woe unto you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in your14 selves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in. Woe unto you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows'

Pharisee); for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted. Lu. xviii. 14. God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. Ja. iv. 6. Likewise, ye younger submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility for God resisteth the proud and giveth grace to the humble. 1 Pe. v. 5.

13 Woe unto you, Scribes and Pharisees.] See verse 14, 15. 27. 29. Therefore the Lord will cut off from Israel head and tail, branch and rush in one day. The ancient and honourable, he is the head; and the prophet that teacheth lies, he is the tail. Is. ix. 14, 15. The sinners in Zion are afraid; fearfulness hath surprised the hypocrites. Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings? Is. xxx. 14. Woe to the idle shepherd that leaveth the flock! the sword shall be upon his arm and upon his right eye: his arm shall be clean dried up; and his right eye shall be utterly darkened. Ze. xi. 17. Woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over judgment and the love of God: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. Woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye love the uppermost seats in the synagogues, and greetings in the markets. Lu. xi. 42, 43.

For ye shut up the kingdom of heaven.] See chap. xxi. 31, 32. Woe unto you, lawyers! for ye have taken away the key of knowledge; ye entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered. Lu. xi. 52. Never man spake like this man (said the officers to the chief priests). Then answered them the Pharisees, Are ye also deceived? Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him? But this people who knoweth not the law are cursed. Nicodemus saith unto them (he that came to Jesus by night, being one of them), Doth our law judge any man before it hear him, and know what he doeth? They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet. And every man went unto his own house. vii. 46-53. The Jews had agreed already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue. Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise; we know that this man is a sinner. Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach

us ?

John

And they cast him out. John ix. 22, 24. 34. That "it" (" the doctrine of Christ")

spread no further among the people (said the council), let us straitly threaten them (dire apostles), that they speak henceforth to no man in this name. And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. dc. iv. 17, 18. Did not we straitly command you (said the high priest to the apostles) that ye should not teach in this name? And behold ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man's blood upon us. And when they had called the apostles and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. Ac. v. 28. 40. And Saul was consenting unto his (Stephen's) death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem. And they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judea, and Samaria, except the apostles. Ac. viii. 1. But Elymas the surcerer (for so is his name by interpretation), withstood "them" (" Barnabas and Saul”), seeking to turn away the deputy (Sergiss Paulus) from the faith. Ac. xiii. 8. also have suffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they have of the Jews: who both killed the Lord Jesus and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary to all mea: forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved, to fill up their sin alway, for the wrath is come upon them to the uttermost. 1 The. ii. 15, 16. Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth; men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith. 2 Ti. iii. 8. Alexander the coppersmith did me much evil; the Lord reward him according to his works; Of whom be thou ware also, for he hath greatly withstood our words. 2 Ti. iv. 14, 15, Sec xxvii. 1.

14 For ye devour widows' houses.] Ye shall not afflict any widow or fatherless child; If thou afflict them in any wise, and they cry at all unto me, I will surely hear their cry; And my wrath shall wax hot; and I will kill you with the sword, and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless. Er. xxii. 22, 23, 24. Thou hast sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken. Job xxii. 9. If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail, or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the fatherless have not eaten thereof: If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering; If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece

houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation. Woe unto you, Scribes and Pha- 15 risees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the

of my sheep; then let mine arm fall from my shoulder-blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone. Job xxxi. 16-20. 22. Beware of the Scribes, which devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayers; they shall receive greater damnation. Mar. xii. 40. Beware of the Scribes, which devour widows' houses, and for a shew make long prayers. The same shall receive greater damnation. Lu. xx. 47. Of this sort are they (having a form of godliness, but denying the power), which creep into **houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts. 2 Ti. iii. 6. There are many unruly and vain talkers, and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision; whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not for filthy lucre's sake. Ti. i. 10, 11. Spots"they" (the "false **_teachers") are; having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children: > which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray, following the way of Balaam, the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness. 2 Pe. ii. 14, 15.

Therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.] See verse 33. It shall be more tolerble for the land of Sodom in the day of judggiment than for thee (said Jesus to Capernaum). Mat. xi. 24. He that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more. Lu. xii. 48. My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation. Ja. iii. 1. And many shall follow their pernicious ways, by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of, and through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandize of you, whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not. 2 Pe. ii. 2, 3.

15 For ye compass sea and land.] Am I therefore become your enemy because I tell you the truth? They zealously affect you, but not well; yea, they would exclude you, that ye might affect them. Ga. iv. 16, 17. As many as desire to make a fair shew in the flesh, they constrain you to be circumcised; only lest they should suffer persecution for the cross of Christ. For neither they themselves who are circumcised keep the law; but desire to have you circumcised, that they may glory in your flesh. Ga. vi. 12, 13.

Proselyte.] In every province, and in every

city, whithersoever the king's commandment and his decree came, the Jews had joy and gladness, a feast and a good day. And many of the people of the land became Jews; for the fear of the Jews fell upon them. Es. viii. 17. How hear we (said the multitude on the day of Pentecost) every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, in Pontus, and Asia. Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Lybia about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and Proselytes, Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God. Ac. ii. 8-11. Now, when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas: who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God. Ac. xiii. 43.

Ye make him twofold more the child of hell.] Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. John viii. 44. O full of all subtilty, and all mischief, thou child of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord? Ac. xiii. 10. The unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles, and made their minds evil affected against the brethren. And there came thither (to Lystra) certain Jews from Antioch and Iconium, who persuaded the people, and, having stoned Paul, drew him out of the city, supposing he had been dead. Ac. xiv. 2. 19. The Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people. And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also. But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached of Paul at Berea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people. Ac. xvii. 5, 6. 13.

You hath he quickened who were dead in trespasses and sins. Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: among whom also we all had our conversation in times past, in the lusts of our flesh fulfilling the desires of 2 F

Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or 18 the temple that sanctifieth the gold? And, whosoever shall swear

by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift 19 that is upon it, he is guilty. Ye fools and blind: for whether is 20 greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift? Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things 21 thereon. And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, 22 and by him that dwelleth therein. And he that shall swear by

the flesh, and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. Ep. ii. 1, 2, 3.

16 Ye blind guides.] See verse 17. 19. 24. 26. Let them alone (said Jesus of the Scribes and Pharisees), they be blind leaders of the blind; and if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch. Mat. xv. 14. His watchmen are blind: they are all ignorant, they are all dumb dogs, they cannot bark; sleeping, lying down, loving to slumber. Yea, they are greedy dogs which can never have enough, and they are shepherds that cannot understand: they all look to their own way, every one for his gain from his quarter. Is. Ivi. 10, 11. For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind. And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also? Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind ye should have no sin but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth. John ix. 39, 40, 41.

Whosoever shall swear by the temple.] See chap. v. 33, 34. Above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath; but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation. Ja. v. 12.

It is nothing.] Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; and honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition. Mat. xv. 5, 6. Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death: but ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me, he shall be free. And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother: making the word of God of none effect through your tradition which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye. Mar. vii. 10—13.

He is a debtor.] I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law. Ga. v. 3.

17 Ye fools and blind.] Understand, ye brutish among the people; and, ye fools, when will ye be wise? Ps. xciv. 8.

Or the temple that sanctifieth the gold.] See verse 19. And thou shalt anoint the tabernacle of the congregation therewith (with the holy anointing oil), and the ark of the testimony, and the table and all his vessels, and the candlestick and his vessels, and the altar of incense, and the altar of burnt-offering, with all his vessels, and the laver and his foot. And thou shalt sanctify them, that they may be most holy; whatsoever toucheth them shall be holy. Ex. xxx. 26-29. The cen sers of these sinners (Korah, Dathan, and Abiram) against their own souls, let them make them (said Moses by the word of the Lord) broad plates for a covering of the altar; for they offered them before the Lord, therefore they are hallowed. And they shall be a sign unto the children of Israel. And Eleazar the priest took the brazen censers wherewith they that were burnt had offered: and they were made broad plates for a covering of the altar. Nu. xvi. 38-39.

19 Or the altar that sanctifieth, &c.] Seven days thou shalt make an atonement for the altar, and sanctify it; and it shall be an altar most holy, whatsoever toucheth the altar shall be holy. Ex. xxix. 37. Thou shalt sanctify them (the altar of burnt offering, &c.), that they may be most holy, whatsoever touchett them shall be holy. Ex. xxx. 29.

21 And by him that dwelleth therein.] I have surely built thee an house to dwell in (said Solomon), a settled place for thee to abide in for ever! But will God dwell on the earth? Behold, the heaven, and heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house that I have builded! I Ki. viii. 13. 27. I have built an house of habitation for thee, and a place for thy dwelling for ever. 2 Ch. vi. 2. And the priests could not enter into the house of the Lord, because the glory of the Lord had filled the Lord's house. 2 Ch. vii. 2. Lord, I have loved the habitation of thy house, and the place where thine honour dwelleth. xxvi. 8. For the Lord hath chosen Zion; he hath desired it for his habitation. This i

heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon. Woe unto you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for 23 ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. Ye 24 blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.

my rest for ever; here will I dwell, for I have desired it. Ps. cxxxii. 13, 14. Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner-stone: in whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit. Ep. ii. 19, 20. 22. For in "him" ("Christ ") dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. Col. ii. 9.

22 By the throne of God.] I say unto you swear not at all, neither by heaven for it is God's throne, &c. Mat. v. 34. The Lord is in his holy temple: the Lord's throne is in heaven. Ps. xi. 4. The heaven is my throne (saith the Lord), and the earth is my footstool where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest? Is. Ixvi. 1. Heaven is my throne (saith the prophet); and earth is my foot-stool: what house will ye build me saith the Lord, or what is the place of my rest? Ac. vii. 49. And immediately I was in the spirit; and behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne. And he that sat was to look upon like a jaspar, and a Sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald. Re. iv. 2, 3.

23 For ye pay tithe of mint, &c.] Woe unto you, Pharisees, for ye tithe mint and re, and all manner of herbs; and pass over judgment and the love of God: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. La. xi. 42.

The weightier matters of the law.] Go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy and not sacrifice, for I am not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance. Mat. ix. 13. If ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless. Mat. xii. 7. Thou shalt love the Lord thy God will all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind; this is the first and great commandment: and the second is like anto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. Mat. xxii. 37-40. And Samuel said, Hath the Lord as great delight in burnt-offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice; and to hearken than the fat of rams. 1 Sa. xv. 22. To do justice and judgment is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice. Pr. xxi. 3. Shalt

thou (the man that buildeth his house by unrighteousness) reign because thou closest thyself in cedar? Did not thy father eat and drink, and do judgment and justice, and then it was well with him? He judged the cause of the poor and needy, then it was well with him; was not this to know me? saith the Lord. Je. xxii. 15-16. I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt-offerings. Ho. vi. 6. He (the Lord) hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God? Mi. vi. 8. The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance, against such things there is no law. Ga. v. 22, 23.

These ought ye to have done.] Whosoever shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so; he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I say unto you, except your righteous ness shall exceed the righteousness of the Scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven. Mat. v. 19, 20.

24 Which strain at a gnat, &c.] Why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Mat. vii. 3. Why do thy disciples (said the Scribes and Pharisees to Jesus) transgress the tradition of the elders? For they wash not their hands when they eat bread. But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition? For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and thy mother, and he that curseth father or mother, let him die the death. But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father, or his mother, It is a gift by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me, and honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition. Mat. xv. 2-6. It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. Mat. xix. 24. And the chief priests took the silver pieces (which Judas had returned), and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood. And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers

unto you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full 26 of extortion and excess. Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that

which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may 27 be clean also. Woe unto you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of

in. Wherefore that field was called the field of blood unto this day. Mat. xxvii. 6, 7, 8. And the Scribes and Pharisees watched him (Jesus) whether he would heal on the sabbath-day, that they might find an accusation against him. But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man which had the withered hand, Rise up, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose and stood forth. Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing, Is it lawful on the sabbath-days to do good or to do evil? to save life or to destroy it? And looking round about upon them all, he said unto the man, Stretch forth thy hand: and he did so. And his hand was restored whole as the other. Lu. vi. 7-10. Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early, and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled, but that they might eat the passover. Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber. John xviii. 28. 40.

25 For ye make clean the outside, &c.] Out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies; these are the things which defile a man; but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man. Mat. xv. 19, 20. And when 66 they" ("the Pharisees") come from the market, except they wash they eat not. And many other things there be which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, brazen vessels, and of tables. Mar. vii. 3. Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness. Ye fools, did not he that made that which is without, make that which is within also? Lu. xi. 39, 40.

Full of extortion and excess.] They also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of the way: the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink; they are swallowed up of wine, they are out of the way through strong drink: they err in vision, they stumble in judgment, so that there is no place clean. Is. xxviii. 7, 8.

26 Cleanse first that which is within.] Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt; for the tree is known by his fruit. Mat. xii. 33. Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his

thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. Is Iv. 7. O Jerusalem, wash thine heart from wickedness, that thou mayest be saved: how long shall thy vain thoughts lodge within thee? Je. iv. 14. I have seen thine adulteries, and thine abominations on the hills in the fields. Woe unto thee, O Jerusalem! Wilt thou not be made clean? when shall it once be? Je. xiii. 27. Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed: and make you a new heart, and a new spirit; for why will ye die, house of Israel? Ez. xviii. 31. A good man, out of the good treasure of his heart, bringeth forth that which is good; and au evil man, out of the evil treasure of his heart, bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh. Lu. vi. 45. Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves frun all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. 2 Co. vii. 1. Let us draw near with a true heart, in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. He. x. 22. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you; cleanse your hands, ye sinners, and purity your hearts, ye double minded. Ja. iv. 8.

Is.

27 Like unto whited sepulchres.] Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my people their transgressions, and the house of Jacob their sins. Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways, as a nation that did righteousness, and forsook not the ordinance of their God. They ask of me the ordinances of justice, they take delight in approaching to God. 1, 2. Woe unto you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for ye are as graves which appear not, and the men that walk over them are test aware of them. Lu. xi. 44. Then (when the high priest, Ananias, commanded them that stood by to smile Paul on the mouth) said Paul unto him, God shall smite thee, thom whited wall! for sittest thou to judge me after the law, and commandest me to be smitten cuntrary to the law? Ac. xxiii. 3.

Sepulchres.] Whosoever toucheth one that is slain with a sword in the open fields, or a dead body, or a bone of a man, or a grave, shall be unclean seven days. N. xix. 16.
