them that were bidden to the wedding: and they would not come. Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are

clean spirits; and commanded them that they
should take nothing for their journey, save a
staff only : no scrip, no bread, no money in
their purse: but be shod with sandals; and
not put on two coats. And he said unto
them, In what place soever ye enter into an
house, there abide till ye depart from that
place. And whosoever shall not receive you,
nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off
the dust under your feet for a testimony against
them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more
tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of
Judgment than for that city. Mar. vi. 7—11.
Then he called his twelve disciples together,
and gave them power and authority over all
devils, and to cure diseases. And he sent
them to preach the kingdom of God, and to
heal the sick; and he said unto them, Take
nothing for your journey, neither staves, nor
scrip, neither bread, neither money; neither
have two coats a piece. And whatsover house
ye enter into, there abide, and thence depart.
And whosoever will not receive you, when ye
go out of that city, shake off the very dust
from your feet for a testimony against them.
And they departed, and went through the
towns, preaching the gospel, and healing
every where.
Ln. ix. 1-6. Blessed is he
that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God,
(said one that sat at meat with Jesus). Then
said he unto them, A certain man made
a great supper, and bade many: and sent
his servant at supper-time to say to them that
were bidden, Come, for all things are now
ready. Lu. xiv. 15, 16, 17. And the Spirit
and the bride say, Come. And let him that
heareth say, Come. And let him that is
athirst come. And whosoever will, let him
take the water of life freely. Re. xxii. 17.
That were bidden to the wedding.]
As
soon as ye be come into the city (said the
maidens of whom Saul and his servant enquired,
Is "the Seer" (" Samuel") here?) ye shall
straightway find him, before he go up to the
high place to eat; for the people will not eat
until he come, because he doth bless the
sacrifice; and afterwards they eat that be bid-
den. 1 Sa. ix. 13. Hold thy peace at the
presence of the Lord God; for the day of the
Lord is at hand; for the Lord hath prepared
a sacrifice, he hath bid his guests. Ze. i. 7.
And they would not come.] O Jerusalem,
Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and
stonest them which are sent to thee; how
often would I have gathered thy children to-
gether, even as a hen gathereth her chickens
under her wings, and ye would not. Mat.

Egypt: open thy mouth wide, and I will fill
it. But my people would not hearken to my
voice; and Israel would none of me. So I gave

them up unto their own hearts' lust; and they walked in their own counsels. Ps. 1xxxi. 10, 11, 12. Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded; but ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof : I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh; when your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you. Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me for that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the Lord: they would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof. Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices. For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them. Pr. i. 24-32. For thus saith the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength; and ye would not. Is. xxx. 15. Thus saith the Lord, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein. Also I set watchmen over you, saying, Hearken to the sound of the trumpet. But they said, We will not hearken. Je. vi. 16, 17. As they called them, so they went from them: they sacrificed unto Baalim, and burnt incense to graven images. And my people are bent to backsliding from me: though they called them to the most High, none at all would exalt him. Ho. xi. 2. 7. "He" (the "elder brother" of the prodigal son in the parable) was angry, and would not go in; therefore came his father out and entreated him. Lu. xv. 28. Those mine enemies (said the nobleman in the parable) which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither and slay them before me. Lu. xix. 27. Ye will not come to me (said Jesus) that ye might have life. John v. 40. When the Jews saw the multitudes (that came together to hear the word of God from the mouth of Paul and Barnabas), they were filled with envy, and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming. Ac. xiii. 45. To Israel, "He" ("the Lord") saith, All day long I have stretched forth my hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people. Ro. x. 21.

See that ye refuse not him that speaketh; for if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven. He. xii. 25. 4 Other servants.]

(having sent out the Apostles), the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place whither he himself would come (saying), He that heareth you heareth me; and he that despiseth you despiseth me; and he that despiseth me despiseth him that sent me. Lu. x. 1. 16. Thus it is written (said Jesus to the Apostles before his ascension), and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. Lu. xxiv. 46, 47. Ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you; and ye shall be witnesses unto me (said Jesus), both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. Ac. i. 8. Now they (the disciples) which were scattered abroad upon the persecution that arose about Stephen, travelled as far as Phenice, and Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word to none, but unto the Jews only. And some of them were men of Cyprus and Cyrene, which when they were come to Antioch, spake unto the Grecians, preaching the Lord Jesus. Ac. xi. 19, 20. Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles. For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth. Ac. xiii. 46, 47. After three days Paul called the chief of the Jews together and when they were come together, he said unto them, Men and brethren, though I have committed nothing against the people, or customs of our fathers, yet was I delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans. Ac. xxviii. 17.

Behold, I have prepared my dinner.] Wisdom hath builded her house; she hath hewn out her seven pillars; she hath killed her beasts; she hath mingled her wine; she hath also furnished her table. Pr. ix. 1, 2. Eat, O friends (saith Christ to his church), drink, yea, drink abundantly, O beloved. Can. v. 1. This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof and not die. I am the living bread (said Christ) which came down from heaven; if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever : and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat? Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I

say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me and I in him. As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father, so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me. John vi. 50-57. He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? Ro. viii. 32. Purge out the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. 1 Co. v. 7, 8.

And all things are ready.] See verse 8. "They" ("the Israelites") and our fathers refused to obey, neither were mindful of thy wonders that thou didst among them; but thou art a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and forsookest them not. Ne. ix. 17. Thon, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive, and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee. Ps. lxxxvi. 5. Come, for all things are now ready (said the servant at supper-time to them that were bidden). Lu. xiv. 17.

5 They made light of it.] And Lot went out and spake unto his sons-in-law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get ye out of "this place " (" Sodom"), for the Lord will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons-in-law. Ge. xix. 14. Thus Esau despised his birth-right. Ge xxv. 34. Yea, they despised the pleasant land; they believed not his word; but murmured in their tents; and hearkened not unto the voice of the Lord. Ps. cvi. 24, 25. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. Because I have called and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded: But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof. Pr. i. 7. 24, 25. Others (who witnessed the descent of fiery tongues, &c). mocking, said, These men are full of new wine. Ac. ii. 13. Go thy way for this time, said Felix to Paul, when I have a convenient season I will call for thee. Ac. xxiv. 25. Despisest thou the riches of his goodness, and forbearance, and long-suffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance? Ro. ii. 4. One to his farm.] See chap. xiii. 22. As in the days that were before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and knew not until the flood came and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. Mat. xxiv. 38, 39. And they all (that were bidden) with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto "him" (the servant that was sent to invite the guests), I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it; I pray thee have me excused. And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come. Lu. xiv. 18. 20. As it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man. They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all. Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded; but the same day that Lot went out of Sodom, it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed. In that day, he which shall be upon the housetop, and his stuff in the house, let him not L come down to take it away: and he that is in the field, let him likewise not return back. Remember Lot's wife. Lu. xvii. 26-32. To

be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Ro. viii. 6. In the last days perilous times shall come, for men shall be lovers of their ownselves; traitors, heady, high-minded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God. 2 Ti. iii. 1, 2. 4.

6 The remnant took his servants, &c.] See chap. v. 10, 11, 12; x. 12—18. 22-25; xxi. 35. 39. Behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and Scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city: that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel, unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar. Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation. Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his Lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep your's also. John xv. 19, 20. They shall put you out of the synagogues; yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service. And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me. John xvi. 2, 3. And "they" ("the priests and captain of the temple") laid hands on "them" ("Peter and John") and put them in hold unto the next day, for it was now even-tide. Ac. iv. 3. To "him" ("Gamaliel ") "they" (the "council") agreed; and when they had called the apostles, and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name. Ac. v. 40, 41. Ye stiffnecked, and uncircumcised in heart and ears (said Stephen), ye do always resist the Holy Ghost; as your fathers did, so do ye. Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted; and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One, of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers; who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it. When they heard these things they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth. But he being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God. Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears; and ran upon him with one accord. Ac. vii. 51-57. Ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of God, which in Judea are in Christ Jesus, for ye also have suffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they have of the Jews; who both killed the Lord Jesus and their own prophets, and have persecuted us: and they please not God, and are contrary to all men. 1 Th. ii. 14, 15. 7 He was wroth.] See chap. xxi. 40, 41. Those mine enemies (said the nobleman who left money with his servants), which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me. Lu. xix. 27. ii. 15, 16. The time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God; and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the Gospel of God? And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and sinner appear. 1 Pe. iv. 17, 18. His armies.] The Lord shall bring a nation against thee from far, from the end of the earth, as swift as the eagle flieth; a nation whose tongue thou shalt not understand. A nation of fierce countenance, which shall not regard the person of the old, nor shew favour to the young. And he shall eat the fruit of thy cattle, and the fruit of thy land, until thou be destroyed, &c. De. xxviii. 49, 50, 51. O Assyrian, the rod of mine anger, and the staff in their hand is mine indignation; I will send him against an hypocritical nation, and against the people of my wrath will I give him a charge-to take the spoil and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets. Howbeit, he meaneth not so, neither doth his heart think so; but it is in his heart to destroy and cut off nations not a few. Is. x. 5, 6, 7. Lift ye up a banner upon the high mountain, exalt the voice unto "them" ("of his wrath"). Shake the hand, that they may go into the gates of the nobles. They come from a far country, from the end of heaven, even the Lord, and the weapons of his indignation, to destroy the whole land. Is. xiii. 2-5. Thou art my battle-axe, and weapons of war (said God to Israel), for with thee will I break in pieces the nations; and with thee will I destroy kingdoms. And with thee will I break in pieces the horse and his rider; and with thee will I break in pieces the chariot and his rider. With thee also will I break in pieces man and woman; and with thee will I break in pieces old and young; and with thee will I break in pieces the young man and the maid. I will also break in pieces with thee the shepherd and his flock; and with thee will I break in pieces the husbandman and his yoke of oxen; and with thee will I break in pieces captains and rulers. Je. li. 20-23. And the Lord shall utter his voice before his army; for his camp is very great: for he is strong that executeth his word. For the day of the Lord is great, and very terrible, and who can abide it? And I will restore to "you" ("Zion") the years that

But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage. Lu. xx. 35. Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man. Lu. xxi. 36. It was necessary (said Paul and Barnabas to the Jews) that the word of God should first have been spoken to you, but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles. 4. xiii. 46. We ourselves glory in you, for your patience and faith, in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure, which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God, that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer. 2 Th. i. 4, 5. Thou hast a few names even in Sardis, which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white, for they are worthy. Re. iii. 4. And the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge? Turn you at my reproof. Behold, I will pour out my Spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you. Pr. i. 20-23. Doth not wisdom cry? and understanding put forth her voice? standeth in the top of high places, by the way in the places of the paths. Forsake the foolish and live; and go in the way of understanding. Pr. ix. 4, 5, 6. Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters; and he that hath no money, come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk, without money and without price. Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? And your labour for that which satisfieth not? Hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness. Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David. Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near. Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. Is. lv. 1, 2, 3. 6, 7. Go ye into all the world (said Jesus to the eleven apostles), and preach the Gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized, shall be saved; but he that believeth not, shall be damned. Mar. xvi. 15, 16. Go out quickly (said the master of the house to the servant in the parable) into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind. And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room. And the Lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled. For I say unto you, that none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper.
