believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the self-same hour. And when Jesus was come into Peter's house, 14 he saw his wife's mother laid, and sick of a fever. And he touched 15 her hand, and the fever left her: and she arose, and ministered unto them. When the even was

And his servant was healed.] Then enquired he (the nobleman of Capernaum) of them (his servants) the hour when he (his son who lay sick) began to amend. And they said unto him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him. So the father knew that it was at the same hour in the which Jesus said unto him, Thy son liveth. John iv, 52, 53.

14 Into Peter's house.] See verse 20. When he (Peter) was come into the house, Jesus prevented him, saying, What thinkest thou Simon? Of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? Of their own children, or of strangers? Peter saith unto him, Of strangers. Mat. xvii. 25, 26. When they were come out of the synagogue, they entered into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. But Simon's wife's mother lay sick of a fever, and anon they tell him of her. And he came and took her by the hand, and lifted her up; and immediately the fever left her, and she ministered unto them. Mar. i. 29, 30, 31. And he (Jesus) arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon's house. And Simon's wife's mother was taken with a great fever; and they besought him for her. And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she arose, and ministered unto them. Lu. iv. 38, 39.

Wife's mother laid.] Have we not power to lead about a sister, a wife, as well as other apostles, and as the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas? 1 Co. ix. 5. A bishop must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach, &c. 1 Ti. iii. 2. In the latter times some shall depart from the faith, forbidding to marry, &c. 1 Ti. iv. 3. Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled. He. xiii. 4.

15 Touched her hand.] See verse 3. Behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years came behind him (Jesus), and touched the hem of his garment. And when two blind men followed him, crying and saying, Thou Son of David have mercy on us. Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto

you.

Mat. ix. 20. 27. 29. And (they that were diseased) besought him, that they might only touch the hem of his garment, and as many as touched were made perfectly whole. Mat. xiv. 36. And Jesus had compassion on them (the two blind men), and touched their eyes, and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him. Mat. xx. 34.

come, they brought unto him 16

And it came to pass as they (the Israelites upon the invasion of the Moabites) were burying a man, that behold, they spied a band of men, and they cast the man into the sepulchre of Elisha, and when the man was let down and touched the bones of Elisha, he revived, and stood up on his feet. 2 Ki. xiii. 21. And "he" ("the seraph," said Isaiah) laid "it" ("the live coal") upon my mouth, and said, Lo this hath touched thy lips, and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sins purged. Is. vi. 7. And Jesus, moved with compassion, put forth his hand, and touched him (the leper), and saith unto him, I will, be thou clean. Mar. i. 41. And he (Jesus) put "them" ("the friends" of Jairus' daughter) all out, and took her by the hand, and called saying, Maid, arise. Lu. viii. 54, And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul; so that from his body were brought unto the sick, handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them. Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth. Ac. xix. 11. 13.

And ministered unto them.] And he stood over her (Simon's wife's mother), and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she arose, and ministered unto them. Lu. iv. 39. Jesus, six days before the passover, came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead. There they made him a supper, and Martha served; but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him. Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hairs: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment. John xii. 1, 2, 3.

16 The even was come.] And at even, when the sun did set, they brought unto him all that were diseased, and them that were possessed with devils. And all the city was gathered together at the door; and he healed many that were sick of divers diseases, and cast out many devils; and suffered not the devils to speak, because they knew him. Mar. i. 32, 33, 34. Now, when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him, and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them. Lu. iv. 40.

They brought unto him.] See chap. iv. 24. and com. And behold, they brought to him

many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits 17 with his word, and healed all that were sick: That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself 18 took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses. Now when Jesus saw great multitudes about him, he gave commandment to depart 19 unto the other side. And a certain Scribe came, and said unto

a man sick of the palsy lying on a bed. Mat. ix. 2. And they come unto him bringing one sick of the palsy, which was borne of four. Mar. ii. 3. They brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them. Ac. v. 15.

And he cast out the spirits.] Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind and dumb, and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw. Mat. xii. 22. Jesus rebuked "him" ("the unclean spirit'), saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him: and they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? What new doctrine is this? For with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him. Mar. i. 25, 26, 27. And he healed many that were sick of divers diseases, and cast out many devils, and suffered not the devils to speak, because they knew him. Mar. i. 34. Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit (said Jesus). Mar.

v. 8.

When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee come out of him, and enter no more into him. Mar. ix. 25. From his (Paul's) body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them. Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth. And there were seven sons of one Sceva a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so. And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye? And the man in whom the evil spirit was, leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. Ac. xix. 13-16.

And healed all that were sick.] Jesus went forth and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick. Mat. xiv. 14. If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the Lord thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee which I have brought upon the Egyptians. For I

Himself took our infirmities.] Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. Is. liii. 4. Christ also suffered for us, who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness; by whose stripes ye were healed. 1 Pe. ii. 24.

18 Saw great multitudes.] See verse 1. and com. In the morning, rising up a great while before day, he (Jesus) went out and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed; and Simon and they that were with him followed after him, and when they had found him, they said unto him, All men seek for thee. And he said unto them, Let us go into the next towns that I may preach there also; for therefore came I forth. Mar. i. 35-38. And when it was day he departed, and went into a desert place; and the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed him, that he should not depart from them. And he said unto them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also; for therefore am I sent. L. iv. 42, 43. When Jesus perceived that they would come and take him by force to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone. John vi. 15.

Unto the other side.] And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitude away. Mat. xiv. 22. The same day, when the even was come, he saith unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side. Mar. iv. 35. And when Jesus was passed over again by ship unto the other side, much people gathered unto him, and he was nigh unto the sea. Mar. v. 21. Straightway he (Jesus) constrained his disciples to get into the ship, and to go to the other side before unto Bethsaida, while he sent away the people. Mar. vi. 45. And he (Jesus) left them, and entering into the ship again, departed to the other side. Mar. viii. 13. Now it came to pass on a certain day, that he went into a ship with his disciples; and he said unto them, Let us go over unte the other side of the lake. Lu. viii. 22.

19 A certain Scribe.] Ezra went up from Babylon, and he was a ready scribe in the law of Moses, which the Lord God of Israel

him, Master, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest. And 20 Jesus saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head. And another of his disciples said unto him, Lord, suffer me first 21

had given. Ezr. vii. 6. The Scribe said unto "him" ("Jesus"), Well, Master, thou hast said the truth; for there is one God, and there is none other but he, and to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole burnt-offerings and sacrifices; and when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that durst ask him any question. Mar. xii. 32-34. And it came to pass, that as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest; and Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head. Lu. ix. 57, 58. Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? 1 Co. i. 20.

I will follow thee.] There went great multitudes with him, and he turned, and said unto them, If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple: and whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple; whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple. Lu. xiv. 25-27. 33. Lord, I am ready (said Peter) to go with thee, both into prison and to death. And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? and they said nothing. Lu. xxii. 33. 35. Lord, whither goest thou (said Peter to Jesus)? Jesus answered him, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now, but thou shalt follow me afterwards. Peter said unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thy sake: Jesus answered him, Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake? verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice. John xiii. 36, 37, 38.

20 And the birds of the air have nests.] Yea, the sparrow hath found an house, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, even thine altars, O Lord, of hosts, my King, and my God. Ps. lxxxiv. 3. Where birds make their nests (in the trees of the Lord), as for the stork, the fir trees are her house. Ps. civ. 17.

The Son of man hath not where to lay his head.] I am poor and needy; yet the Lord thinketh upon me: thou art my help and my deliverer; make no tarrying, O my God. Ps.

3.

xl. 17. I am poor and sorrowful: let thy salvation, O God, set me up on high. Ps. lxix. 29. I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me. Ps. cix. 22. He shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground; he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him; he is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and we hid, as it were, our faces from him: he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Is. liii. 2, "She" ("Mary") brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. And this (said the angel of the Lord) shall be a "sign" unto you ("that a Saviour is born"), ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And "they" ("the shepherds") came with haste, and found Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. Lu. ii. 7. 12. 16. And Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others which ministered unto him of their substance, were with him (Jesus). Lu. viii. 3. Ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich. 2 Co. viii. 9.

21 Another of his disciples, &c.] And he (Jesus) said unto another (of his disciples), Follow me; but he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead; but go thou and preach the kingdom of God. And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee, but let me first go bid them farewell which are at home at my house and Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God. Lu. ix. 59-62.

Suffer me first to go and bury my father.] Every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life. Mat. xix. 29. He that is the high priest among his brethren, upon whose head the anointing oil was poured, and that is consecrated to put on the garments, shall not uncover his head, nor rend his clothes: neither shall he go in to any dead body, nor defile himself for his father, or for his mother; neither shall he go out of the sanctuary, nor profane the sanctuary of his God; for the crown of the anointing oil of his God is upon him: I am the Lord. Le. xxi. 10, 11, 12. All the days that he (the Nazarite) separateth

22 to go and bury my father. But Jesus said unto him, Follow me ; 23 and let the dead bury their dead. And when he was entered into 24 a ship, his disciples followed him. And, behold, there arose a

great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with 25 the waves: but he was asleep. And his disciples came to him,

himself unto the Lord he shall come at no dead body: he shall not make himself unclean for his father or for his mother, for his brother or for his sister, when they die; because the consecration of his God is upon his head. Nu. vi. 6. 7. Of Levi he (Moses) said, Let thy Thummim and thy Urim be with thy holy One, whom thou didst prove at Massah, and with whom thou didst strive at the waters of Meribah, who said unto his father and to his mother, I have not seen him; neither did he acknowledge his brethren, nor knew his own children, for they have observed thy word, and kept thy covenant; they shall teach Jacob thy judgments, and Israel thy law: they shall put incense before thee, and whole burntsacrifice upon thine altar. De. xxxiii. 8, 9, 10, He (Elisha) left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and said, Let me, I pray thee, kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow thee; and he said unto him, Go back again, for what have I done to thee? And he returned back from him, and took a yoke of oxen, and slew them, and boiled their flesh with the instruments of the oxen, and gave unto the people, and they did eat; then he arose, and went after Elijah, and ministered unto him. 1 Ki. xix. 20, 21. Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying, This people say, The time is not come, the time that the Lord's house should be built. Hag. i. 2. Henceforth know we no man after the flesh; yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more. 2 Co. v. 14.

22 Follow me.] See chap. iv. 19. and com. And let the dead bury their dead.] It was meet (said the father of the prodigal to his elder son) that we should make merry and be glad, for this thy brother was dead and is alive again, and was lost, and is found. Lu. xv. 32. You hath he (Jesus) quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins: but God, even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ (by grace ye are saved). Ep. ii. 1.5. Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. Ep. v. 14. You, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses. Col. ii. 13. She that liveth in pleasure, is dead while she liveth. 1 Ti. v. 6.

23 Entered into a ship.] He (Jesus) entered into a ship, and passed over, and came into his own city. Mat. ix. 1. And when "they" ("the disciples") had sent away the multitude,

they took him even as he was in the ship. Mar. iv. 36. Now it came to pass on a certain day, that he went into a ship with his disciples, and he said unto them, Let us go over unto the other side of the lake. Lu. viii. 22.

24 There arose a great tempest.] They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters; these see the works of the Lord and his wonders in the deep, for he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind, which lifteth up the waves thereof; they mount up to the heaven, they go down again to the depths; their soul is melted because of trouble; they reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wit's end. Ps. cvii. 23-27. O thou (the Church of Christ) afflicted, tossed with tempest, and not comforted; behold, I will lay thy stones with fair colours, and lay thy foundations with sapphires. Is. liv. 11. The Lord sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken: then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them; but Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship, and he lay, and was fast asleep. Jon. i. 4, 5. There arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full: and he (Jesus) was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish? Mar. iv. 37, 38. Not long after (they, Paul and his company, had sailed close to Crete) there arose against it a tempestuous wind called Euroclydon. Ac. xxvii. 14. Thrice was I (Paul) beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep; in journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren. 2 Co. xi. 25, 26.

But he was asleep.] As they (Jesus and his disciples) sailed, he fell asleep; and there caine down a storm of wind on the lake, and they were filled with water, and were in jeopardy. Lu. viii. 23. And when even was now come, his disciples went down into the sea, and entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward Capernaum, and it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them; and the sen arose by reason of a great wind that blew. John vi. 16, 17, 18. Now Jesus loved Martha

and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish. And he saith 26 unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great

and her sister, and Lazarus; when he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was. Our friend Lazarus sleepeth (said he to his disciples), but I go that I may awake him out of sleep. Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well. Howbeit Jesus spake of his death, but they thought that he had spoken of taking rest in sleep. Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead; and I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe: nevertheless, let us go unto him. John xi. 5-15.

25 And awoke him.] Why standest thou afar off, O Lord; why hidest thou thyself in times of trouble? Ps. x. 1. Yea, for thy sake are we killed, all the day long we are counted as sheep for the slaughter. Awake, why sleepest thou, O Lord? arise, cast us not off for ever? Ps. xliv, 22, 23. Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of the Lord: awake as in the ancient days, in the generations of old, Art thou not it that cut Rahab, and wounded the dragon? Art thou not it which hath dried the sea, the waters of the great deep; that hath made the depths of the sea a way for the ransomed to pass over. Is. li. 9, 10. He (Jesus) was in the hinder part of the ship asleep on a pillow; and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish? And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still; and the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. Mar. iv. 38, 39. And "they" ("the disciples") came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, Master, we perish! Then he arose, and rebuked the wind, and the raging of the water; and they ceased, and there was a calm. Lu. viii. 24.

Save us we perish.] Asa (the king) cried unto the Lord his God, and said, Lord, it is nothing with thee to help, whether with many or with them that have no power; help us, O Lord our God, for we rest on thee, and in thy name we go against this multitude; O Lord, thou art our God, let not man prevail against thee. 2 Ch. xiv. 11. O our God (said king Jehoshaphat), wilt thou not judge them? for we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do, but our eyes are upon thee. 2 Ch. xx. 12. The ship-master came to him (Jonah), and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper: arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not. Jon. i. 6. See chap. xiv. 30.

26 Why are ye fearful, &c.] See Mat. vi.

30. Fear thou not (Israel), for I am with thee; be not dismayed, for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee, yea, I will help thee,

yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness; fear not, thou worm Jacob, and ye men of Israel, I will help thee, saith the Lord, and thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel. Is. xli. 10. 14. Where is your faith? And they, being afraid, wondered, saying one to another, What manner of man is this; for he commandeth even the winds and water, and they obey him. Lu. viii. 25. He (Abraham) staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God. Ro. iv. 20. See chap. xiv. 31.

And rebuked the winds and the sea.] See verse 27. Who shut up the sea with doors, when it brake forth as if it had issued out of the womb? when I made the cloud the garment thereof, and thick darkness a swaddling band for it, and brake up for it my decreed place, and set bars and doors, and said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further, and here shall thy proud waves be stayed. Job xxxviii. 8-11. O God of our salvation, which stilleth the noise of the sea, the noise of their waves, and the tumult of the people. Ps. lxv. 7. Thou (O Lord) rulest the raging of the sea; when the waves thereof arise thou stillest them. Ps. lxxxix. 9. The floods have lifted up, O Lord, the floods have lifted up their voice; the floods lift up their waves. The Lord on high is mightier that the noise of many waters; yea, than the mighty waves of the sea. Ps. xciii. 3, 4. Thou (O Lord) coveredst it (the earth) with the deep, as with a garment; the waters stood above the mountains; at thy rebuke they fled; at the voice of thy thunder they hasted away. They go up by the mountains; they go down by the valleys, unto the place which thou hast founded for them. Thou hast set a bound that they may not pass over: that they turn not again to cover the earth. Ps. civ. 6-9. They (that go down to the sea in ships) cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses; he maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still; then are they glad, because they be quiet so he bringeth them to their desired haven. Ps. cvii. 28, 29, 30. The sea saw it and fled; Jordan was driven back, the mountains skipped like rams, and the little hills like lambs; what ailed thee, O thou sea, that thou fledest? thou Jordan, that thou wast driven back; ye mountains, that ye skipped like rams, and ye little hills, like lambs? Tremble thou earth at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob. Ps. cxiv. 3-7. When he established the clouds above; when he strengthened the fountains of the deep; when he gave to the sea his decree, that the
