saying, Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in 18 whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles. He shall not strive, 19

confirmeth the word of his servant, and performeth the counsel of his messengers; that saith to Jerusalem, Thou shalt be inhabited; and to the cities of Judah, Ye shall be built, and I will raise up the decayed places thereof. Is. xliv. 26.

Saying.] Behold my servant whom I uphold, mine elect in whom my soul delighteth. I have put my spirit upon him; he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles; he shall not ery, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street. A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth; he shall not fail nor be discouraged till he have set judgment in the earth, and the isles shall wait for his law. Is. xlii. 1—4.

18 My servant.] See chap. xvii. 5. And now saith the Lord that formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob again to him, Though Israel be not gathered, yet shall I be glorious in the eyes of the Lord, and my God shall be my strength. And he said, It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant, to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel; I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth. Is. xlix. 5, 6. Behold, my servant shall deal prudently; he shall be exalted and extolled, and be very high! Is. lii. 13. He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied; by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities! Is. liii. 11. Hear now, O Joshua, the high priest, thou and thy fellows that sit before thee; for they are men wondered at; for, behold, I will bring forth my servant, The Branch. Zec. iii. 8. Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus; who being in the form of God thought it not robbery to be equal with God; but made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men. Phi. ii. 5-7.

Whom I have chosen.] Thou speakest in vision to thy Holy One, and saidst, I have laid help upon one that is mighty; I have exalted one chosen out of the people. Ps. Ixxxix. 19. Listen, O isles, unto me, and hearken, ye people from far: the Lord hath called me from the womb: from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name: and he hath made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand hath he hid me, and made me a polished shaft: in his quiver hath he hid me, and said unto me, Thou art my servant, O Israel, in whom I will be glorified. Is. xlix. 1-3. And the people stood beholding (Christ crucified); and

the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God. Lu. xxiii. 35. As new-born babes desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby if so be that ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious, to whom coming as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious. 1 Pe. ii. 2—4.

My beloved.] See chap. iii. 17.

I will put my spirit upon him.] See chap. iii. 16. and com. The spirit of the Lord is upon me; because he hath anointed me to preach the Gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the broken hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised. Lu. iv. 18. The word I say ye know which was published throughout all Judea, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached, how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power, who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil, for God was with him. Ac. x. 37, 38.

And he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles.] Upon the land of my people shall come up thorns and briers, &c. &c. Until the spirit be poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness be a fruitful field, and the fruitful field be counted for a forest, then judgment shall dwell in the wilderness, and righteousness remain in the fruitful field. Is. xxxii. 15, 16. It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth. Is. xlix. 6. Behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people. But the Lord shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee; and the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising. Is. Ix. 2, 3. And the Gentiles shall see thy righteousness, and all kings thy glory; and thou shalt be called by a new name which the mouth of the Lord shall name. Is. Ixii. 2. O Lord, my strength and my fortress, and my refuge in the day of affliction, the Gentiles shall come unto thee from the ends of the earth, and shall say, Surely our fathers have inherited lies, vanity, and things wherein there is no profit. Je. xvi. 19. Mine eyes have seen thy salvation (said Simeon, having the child Jesus in his arms), which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; a light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel. Lu. ii. 30-32. Then remembered I

*nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets. 20 A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not

(said Peter) the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water, but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost. Ac. xi. 16. When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life. Ac. xi. 18. When the Jews saw the multitudes (who came to hear the word of God from Paul and Bar nabas) they were filled with envy, and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming. Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles. For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth. And when the Gentiles heard this they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord, and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed. Ac. 'xiii. 45-48. And when they (Paul and Barnabas) were come, and had gathered the church together, they rehearsed all that God had done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith unto the Gentiles. Ac. xiv. 27. I have appeared unto thee (said Jesus to Saul) for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of things in the which I will appear unto thee, delivering thee from the people and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee, to open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God; that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me. Ac. xxvi. 16-18. Now I say (said Paul) that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision, for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers; and that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy; as it is written, For this cause I will confess to thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy name. And again, he saith, Rejoice, ye Gentiles, with his people. And again, Praise the Lord, all ye Gentiles; and laud him, all ye people. And again, Esaias saith, There shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles, in him shall the Gentiles trust. Ro. xv. 8-12. Wherefore remember, that ye being in times past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called uncircumcision by that which is called the circumcision in the flesh made by hands, that at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise,

having no hope, and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus, ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. Ep. ii. 11-13. He (Jesus Christ) made known unto me (said Paul) the mystery (as I wrote afore in few words, whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ) which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit; that the Gentiles should be fellow-heirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the Gospel, whereof I was made a minister according to the gift of the grace of God, given unto me by the effectual working of his power. Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that 1 should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ. Ep. iii. 5. 8. 19 Shall not strive.] See chap. xi. 29. The kingdom of God cometh not with obser vation. Lu. xvii. 20. My kingdom is not of this world; if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now is my kingdom not from hence. Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all. John xviii. 36-38. The servant of the Lord must not strive, but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, in meekness instructing those that oppose themselves, if God perad venture will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth. 2 Ti. ii. 24, 25.

20 Bruised reed, &c.] See chap. xi. 28. Now, behold, "thou" (“Hezekiah") trustest upon the staff of this bruised reed, even upon Egypt (said the king of Assyria), on which if a man lean, it will go into his hand and pierc it; so is Pharaoh, king of Egypt, unto all that trust on him. 2 Ki. xviii. 21. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise, Ps. li. 17. He healeth the broken heart and bindeth up their wounds. Ps. cxlvii. 3. He shall feed his flock like a shepherd; he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young. Is. xl. 11. Thus saith the High and Lofty One that inhabitetheternity, whose name is Holy, I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit

quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory. And in his 21 name shall the Gentiles trust. Then was brought unto him one 22

of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones. Is. lvii. 15. The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, and because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek. He hath sent me to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound. To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; to appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes; the oil of joy for mourning; the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness, that they might be called Trees of Righteousness; The planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified. Is. lxi. 1, 2, 3. The Lord will not cast off for ever. But though he cause grief, yet will he have compassion according to the multitude of his mercies; for he doth not afflict willingly, nor grieve the children of men, to crush under his feet all the prisoners of the earth. La. iii. 31-34. I will seek that which was lost, and bring again that which was driven away; and will bind up that which was broken, and will strengthen that which was sick; but I will destroy the fat and strong; I will feed them with judgment. Ez. xxxiv. 16. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the Gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the broken-hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind; to set at liberty them that are bruised. Lu. iv. 18. Ye ought rather to forgive “him” (“the incestuous person, having been sufficiently censured"), and comfort him, lest perhaps such an one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow. 2 Co. ii. 7. Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees, and make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way, but let it rather be healed. He. xii. 12, 13.

Till he send forth judgment.] O sing unto the Lord a new song, for he hath done marvellous things; his right hand and his holy arm hath gotten him the victory. The Lord hath made known his salvation; his righteousness hath he openly shewed in the sight of the heathen; he hath remembered his mercy and his truth toward the house of Israel; all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. Ps. cxviii. 1, 2, 3. He shall not ery, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street: a bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth. Is. xlii. 2, 3, 4. I have therefore whereof I may glory through Jesus Christ, in those things which pertain to God. For I will not dare to speak of any of those things

which Christ hath not wrought by me to make the Gentiles obedient by word and deed, through mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God, so that from Jerusalem, and round about unto Illyricum, I have fully preached the Gospel of Christ. Ro. xv. 17, 18, 19. Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place. 2 Co. ii. 14. Though we walk in the flesh we do not war after the flesh (for the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty, through God, to the pulling down of strong holds) casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ. 2 Co. x. 3, 4, 5. And I saw (said John), and, behold, a white horse, and he that sat on him had a bow, and a crown was given unto him; and he went forth conquering and to conquer. Re. vi. 2. And I saw heaven opened, and, behold, a white horse: and he that sat upon him was called Faithful, and True; and in righteousness he doth judge and make war; and he was clothed in a vesture dipped in blood, and his name is called, The Word of God. And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, King of kings, and Lord of lords. Re. xix. 11. 13. 16.

21 In his name.] In that day there shall be a Root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people, To it shall the Gentiles seek. Is. xi. 10. There shall be a Root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles, in him shall the Gentiles trust. Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost. Ro. xv. 12, 13. In "whom" ("Jesus") we also have obtained an inheritance; that we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ; in whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the Gospel of your salvation; in whom also after that ye believed ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise. Ep. i. 12, 13. Now is (the mystery) made manifest to "his" ("Christ's") saints; to whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. Col. i. 26, 27.

22 Was brought unto him.] See chap. ix. 32. Unclean spirits, when they saw him, fell down before him, and cried, saying, Thou art the Son of God. Mar. iii. 11. And he was casting out a devil, and it was dumb. And it came to pass when the devil was gone out, the dumb spake; and the people wondered. Lu xi. 14.

7 possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, 23 insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw. And all

the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David? 24 But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not 25 cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils. And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or 26 house divided against itself shall not stand; And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom

And he healed him.] And straightway his (the deaf man's) ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain. And he charged them that they should tell no man, but the more he charged them so much the more a great deal they published it; and were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well; he maketh both the deaf to hear and the dumb to speak. Mar. vii. 35, 36, 37. And one of the multitude answered and said, Master, I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit; and wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him, and he foameth and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out, and they could not. He answereth him and saith, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? Bring him unto me. And they brought him unto him: and when he saw him, straightway the spirit tare him, and he fell on the ground and wallowed, foaming. And he asked his father, How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child! and oft-times it hath cast him into the fire and into the waters to destroy him. But if thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us. Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth. And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe: help thou mine unbelief. When Jesus saw that the people came running to gether, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee come out of him, and enter no more into him. And the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him. And he was as one dead, insomuch that many said, He is dead: but Jesus took him by the hand, and lifted him up, and he arose. Mar. ix. 17-27.

Blind and dumb both spake and saw.] O Lord, open thou my lips, and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise. Ps. li. 15. In that day (the day of the Lord) shall the deaf hear the words of the Book, and the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity, and out of darkness. Is. xxix. 18. The eyes of them that see shall not be dim; and the ears of them that hear shall hearken. The heart also of the rash shall understand knowledge,

and the tongue of the stammerers shall be ready to speak plainly. Is. xxxii. 3, 4. Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped: then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing; for in the wilder ness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert. Is. xxxv. 5, 6. I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to open their (the Gentiles') eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me. Ac. xxvi. 18.

23 The people were amazed.] See chap. ix. 33. Great multitudes came unto him, having with them those that were lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and cast them down at Jesus' feet, and he healed them, insomuch that the people wondered, &c. Mat. xv. 30, 31.

Is not this the Son of David?] See chap. ix. 27. and com. Come see a man which told me all things that ever I did (said the woman of Samaria); is not this the Christ? John iv. 29. See chap. xx. 30.

24 When the Pharisees heard it.] See chap. ix. 34. and com.

25 Jesus knew their thoughts.] See chap. ix. 4, and com. I, the Lord, search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man accord ing to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings. Je. xvii. 10. For, lo, he that formeth the mountains and createth the wind, and declareth unto man what is his thought, that maketh the morning darkness, and treadeth upon the high places of the earth, the Lord the God of hosts is his name. Am. iv. 13. What man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? Even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. 1 Co. ii. 11.

26 His kingdom stand.] Now is the judg ment of this world; now shall the prince of this world be cast out. John xii. 31. Hereafter I will not talk much with you; for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me. John xiv. 30. When he (the Holy Ghost) is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: of judgment, because the prince of this world

stand? And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your 27 children cast them out? therefore they shall be your judges. But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom 28 of God is come unto you. Or else how can one enter into a 29

is judged. John xvi. 8. 11. If our Gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost; in whom the God of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious Gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. 2 Co. iv. 3, 4. (Thanks unto God) who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son. Col. i. 13. We know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness. 1 John v. 19. And he (the star which fell from heaven) opened the bottomless pit, and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth; and they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue, Apollyon. Re. ix. 1, 2. 11. And the great dragon was cast out (by Michael and his angels), that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. Re. xii. 9. The fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness, and they gnawed their tongues for pain. Re. xvi. 10. I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit, and a great chain in his hand, and he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, and cast him into the bottomless pit, &c. Re. xx. 1, 2, 3.

us.

27 By whom do your children cast them out?] Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, and he followeth not us, and we forbade him, because he followeth not There is no man which shall do a miracle in my name (said Jesus) that can lightly speak evil of me. Mar. ix. 38, 39. And John (the apostle) answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, and we forbade him, because he followeth not us. And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not; for he that is not against us, is for us. Lu. ix. 49, 50. And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore shall they be your judges. Lu. xi. 19. Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus, whom Paul preacheth. And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so. And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know, but who are ye? And the man in whom the evil

spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. Ac. xix. 13–16.

They shall be your judges.] See verse 41, 42. Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee thou wicked servant (said the nobleman in the parable), thou knewest that I was an austere man, taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow. Lu. xix. 22. As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten; be zealous therefore, and repent. Re. iii. 19.

28 I cast out devils by the Spirit of God.] See verse 18. In my name (said Jesus) shall they cast out devils. Mar. xvi. 17. If I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you. Lu. xi. 20. (Jesus of Nazareth) who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil, for God was with him, Ac. x. 38.

Then the kingdom of God is come, &c.] See chap. vi. 33. The publicans and harlots (said Jesus to the priests and elders) go into the kingdom of God before you. Therefore I say unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof. Mat. xxi. 31, 43. Unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder; and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice, from henceforth even for ever; the zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this. Is. ix. 6, 7. In the days of these kings (seen in the vision of Nebuchadnezzar) shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces, and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever. Da. ii. 44. And there was given "him" ("the Son of man"), dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom, that which shall not be destroyed.
