17 understanding? Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into 18 the draught? But those things which proceed out of the mouth come 19 forth from the heart; and they defile the man. For out of the heart

were afraid to ask him. Mar. ix. 32. And they understood none of these things (which Jesus spake of his sufferings, death and resurrection); and this saying was hid from them, neither knew they the things which were spoken. Lu. xviii. 34. Then (having eat with his disciples after his resurrection) opened he their understanding, that they might understand the Scriptures. Lu. xxiv. 45. When, for the time, ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again, which be the first principles of the oracles of God, and are become such as have need of milk and not of strong meat. He. v. 12.

17 That whatsoever entereth in at the mouth.] Whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him; because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats. And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man. Mar. vii. 18-20. A good man, out of the good treasure of his heart, bringeth forth that which is good, and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart, bringeth forth that which is evil, for of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. Lu. vi. 45. Meats (are lawful) for the belly and the belly for meats; but God shall destroy both it and them. 1 Co. vị. 13. Touch not, taste not, handle not (the rudiments or elements of the world), which all are to perish with the using. Col. ii. 21, 22. The tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body. Ja. iii. 6.

And is cast out into the draught.] "They" ("the captains of Jehu") brake down the image of Baal, and brake down the house of Baal, and made it a draught-house unto this day. 2 Ki. x. 27.

18 Those things which proceed out of the mouth.] See verse 11, and chap. xii. 34. The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit, he (the wicked) hath left off to be wise, and to do good. Ps. xxxvi. 3. A naughty person, a wicked man walketh with a froward mouth. Pr. vi. 12. The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable, but the mouth of the wicked speaketh frowardness. Pr. x. 32. The tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright, but the mouth of fools poureth out foolishness. The heart of the righteous studieth to answer, but the mouth of the wicked poureth out evil things. Pr. xv. 2. 28. Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant (said the nobleman in the parable, who left money with his servants to trade with). Thou knewest that I was an

austere man, taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow, &c. Lu. xix. 22. The tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity; the tongue no man can tame. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison; there with bless we God, even the Father, and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing my brethren, these things ought not so to be. Ja. iii. 6-10. And there was given unto him (the beast), a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies. Re. xiii. 5. And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven. Re. xiii. 6.

19 Out of the heart proceed, &c.] See verse 11. God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. Ge. vi. 5. The imagination of man's heart (said God) is evil from his youth. Ge. viii. 21. Keep thy heart with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of life. Pr. iv. 23. Frowardness in "his" ("the wicked man's") heart, he deviseth mischief continually, he soweth discord. Pr. vi. 14. Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him. Pr. xxii. 15. The thought of foolishness is sin. Pr. xxiv. 9. The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked, who can know it? Je. xvii. 9. From within, out of the heart, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness; all these evil things come from within and defile the man. Mar. vii. 21, 22, 23. As it is written, there is none righteous, no not one; there is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God; they are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable, there is none that doeth good, no not one. Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips, whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness; their feet are swift to shed blood, destruction and misery are in their ways, and the way of peace have they not known; there is no fear of God before their eyes. Now we know, that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law; that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Ro. iii. 10–19. I know (said Paul) that in me (that is, in my flesh) dwelleth no good thing, for to will is present with me; but how to perform that

proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: These are the things which defile 20 a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man. Then Jesus went thence, and departed into the coasts of Tyre and 21

which is good, I find not. Ro. vii. 18. The carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. Ro. viii. 7. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. Ro. viii. 8. Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these, adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like. Of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. Ga. v. 19, 20, 21. You hath he quickened who were dead in trespasses and sins; wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the Prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: among whom also we all had our conversation in times past, in the lusts of our flesh fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. Ep. ii. 1, 2, 3. Put them in mind to speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men; for we ourselves were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy, he saved us by the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Ghost, which he shed on us abundantly, through Jesus Christ our Saviour. Tit. iii. 1. 6.

Evil thoughts, &c.] See chap. ix. 4. I hate vain thoughts, but thy law do I love. Ps. cxix. 113. Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts, and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. Is. lv. 7. Their feet (of the Jews) run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood, their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity. Is. lix. 7. O Jerusalem, wash thine heart from wickedness, that thou mayest be saved: how long shall thy vain thoughts lodge within thee? Je. iv. 14. Repent of this thy wickedness (said Peter to Simon the Sorcerer), and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee. Ac. viii. 22. Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God, for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man; but every man is

tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed; then when lust hath conceived it bringeth forth sin, and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. Ja. i. 13, 14, 15.

20 Which defile a man.] Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are. 1 Co. iii. 16, 17.) Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived, neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God: and such were some of you; but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. 1 Co. vi. 9, 10, 11. Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication, sinneth against his own body. What! know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's. 1 Co. vi. 18, 19, 20. Fornication and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints: neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient; but rather giving of thanks. For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ, and of God. Ep. v. 3-5.

But to eat with unwashen hands.] verse 2. Woe unto you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess. Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. Mat. xxiii. 25, 26. Now do ye Pharisees (said Jesus) make clean the outside of the cup and the platter, but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness. Ye fools, did not he that made that which is without, make that which is within also? Lu. xi. 39, 40.

21 And departed into the coasts.] From thence he arose and went unto the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and entered into an house, and would have no man know it; but he could not be hid. Mar. vii. 24.

22 Sidon. And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou Son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil. 23 But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and

besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us. 24 But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep

Tyre and Sidon.] See chap. x. 5, 6, and xi. 21, 22, 23. Zebulun shall dwell at the haven of the sea, and he shall be for an haven of ships; and his border shall be unto Zidon. Ge. xlix. 13. And the Lord delivered them (the kings assembled at the waters of Merom) into the hand of Israel, who smote them, and chased them unto great Zidon, and unto Misrephoth-main, and unto the valley of Mizpeh, eastward. Jos. xi. 8. All the inhabitants of the hill-country from Lebanon unto Misrephoth-main, and all the Sidonians, them will I drive out from before the children of Israel. Jos. xiii. 6. And the fifth lot came out for the (tribe of the) children of Asher, and their border was (with various other countries), Hebron, and Rehob, and Hammon, and Kanah, even unto great Zidon; and then the coast turneth to Ramah and to the strong city “Tyre” (“ Tzor”). Jos. xix. 24-29. Neither did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Accho, nor the inhabitants of Zidon, &c. Ju. i. 31. 22 A woman of Canaan, &c.] See chap. iii. 8, 9. And the daughter of Tyre shall be there with a gift; even the rich among the people shall entreat thy favour. Ps. xlv. 12. Thou art not sent to many people of a strange speech and of an hard language, whose words thou canst not understand, surely had I sent thee to them, they would have hearkened unto thee! Ez. iii. 6. The woman (whose daughter had an unclean spirit) was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation; and she besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter. Mar. vii. 26.

Have mercy on me, O Lord.] See chap. ix. 27. Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness; thou hast enlarged me when I was in distress, have mercy upon me and hear my prayer. Ps. iv. 1. Have mercy upon me,

O Lord, for I am weak, O Lord, heal me, for my bones are vexed. Ps. vi. 2. Jesus, master, have mercy on us (said the ten lepers). Lu. xvii. 13. And the Publican (in the parable), standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. Lu. xviii. 13.

Son of David.] See chap. i. 1, and ix. 27. My daughter is grievously vexed, &c.] Lord, have mercy on my son (said a certain man to Jesus), for he is lunatick, and sore vexed. Mat. xvii. 15. A certain woman, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit, heard of him, and came and fell at his feet. Mar. vii. 25. Master, I have brought unto thee my son

(said one of the multitude), which hath a dumb spirit; and wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him: and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away. And they brought him unto "him" ("Jesus"); and when he saw him, straightway the spirit tare him: and he fell on the ground, and wallowed, foaming. And he asked his father, How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child. And oft-times it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters to destroy him; but if thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us. Mar. ix. 17. 22. See chap. ix. 27; xvii. 15.

23 He answered her not a word.] And Joseph saw his brethren and knew them, but made himself strange unto them, and spake roughly unto them. Ge. xlii. 7. Thou shalt remember all the way which the Lord thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments or no. De. viii. 2. Unto thee will I cry, O Lord, my rock, be not silent unto me, lest, if thou be silent to me, I become like them that go down into the pit. Ps. xxviii. 1. When I cry and shout, he shutteth out my prayer. La. iii. 8.

Send her away.] See chap. xiv. 15. When he (blind Bartimeus) heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth (that passed by), he began to cry out, and to say, Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me. And many charged him that he should hold his peace, but he cried the more a great deal, Thou Son of David, have mercy on me. Mar. x. 47, 48.

24 I am not sent but unto, &c.] See chap ix. 36; x. 5, 6. All that found them ( sheep, said God) have devoured them; and their adversaries said, We offend not, because they have sinned against the Lord, the habitation of justice, even the Lord, the hope of their fathers. Je. 1. 7. I will set up one shepherd over them (my sheep, said the Lord and he shall feed them, and he shall be their shepherd. Ez. xxxiv. 23. Ye (the Jews) are the children of the prophets from Samuel, and those that follow after, as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days; ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed. Ac. iii. 24, 25. Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumci

of the house of Israel. Then came she and worshipped him, say- 25 ing, Lord, help me. But he answered and said, It is not meet to 26 take the children's bread, and to cast it to dogs. And she said, 27 Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their

25 Then came she.] The multitude rebuked them (the two blind men) because they should hold their peace: but they cried the more, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David. Mat. xx. 31. Let me go (said the angel with whom Jacob wrestled), for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me. Ge. xxxii. 26. Yea, he had power over the angel and prevailed, he wept and made supplication unto him; he found him in Bethel, and there he spake with us. Ho. xii. 4. I say unto you, Though he (who said to the friend who went to him at midnight, Trouble me not) will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity, he will rise, and give him as many (loaves) as he needeth. And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. Lu. xi. 8—10. Men ought always to pray, and not to faint (and he spake the parable of the unjust judge, and the importunate widow). Lu. xviii. 1, &c.

Worshipped him.] See chap. ii. 2. 11. Lord, help me.] If thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us (said the father of him who had the dumb and deaf spirit). Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth. And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe, help thou mine unbelief. Mar. ix. 22-24.

26 It is not meet to take the children's bread, &c.] See chap. vii. 6. It is not meet (said Jesus to the Cyrophenician woman) to take the children's bread, and cast it unto the dogs. And she answered, and said unto him, Yes, Lord, yet the dogs under the table eat of the children's crumbs. Mar. vii. 27, 28. And he (Jesus) said unto me (Paul), Depart, for I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles. And they (the Jews) gave him audience unto this word, and then lifted up their voices, and said, Away with such a fellow from the earth, for it is not fit that he should live. Ac. xxii. 21, 22. I could wish (said Paul) that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the fiesh, who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises. Ro. ix. 3, 4. We who are Jews by nature, and not sinners of the Gentiles, even we, have believed in Jesus VOL. II.

Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law. Ga. ii. 15, 16. Remember that at that time ye (Gentiles) were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and. strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world. Ep. ii. 12. For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie. Re. xxii. 15.

27 Truth, Lord.] See chap. viii. 8. aud com. I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies (said Jacob to the Lord in prayer), and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant. Ge. xxxii. 10. Behold, I am vile; what shall I answer thee? I will lay mine hand upon my mouth; once have I spoken; but I will not answer: yea twice; but I will proceed no further. Job xl. 4, 5. I know that thou (Lord) canst do every thing, and that no thought can be withholden from thee: who is he that hideth counsel without knowledge? Therefore have I uttered that I understood not, things too wonderful for me, which I knew not; hear, I beseech thee, and I will speak; I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me. I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear, but now mine eye seeth thee, wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes. Job xlii. 2—6. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned and done this evil in thy sight, that thou mightest be justified, and be clear, when thou judgest. Behold, I was shapen in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. Ps. li. 4, 5. Thou shalt know that I am the Lord, that thou (Jerusalem) mayest remember, and be confounded, and never open thy mouth any more, because of thy shame, when I am pacified toward thee for all that thou hast done, saith the Lord God. Ez. xvi. 62, 63. O my God (said Daniel), incline thine ear, and hear; open thine eyes, and behold our desolations, and the city which is called by thy name, for we do not present our supplications before thee for our righteousness, but for thy great mercies. Da. ix. 18. Lord, trouble not thyself (said the centurion, whose servant was sick), for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof: Wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee; but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed. Lu. vii. 6, 7. I will arise and go to my father (said the prodigal in the parable), and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee, and am no more worthy to be called thy son, make me as one of thy hired servants.

28 master's table. Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her

The other (malefactor crucified with Jesus) answering, rebuked him (his fellow malefactor), saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this man hath done nothing amiss. And he said unto Jesus, Lord, Remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. Lu. xxiii. 40—42. Let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged. Now we know, what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Ro. iii. 4. 19. Last of all he (Jesus) was seen of me (Paul) as of one born out of due time, for I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 1 Co. xv. 8, 9. I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry, who was before a blasphemer, and persecutor, and injurious; but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief, and the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love, which is in Christ Jesus. This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, That Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief. 1 Ti. i. 12-15.

Yet the dogs eat of the crumbs, &c.] See chap. v. 45. There was a certain beggar named Lazarus (in the parable) who was laid at "his" ("the rich man's) gate, full of sores, and desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table; moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. Lu. xvi. 21. Is he the God of the Jews only? Is he not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also. Ro. iii. 29. There is no difference between the Jew and the Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. Ro. x. 12. Unto me, who am less than all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, to know the love of Christ which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God. Ep. iii. 8. 19.

28 Jesus answered and said, &c.] Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him, but I will maintain mine own ways before him. Job xiii. 15. He knoweth the way that I take; when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as

gold. Job xxiii. 10. Though he cause grief, yet will he have compassion according to the multitude of his mercies. La. iii. 32.

Great is thy faith.] See chap. viii. 10. and xiv. 31. I said indeed that thy house, and the house of thy father, should walk before me for ever; but now the Lord saith, be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed. 1 Sa. ii. 30. And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith. Lu. xvii. 5. And (Abraham) being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara's womb: he staggered not at the promise of Ged through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God. Ro. iv. 19, 20. We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you. 2 The. i. 3.

Be it unto thee, &c.] See chap. viii. 13; ix. 29, 30. He (the Lord) will fulfil the desire of them that fear him: he also will hear their cry, and will save them. Ps. cxlv. 19. Daughter (said Jesus, to the woman haring an issue of blood), thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague. Mar. v. 34. And he said unto her (whose daughter had an unclean spirit), For this saying (the dogs under the table eat of the children's crumbs) go thy way, the devil is gone out of thy daughter. And when she was come to her house, she found the devil gone out, and her daughter laid upon the bed. Mar. vii. 29, 30. If thou canst believe (said he to the father of him who had the dumb and deaf spirit), all things are possible to him that believeth. And straightway the father

of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe, help thou mine unbelief. Mar. ix. 23, 24. I have not found so great faith (as that of the centurion whose servant was sick), no, not in Israel. Thy faith hath saved thee, go in peace (said he to the woman who had been a sinner). Lu. vii. 9. 50. Receive thy sight (said he to the blind man of Jericha), thy faith hath saved thee; and immediately he received his sight, and followed him, glorifying God; and all the people when they saw it, gave praise unto God. Lu. xviii. 42, 43. Go thy way (said Jesus to the nobleman whose son was sick at Capernaum), thy son liveth. And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way; and as he was now going down his servants met him, and told him, saying, Thy son liveth. Then inquired he of them the hour when be began to amend. And they said unto him, Yesterday, at the seventh hour, the fever left
