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient, whereunto also they were appointed. 1 Pe. ii. 4-8.

69 Peter sat without, &c.] See verse 58. And he (Elijah) came thither unto a cave (being threatened by Jezebel), and lodged there, and behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah? And it was so, when Elijah heard "it" ("the_still small voice"), that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave; and behold, there came a voice unto him and said, What doest thou here, Elijah? 1 Ki. xix. 9. 13. Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. Ps. i. 1. And as Peter was beneath in the palace, there cometh one of the maids of the high priest. And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked upon him, and said, And thou also wast with Jesus of Nazareth. But he denied, saying, I know not, neither understand I what thou sayest; and he went out into the porch, and the cock crew. Mar. xiv. 66, 67, 68. And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall, and were set down together, Peter sat down among them. But a certain maid beheld him as he sat by the fire, and earnestly looked upon him, and said, This man was also with him. And he denied him, saying, Woman, I know him not. Lu. xxii. 55, 56, 57. Peter stood at the door without; then went out that other disciple which was known unto the high priest, and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter. Then saith the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Art not thou also one of this man's disciples? He saith, I am not. And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. They said therefore unto him, Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said, I am not. Did not I see thee in the garden with him (said one of the servants of the high priest)? Peter then denied again, and immediately the cock crew. John xviii. 16, 17. 25, 26, 27. And (God) delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked (for that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds). The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished. 2 Pe. ii. 7, 8, 9. Jesus of Galilee.] See verse 71. But when VOL. II.

"he" ("Joseph") heard that Archelaus did reign in Judea in the room of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither: notwithstanding, being warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee. And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene. Mat. ii. 22, 23. And the multitude said (as Jesus entered into Jerusalem upon an ass), This is Jesus, the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee. Mat. xxi. 11. And Nathanael said unto "him" (" Philip"), Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see. John i. 46. Others said, This is Christ! But some said, Shall Christ come out of Galilee? Art thou also of Galilee (said the rulers to Nicodemus)? search and look; for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet. John vii. 41. 52. After "this man" ("Theudas") rose up Judas of Galilee, in the days of the taxing (said Gamaliel to the Pharisees), and drew much people after him he also perished (as Theudas), and all, even as many as obeyed him, were dispersed. Ac. v. 37.

Uphold me according to thy word, that I may live, and let me not be ashamed of my hope! Hold thou me up, and I shall be safe; and I will have respect unto thy statutes continually. Ps. cxix. 115, 116, 117. Better is the poor that walketh in his uprightness, than he that is perverse in his ways, though he be rich. Pr. xxviii. 6. A man's pride shall bring him low, but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit. The fear of man bringeth a snare, but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe. xxix. 23. 25. Of whom hast thou been afraid, or feared (said the Lord to the Jews), that thou hast lied, and hast not remembered me, nor laid it to thy heart? Have not I held my peace even of old, and thou fearest me not? Is. lvii. 11. The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? Je. xvii. 9. Be not high minded, but fear. Ro. xi. 20. Let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall. 1 Co. x. 12. But the fearful and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone; which is the second death. Re. xxi. 8.

72 With an oath.] Swear not at all, neither by heaven, for it is God's throne: nor by the earth, for it is his footstool. Mat. v. 34. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. Ex. xx. 7. Hear ye this, O house of Jacob, which are called by the name of Israel, and are come forth out of the waters of Judah; which swear by the name of the Lord, and make mention of the God of Israel: but not in truth nor in righteousness. Is. xlviii. 1. Then said he (the Lord) unto me (when I saw the flying roll), This is the curse that goeth over the face of the whole earth; for every one that stealeth shall be cut off as on this side, according to it; and every one that sweareth shall be cut off as on that side, according to it. I will bring it forth, saith the Lord of hosts, and it shall enter into the house of the thief, and into the house of him that sweareth falsely by my name; and it shall remain in the midst of his house, and shall consume it, with the timber thereof, and the stones thereof. Zec. v. 3, 4. Let none of you imagine evil in your hearts against his neighbour, and love no false oath; for all these are things that I hate, saith the Lord. Zec. viii. 17. Mal. iii. 5. Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thy heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? Whiles it remained was it not thine own? and after it was sold was it not in thine own power? Why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God. Ac. v. 3, 4.

I do not know the man.] See verse 74. I tell thee, Peter (said Jesus), the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me. Lu. xxii. 34.

Let me go over, that the men of Gilead said unto him, Art thou an Ephraimite? If he said, Nay, then said they unto him, Say now Shibboleth. Saying, I know not the man.] Fear not them which kill the body (said Jesus), but are not able to kill the soul; but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Whosoever shall confess me before men, him will confess before my Father which is in heaven; but whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven. Mat. x. 28. 32, 33. So, when they (Jesus and his disciples) had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs. He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep. He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things, thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my streep. John xxi. 15, 16, 17. As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent. Re. iii. 19.

And immediately the cock crew.] Verily I say unto thee (said Jesus to Peter), That this day, even in this night, before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice. I know not, neither understand I what thou sayest (said Peter, immediately after, to the maid of the high priest); and he went out into the porch, and the cock crew; (and) he began to curse and to swear, saying, I know not this man of whom ye speak. Mar. xiv. 30. 68. 72. Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest; and immediately, while he yet spake, the cock crew. Lu. xxii. 60. Peter then denied again (the third time), and immediately the cock crew. John xviii. 27. 75 Remembered the word of Jesus.] See verse 34. And the Lord turned and looked

upon Peter; and Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And Peter went out and wept bitterly. Lu. xxii. 61, 62. Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake (said Jesus to Peter)? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow till thou hast denied me thrice. John xiii. 38.

And he went out, and wept bitterly.] Then Judas which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? See thou to that. And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself. Mat. xxvii. 3, 4, 5. And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: but I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not; and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren. And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee both into prison, and to death. And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me. Lu. xxii. 31-34. I know (said Paul) that in me (that is, in my flesh) dwelleth no good thing; for to will is present with me, but how to perform that which is good I find not. For the good that I would, I do not; but the evil which I would not, that I do. Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. Ro. vii. 18, 19, 20. For who maketh thee to differ from another, and what hast thou that thou didst not receive? Now if thou didst receive it, why dost thou glory, as if thou hadst not received it? 1 Co. iv. 7. Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual restore such an one in the spirit of meekness: considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Ga. vi. 1. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation, ready to be revealed in the last time. 1 Pe. i. 3, 4, 5.
