for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink. Ps. lxix. 1-21. The Lord God hath opened mine ear, and I was not rebellious, neither turned away back. I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting. Is. 1. 5, 6. Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed? For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form or comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath aid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he pened not his mouth; he is brought as a amb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before 1er shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his nouth. He was taken from prison and from udgment: and who shall declare his generaion? for he was cut off out of the land of the ¿iving: for the transgression of my people was Me stricken. And he made his grave with the vicked, and with the rich in his death; beause he had done no violence, neither was

my deceit in his mouth. Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: vhen thou shalt make his soul an offering for in, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his lays, and the pleasure of the Lord shall proser in his hand. He shall see of the travail f his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his Knowledge shall my righteous servant justify nany; for he shall bear their iniquities. Therefore will I divide him a portion with the reat, and he shall divide the spoil with the trong; because he hath poured out his soul nto death: and he was numbered with the ransgressors: and he bare the sin of many, nd made intercession for the transgressors. s. liii. throughout. And after threescore and wo weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for imself; and the people of the prince that shall ɔme shall destroy the city, and the sanciary; and the end thereof shall be with a ood, and unto the end of the war desolations re determined. Da. ix. 26. And I will our upon the house of David, and upon the habitants of Jerusalem the spirit of grace, and f supplications: and they shall look upon me hom they have pierced, and they shall tourn for him, as one mourneth for his only m; and shall be in bitterness for him, as

one that is in bitterness for his first-born. Zec. xii. 10. Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the Lord of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered; and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones. Zec. xiii. 7. It is written of the Son of man, that he must suffer many things, and be set at nought. Mar. ix. 12. O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken. Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer. Lu. xxiv. 25, 26. 46. "They" ("the soldiers") said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend "it" (“Jesus' coat "), but cast lots for it whose it shall be. That the Scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my garments among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things (that they brake not Jesus' legs) were done, that the Scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken. And again another Scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced. John xix. 24. 28. 36, 37. Men and brethren, children of the stock of Abraham, and whosoever among you feareth God, to you is the word of this salvation sent. For they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath-day, they have fulfilled them in condemning him. And though they found no cause of death in him, yet desired they Pilate that he should be slain. And when they had fulfilled all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree, and laid him in a sepulchre. Ac. xiii. 26-29. Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath-days reasoned with them out of the Scriptures; opening and alleging that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus whom I preach unto you is Christ. Ac. xvii. 1, 2, 3. Having, therefore, obtained help of God, I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come, that Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should shew light unto the people, and to the Gentiles. Ac. xxvi. 22, 23. And when they (the Jews at Rome) had appointed "him” (“ Paul”) a day, there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening. Ac. xxviii. 23. I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures. 1 Co. xv. 3. Of which salvation the prophets have inquired and, searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you; searching what, or what manner of

unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been 25 good for that man if he had not been born. Then Judas, which betrayed him, answered and said, Master, is it I? He said unto 26 him, Thou hast said. And as they were eating, Jesus took

time, the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow. 1 Pe. i. 10, 11. Written of him.] And truly the Son of man goeth as it was determined; but woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed. Lu. xxii. 22. Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain. Ac. ii. 23. Of a truth, against thy holy child Jesus whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Chirst, for to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done. Ac. iv. 27, 28.

But woe unto that man, &c.] Woe unto the world because of offences, for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh. Mat. xviii. 7. Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us; see thou to that. And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself. Mat. xxvii. 3, 4, 5. Let death seize upon them, and let them go down quick into hell; for wickedness is in their dwellings, and among them. But thou, O God, shalt bring them down into the pit of destruction; bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days. Ps. lv. 15. 23. Set thou a wicked man over "him" ("David's enemy"), and let Satan stand at his right hand. When he shall be judged, let him be condemned: and let his prayer become sin. Let his days be few; and let another take his office. Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow. Let his children be continually vagabonds, and beg: let them seek their bread also out of their desolate places. Let the extortioner catch all that he hath; and let the stranger spoil his labour. Let there be none to extend mercy unto him: neither let there be any to favour his fatherless children. Let his posterity be cut off; and in the generation following let their name be blotted out. Let the iniquity of his fathers

be remembered with the Lord; and let not the sin of his mother be blotted out. Let them be before the Lord continually, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth. Because that he remembered not to shew mercy, but persecuted the poor and

needy man, that he might even slay the broken of heart. As he loved cursing, so let it come unto him. As he delighted not in blessing, so let it be far from him. As he clothed himself with cursing like as with his garment, so let it come into his bowels like water, and like oil into his bones. Let it be unto him as the garment which covereth him, and for a girdle wherewith he is girded conti nually. Let this be the reward of mine adversaries from the Lord, and of them that speak evil against my soul. But do thou for me, O God the Lord, for thy name's sake because thy mercy is good, deliver thou me. Ps. cix. 6-21. Woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed; good were it for that man if he had never been born. Mar. xiv. 21. While I was with them in the world (said Jesus of his disciples), I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. John xvii. 12. Men and brethren (said Peter after Christ's ascension), this Scripture must needs have been fulfilled which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus; for he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry. Now this maa purchased a field with the reward of iniquity, and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out. And it was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem, insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue, Aceldama, that is to say, field of blood. For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein; and his bishoprick let another take. Ac. i. 16-20.

25 Judas, which betrayed him.] But he (Gehazi) went in, and stood before his master and Elisha said unto him, Whence coment thou, Gehazi? and he said, Thy servant went no whither. 2 Ki. v. 25. Such is the way of the adulterous woman; she eateth, and wipeth her mouth, and saith, I have done no wickedness. Pr. xxx. 20.

Thou hast said.] See verse 64. And Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the king of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest Mat. xxvii. 11. Art thou a king then (said Pilate)? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king; to this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. John xviii. 37.

26 As they were eating.] And as they did cal Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake s and gave to them, and said, Take, eat; this

bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. And he took the cup, and 27 gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it;

is my body. Mar. xiv. 22. And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you; this do in remembrance of me. La. xxij. 19.

Jesus took bread.] And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them. Lu. xxiv. 30. For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you. That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat, this is my body which is broken for you; this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup when he had supped, saying, This cup is the New Testament in my blood. This do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come. 1 Co. xi. 23-26.

Blessed it.] And when he had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and brake the loaves, gave them to his disciples to set before them; and the two fishes divided he among them all. Mar. vi. 41.

and

And brake it.] And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness, and singleness of heart. Ac. ii. 46. And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow, and continued his speech until midnight. Ac. xx. 7. The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? for we being many, are one bread, and one body, for we are all partakers of that one bread. 1 Co. x. 16, 17.

Take, eat.] The bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world. Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread. And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life; he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life. He that eateth me, even he shall live by me. This is that bread which came down from heaven. Not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead; he that eateth of this bread shall live John vi. 33, 34, 35. 47. 57, 58. As often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.

for ever.

Wherefore, whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body. 1 Co. xi. 26-29.

This is my body.] Then take of " them" (the "prophet's hairs," under the type of which is shewed God's judgment upon Jerusalem) again, and cast them into the midst of the, fire, and burn them in the fire, for thereof shall a fire come forth into all the house of Israel. Thus saith the Lord God, This is Jerusalem; I have set it in the midst of the nations and countries, that are round about her. Ez. v. 4, 5. And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto, them, saying, This is my body. Lu. xxii. 19., Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers did eat the same spiritual meat; and did all drink the same spiritual drink (for they drank of that spiritual rock that followed them, and that rock was Christ). The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? the bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? 1 Co. x. 1. 4. 16. "Which things" ("the types of Agar and Sara") are an alle gory; for these are the two covenants, the one from the Mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar. For this Agar is Mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children. Ga. iv. 24, 25.

27 He took the cup.] And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank of it. And he said unto them, This is my blood of the New Testament, which is shed for many. Mar. xiv. 23, 24. Likewise also (he took) the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the New Testament in my blood, which is shed for you. Lu. xxii. 20.

Drink ye all of it.] I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the Lord. Ps. cxvi. 13. Í (Christ) am come into my garden, my sister, my spouse (the church); I have gathered my myrrh with my spice: I have eaten my honeycomb with my honey; I have drunk my wine with my milk. Eat, O friends: drink, yea, drink abundantly, O beloved. Ca. v. 1. The roof of thy mouth (said Christ to his church, shall be) like the best wine for my beloved, that goeth down sweetly, causing the lips of those

that are asleep to speak. Ca. vii. 9. And in this mountain shall the Lord of hosts make unto all people a feast of fat things, a feast of wines on the lees, of fat things full of marrow, of wines on the lees well refined. Is. xxv. 6. Ho! every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters; and he that hath no money, come ye, buy and eat: yea, come buy wine and milk, without money and without price. Is. lv. 1. The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? 1 Co. x. 16. Let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread and drink of that cup. 1 Co. xi. 28.

28 My blood of the New Testament.] And Moses took half of the blood (of the oxen which were sacrificed as peace offerings), and put it in basons, and half of the blood he sprinkled on the altar. And he took the book of the covenant, and read in the audience of the people; and they said, All that the Lord hath said will we do, and be obedient. And Moses took the blood, and sprinkled it on the people, and said, Behold, the blood of the covenant which the Lord hath made with you concerning all these words. Ex. xxiv. 6, 7, 8. The life of the flesh is in the blood; and I have given it to you upon the altar, to make an atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul. Le. xvii. 11. Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah. Je. xxxi. 31. As for thee also (daughter of Zion, saith the Lord), by the blood of thy covenant I have sent forth thy prisoners out of the pit wherein is no water. Zec. ix. 11. This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many. Mar. xiv. 24. This cup is the new testament in my blood which is shed for you. Lu. xxii. 20. This cup is the new testament in my blood. 1 Co. xi. 25. How much more (than by the blood of calves and of goats) shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance: for where a testament is, there must also, of necessity, be the death of the testator. For a testament is of force after men are dead; otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth; whereupon neither the first testament was dedicated without blood; for when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both

the book and all the people, saying, This i the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you. Moreover, he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry. And almost all things are by the law purged with blood, and without shedding of blood is no remission. He. ix. 14-22. In burnt offerings, and sacrifices for sin, thou hast had no pleasure. Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me) to do thy will, O God. Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin, thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law; then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second. By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ, once for all. And every priest standeth daily ministering, and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins but this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins, for ever sat down on the right hand of God; from henceforth expecting ti his enemies be made his footstool. For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified. He. x. 6-14. Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant make you perfect in every good work to do his will. He. xiii. 20.

Shed for many.] The Son of man cant not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. Mat. xx. 28. But not as the offence, so also is the free gift; for if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God. and the gift by grace which is by one ma Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many; as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one sha many be made righteous. Ro. v. 15. 19. la whom (Christ) we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins according to the riches of his grace. Ep. i. 7. la whom we have redemption through his blood even the forgiveness of sins. And (having made peace through the blood of his cross by him to reconcile all things unto himsel by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven. Cal. i. 14.00 Almost all things are by the law purged with blood, and without shedding of blood is remission. So Christ was once offered t bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation. He. ix. 22 28 And he is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. 1 John ii. 2. And (one of the elders) said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have vashed their robes, and made them white in he blood of the Lamb. Re. vii. 9. 14.

Bless the Lord, O my bul, who satisfieth thy mouth with good ings, so that thy youth is renewed like the agle's. Ps. ciii. 1. 5. They (the sinful Jews) all not drink wine with a song. With desire I have desired to eat this passer with you before I suffer; for I say unto u, I will not any more eat thereof until it ** fulfilled in the kingdom of God. Bring hither the fatted calf (said the father of the prodigal), and kill it, and let us eat and be merry; for this my son was dead and is alive again: he was lost and is found. And they began to be merry. Now his elder son was in the field, and as he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard musick and dancing. It was meet that we should make merry and be glad (said the father), for this thy brother was dead and is alive again; and was lost and is found. Lu. xv. 5, 6. 23, 24, 25. 32. These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full. John xv. 11. Ac. x. 40, 41. Let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. And when "he" (“ the Lamb") had taken the book (which was written within and on the back side), the four beasts, and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints. And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the (seven) seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood, out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation, and hast made us unto our God kings and priests, and we shall reign on the earth. Re. v. 8, 9, 10.
