9 When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and 10 stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star, 11 they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had

9 The star.] See verse 2. What man is he that feareth the Lord? him shall he teach in the way that he shall choose. Ps. xxv. 12. My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; so that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; if thou seek her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God: for the Lord giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. Pr. ii. 1-6. I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me. Pr. viii. 17. We have a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day-star arise in your

hearts. 2 Pe. i. 19.

10 They rejoiced.] See verse 2. O let the nations be glad, and sing for joy; for thou shalt judge the people righteously, and govern the nations upon earth. Ps. lxvii. 4. He made him (Jacob) ride on the high places of the earth, that he might eat the increase of the fields; and he made him to suck honey out of the rock, and oil out of the flinty rock. De. xxxii. 13. Glory ye in his holy name : let the heart of them rejoice that seek the Lord. Ps. cv. 3. The angel said unto them (the shepherds abiding in the fields), Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them. Lu. ii. 10. 20. Then (when almost the whole city came to gether to hear the word of God) Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you; but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting salvation, lo, we turn to the Gentiles: for so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth. And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord. Ac. xiii. 46, 47, 48. Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy; as it is written, For this cause I will confess to thee among

the Gentiles, and sing unto thy name. And again he saith, Rejoice ye Gentiles, with his people. And again Esaias saith, There shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; in him shall the Gentiles trust." Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost. Ro. xv. 9-13.

11 They saw the young child.] And they (the shepherds) came with haste, and found Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. And it was revealed unto him (Simeon, a devout man of Jerusalem) by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ: and he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law, then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said, Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: for mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; a light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel. And she (Anna, a prophetess) coming in that instant gave thanks likewise, unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem. Lu. ii. 16. 26-32. 38.

Worshipped him.] See verse 2. The devil taketh him (Jesus) up into an exceeding high mountain, and shewed him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; and saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan : for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. Mat. iv. 9, 10. They that were in the ship (when Jesus walked on the sea) came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God. Mat. xiv. 33. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little blessed are all they that put their trust in him. Ps. ii. 12. O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the Lord our Maker. Ps. xcv. 6. The Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son; that all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son, honoureth not the Father which hath sent him. John v. 22, 23. As Peter was coming in Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet,

opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. And being warned of God in a dream, 12

and worshipped him: but Peter took him up, saying, Stand up; I myself also am a man. Ac. x. 25, 26. And I fell at his (the angel's) feet (said John) to worship him: and he said unto me, See thou do it not; I am thy fellow servant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God. Re. xix. 10. And I John saw these things (the blessed state of God's servants), and heard them: and when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things (the glorious state of the servants of God). Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellow servant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God. And he saith unto me, Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book, for the time is at hand. Re. xxii. 8, 9, 10.

They presented unto him.] See chap. xiv. 33. And their father Israel said unto them (his sons), If it must be so now (that I send Benjamin), do this: take of the best fruits in the land in your vessels, and carry down the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, spices and myrrh, nuts and almonds. Ge. xliii. 11. The children of Belial said, How shall this "man" ("Saul") save us? And they despised him, and brought him no presents: but he held his peace (he was as though he had been deaf). 1 Sa. x. 27. And she (the queen of Sheba) came to Jerusalem with a very great train, with camels that bare spices, and very much gold, and precious stones; and when she was come to Solomon she communed with him of all that was in her heart. And she gave the king an hundred and twenty talents of gold, and of spices very great store, and precious stones; there came no more such abundance of spices as these which the queen of Sheba gave to king Solomon. 1 Ki. x. 2. 10. The kings of Tarshish and of the Isles shall bring presents, the kings of Sheba and Seba shall offer gifts. And he (Solomon as a type of Christ) shall live, and to him shall be given of the gold of Sheba. Ps. lxxii. 10. 15. The multitude of camels shall cover "thee" ("the Church of Christ"), the dromedaries of Midian and Ephah. All they from Sheba shall come, they shall bring gold and incense, and they shall shew forth the praises of the Lord. Is. lx. 6. And frankincense.] Take thou also unto thee (said the Lord to Moses) of pure myrrh five hundred shekels, and of sweet cinnamon half so much, even two hundred and fifty shekels, and of sweet calamus two hundred and fifty shekels. And thou shalt make it a perfume, a confection after the art of the apothecary, tempered together, pure and holy. Ex. xxx. 23. 35. When any will offer a meat

offering unto the Lord, his offering shall be of fine flour, and he shall pour oil upon it, and put frankincense thereon, and he shall bring it to Aaron's sons, the priests, and he shall take thereout his handful of the flour thereof, and the priest shall burn the memorial of it upon the altar, to be an offering made by fire of a sweet savour unto the Lord. Le. ii. 1. 2. And he (the priest) shall take of it (the meat offering) his handful of the flour of the meat offering, and of the oil thereof, and all the frankincense which is upon the meat offering, and shall burn it upon the altar for a sweet savour, even the memorial of it, unto the Lord. Le. vi. 15. One spoon of ten shekels of gold, full of incense (part of the offering of Nahshon for the tabernacle, &c.). The golden spoons were twelve full of incense; all the gold of the spoons was an hundred and twenty shekels. Nu. vii. 14. 86. All thy garments (applied to Christ and his kingdom) smell of myrrh, aloes, and cassia, out of the ivory palaces whereby they have made thee glad. Ps. xlv. 8. From the rising of the sun, even unto the going down of the same, my name shall be great among the Gentiles: and in every place incense shall be offered unto my name, and a pure offering. Mal. i. 11. And when he (the Lamb in the midst of the throne) had taken the book (which was in the right hand of him that sat upon the throne), the four beasts, and four and twenty elders, fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials, full of odours, which are the prayers of saints. Re. v. 8.

12 Warned of God.] See verse 22. Behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto "him" ("Joseph" minding to put away Mary privily), saying, Joseph, thou son of David fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife, &c. Mat. i. 20. When "he" ("Pilate") was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that just man (Jesus), for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him. Mat. xxvii. 19. And God said unto "him" ("Abimelech") in a dream, Yea, I know that thou didst this (taking Sarah) in the integrity of thy heart: for I also withheld thee from sinning against me: now therefore restore the "man" (" Abraham") his wife, &c. Ge. xx. 6, 7. And God came to Laban the Syrian in a dream by night, and said unto him, Take heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad. Ge. xxxi. 34. For God speaketh in a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, and slumberings upon the bed, when he openeth the ears of men, and sealeth their instruction, that he may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man. Job xxxiii. 15,

that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own 13 country another way. And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the

16, 17. Then was the secret (of Nebuchadnezzar's dream) revealed unto Daniel in a night vision. Da. ii. 19.

They departed into their own country.] The midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men children alive. Ex. i. 17. Peter and John answered and said (unto the council of the Jews), Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye. Ac. iv. 19. Peter and the other apostles answered (the high priest) and said, We ought to obey God rather than man. Ac. v. 29.

For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God: for it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness. 1 Co. iii. 19.

13 The angel of the Lord.] See verse 19. Mat. i. 20. The angel of the Lord by night opened the prison doors, and brought "them" ("the apostles") forth (who had been imprisoned by the high priest and Sadducees). Ac. v. 19. And when the angel which spake unto Cornelius was departed, he called two of his household servants, and a devout soldier of them that waited on him continually, and he sent them to Joppa. And they said (unto Peter), Cornelius the centurion, a just man, and one that feareth God, and of good report among all the nation of the Jews, was warned from God by an holy angel to send for thee into his house, and to hear words of thee. Ac. x. 7. 22. And when Peter was come to himself (for he thought he saw a vision) he said, Now I know of a surety that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews. Ac. xii. 11. To which of the angels said he (the Lord) at any time, Sit on my right hand until I make thine enemies thy footstool? Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation ? He. i. 13, 14.

Arise, and take the young child, &c.] When they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another. Mat. x. 23. And the woman (who brought forth the man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron) fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God; that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days. And to the woman were given two great wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, where she is nourished for a time and times and a half time, from the face of the serpent. Re. xii. 7. 14.

Until I bring thee word.] See verse 19, 20.

Hereby shall ye know (said Joshua to the people of Israel) that the living God is among you. As soon as the soles of the feet of the priests that bear the ark of the Lord, the Lord of all the earth, shall rest in the waters of Jordan, that the waters of Jordan shall be cut off from the waters that come down from above, and they shall stand upon an heap. And the priests, that bare the ark of the covenant of the Lord, stood firm on dry ground in the midst of Jordan, and all the Israelites passed over on dry ground, until all the people were passed clean over Jordan. Jos. iii. 13. 17. For the priests which bare the ark stood in the midst of Jordan, until every thing was finished that the Lord commanded Joshua to speak unto the people. And it came to pass, when the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the Lord were come up out of the midst of Jordan, and the soles of the priests' feet were lifted up unto the dry land, that the waters of Jordan returned unto their place, and flowed over all his banks, as they did before. Jos. iv. 10. 18. Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire (said Nebuchadnezzar), and they have no hurt, and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God. Then Nebuchadnezzar came near to the mouth of the burning fiery furnace, and spake and said, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, ye servants of the most high God, come forth, and come hither. Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego came forth of the midst of the fire. Da. iii. 25, 26. And the keeper of the prison told this saying to Paul, The magistrates have sent to let you go now therefore depart, and go in peace. Ac. xvi. 36.

For Herod will seek, &c.] See verse 16. And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river. Ex. i. 22. And the woman (a daughter of Levi, married to a man of the house of Levi) conceived, and bare a son, and when she saw him that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months; and when she could no longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and with pitch, and put the child therein, and she laid it in the flags by the river's brink. Ex. ii. 2, 3. Therefore am I troubled at his presence, when I consider I am afraid of him; because I was not cut off before the darkness, neither hath he covered the darkness from my face. Job xxiii. 15. 17. The same (the king who succeeded Pharaoh king of Egypt) dealt subtilely with our kindred, and evil entreated our fathers, so that they cast out their young

young child to destroy him. When he arose, he took the young 14 child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt: And 15 was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son. Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked 16

children, to the end that they might not live. Ac. vii. 19. And the dragon stood before the woman (travailing in birth and pained to be delivered) which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child, as soon as it was born. Re. xii. 4.

14 He took the young child.] See verse 20, 21. Then Joseph being raised from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife. Mat. i. 24. Whereupon (said Paul, declaring his wonderful conversion), O king Agrippa, I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision, &c. Ac. xxvi. 19.

15 Until the death of Herod.] See verse 19. About that time (when Agabus prophesied a dearth) Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the Church. Ac. xii. 1. And when he (Herod) had apprehended him (Peter), he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending, after Easter, to bring him forth to the people. And the angel of the Lord smote him (Herod) because he gave not God the glory. And he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost; but the word of God grew and multiplied. Ac. xii. 4. 23, 24.

That it might be fulfilled.] See verse 17. 23. Now all this was done (the angel of the Lord appearing unto Joseph, &c.) that it might be fulfilled, which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet (Isaiah). Mat. i. 22. He (Jesus) came (leaving Nazareth) and dwelt in Capernaum, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, The land of Zabulon, and the land of Naphthali, &c. Mat. iv. 13, 14, 15, 16. He (Jesus) healed all that were sick, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses. Mat. viii. 17. And (Jesus) charged them, that they should not make him known, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Behold, my servant whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased; I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles. Mat. xii. 16, 17, 18. All this was done (the sending to Bethphage for the ass, &c.) that it might be fulfilled, which was spoken by the prophet, saying, Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass. Mat. xxi. 4, 5. Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father (said Jesus to Peter, who struck the servant of the high priest), and

he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels; but how then shall the Scriptures be fulfilled: that thus it must be. Are ye come out as against a thief, with swords and staves to take me? &c. But all this was done, that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Mat. xxvi. 53–56. And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, they parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots. Mat. xxvii. 35. And he said unto them (his apostles before whom he did eat of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb), These are the words which I spake unto you while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms concerning me. Lu. xxiv. 44. After this (commending his mother to John) Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. came the soldiers and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him, but when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs, but one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came thereout blood and water. These things were done that the Scripture should be fulfilled; A bone of him shall not be broken, and again another Scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced. John xix. 28. 32-37. Men and brethren (said Peter to the disciples) this Scripture must needs be fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus. Ac. i. 16.

Then

Out of Egypt have I called my son.] Thou shalt say unto Pharaoh (said God to Moses), Thus saith the Lord, Israel is my son, &c. Ex. iv. 22. God brought him forth out of Egypt, he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn. He shall eat up the nations, his enemies, and shall break their bones, and pierce them through with his arrows. Nu. xxiv. 8. When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt. Ho. xi. 1.

16 When he saw that he was mocked.] See (said Potiphar's wife to her attendants) he hath brought in an Hebrew unto us to mock

of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old, and under, according to the time which he 17 had diligently enquired of the wise men. Then was fulfilled that 18 which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted,

fallen down under him at the sight of the angel of the Lord), Because thou hast mocked me (I smote thee), I would there were a sword in mine hand, for now would I kill thee. Nu. xxii. 29. And Delilah said unto Samson, Behold, thou hast mocked me, and told me lies, now tell me I pray thee wherewith thou mightest be bound. Ju. xvi. 10. I am as one mocked of his neighbour. Job xii. 4.

Was exceeding wroth.] A stone is heavy, and the sand weighty, but a fool's wrath is heavier than them both. Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous. Pr. xxvii. 3,4. Then Nebuchadnezzar in his rage and fury commanded to bring Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, &c. Da. iii. 13. Then (when they, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, refused to worship his golden image) was Nebuchadnezzar full of fury, and the form of his visage was changed, and he commanded the most mighty men that were in his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, and to cast them into the burning fiery furnace. Da. iii. 19, 20.

And slew all the children.] Cursed be their anger (Simeon and Levi's) for it was fierce, and their wrath, for it was cruel (against the Shechemites). Ge. xlix. 7. Hazael (the messenger of Benhadad, king of Syria) went to meet "him" (" Elisha"): and Hazael said, Why weepeth my lord? And he answered, Because I know the evil that thou wilt do unto the children of Israel; their strong holds wilt thou set on fire, and their young men wilt thou slay with the sword, and wilt dash their children, and rip up their women with child. 2 Ki. viii. 12. As a roaring lion, and a ranging bear, so is a wicked ruler over the poor people. A man that doeth violence to the blood of any person shall flee to the pit, let no man stay him. Pr. xxviii. 15. 17. Behold, the Lord cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain. Is. xxvi. 21. Their feet run to evil; and they (the Jews) make haste to shed innocent blood; their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity: wasting and destruction are in their paths. Is. lix. 7. Therefore (because ye have ploughed wickedness, because thou didst trust in thy way, in the multitude of thy mighty men) shall a tumult arise among thy people, and all thy fortresses shall be spoiled, as Shalmon spoiled Betharbal in the day of battle; the mother

was dashed in pieces upon her children. Ho. x. 14. I saw the woman (the mother of harlots) drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus, and when I saw her I wondered with great admiration. Re. xvii. 6.

According to the time.] See verse 7.

18 Rama.] Thus saith the Lord; A voice was heard in Ramah; lamentation, and bitter weeping; Rachel weeping for her children, refused to be comforted for her children, because they were not. Je. xxxi. 15.

Lamentation.] I have heard a voice as of a woman in travail, and the anguish as of her that bringeth forth her first child; the voice of the daughter of Zion, that bewaileth herself, that spreadeth her hands, saying, Woe is me now; for my soul is wearied because of murderers. Je. iv. 31. Thus saith the Lord God of hosts, Consider ye, and call for the mourning women, that they may come; and let them make haste, and take up a wailing for us, that our eyes may run down with tears, and our eyelids gush out with waters; for a voice of wailing is heard out of Zion. How are we spoiled; we are greatly confounded, because we have forsaken the land, because our dwellings have cast us out. Yet hear the word of the Lord, O ye women, and let your ear receive the word of his mouth, and teach your daughters wailing, and every one her neighbour lamentation. For death is come up into our windows, and is entered into our palaces to cut off the children from without, and the young men from the streets. Je. ix. 17—21. And he (the Lord) spread "it" ("the roll of a book") before me; and it was written within and without: and there was written therein, lamentations, and mourning, and woe. ii. 10. I beheld and heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, Woe, woe, woe, to the inhabitants of the earth, by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels, which are yet to sound.
