the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

bread. Ps. xxxvii. 3. 18, 19. 25. For the Lord God is a sun and shield. The Lord God will give grace and glory; no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly. O Lord of hosts, blessed is the man that trusteth in thee. Ps. lxxxiv. 11, 12. But he (who has left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake and the Gospel's) shall receive an hundred-fold now in this time, and in the world to come eternal life. Mar. x. 30. Verily I say unto you, there is no man that hath left house, or parents, or brethren, or wife, or children, for the kingdom of God's sake, who shall not receive manifold more in this present time, and in the world to come life everlasting. Lu. xviii. 29, 30. If God be for us, who can be against us? Ro. viii. 31. Whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come, all are yours. 1 Co. iii. 22. Godliness is profitable unto all things, having the promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come. 1. Ti. iv. 8.

34 No thought for the morrow.] See verses 11. 25. and com. When "they" (the "children of Israel") did mete "it" (the "manna" with an omer, he that gathered much had nothing over, and he that gathered little had no lack; they gathered every man according to his eating. And Moses said, Let no man leave of it until the morning. Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto Moses, but some of them left of it until the morning, and it bred worms, and stank and Moses was wroth with them. Ex. xvi. 18-20. It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning. La. iii. 22, 23.

For the morrow shall take thought.] And of Asher, "he" ("Moses") said, Thy shoes shall be iron and brass; and as thy days, so shall thy strength be. De. xxxiii. 25. It shall be (said the word of the Lord to Elijah), that thou shalt drink of the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee: so he went and did according unto the word of the Lord, for he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan. And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening, and he drank of the brook. 1 Ki. xvii. 4. 6. The barrel of meal shall not waste (said Elijah to the widow of Zarephath), neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that

the Lord sendeth rain upon the earth. And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat many days. And the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the Lord which he spake by Elijah. 1 Ki. xvii. 14-16. Elisha said, Hear ye (of Samaria) the word of the Lord; thus saith the Lord, To-morrow by this time shall a measure of fine flour be sold for a shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel in the gate of Samaria; then a lord on whose hand the king leaned, answered the man of God, and said, Behold, if the Lord will make windows in heaven might this thing be? And he said, Behold, thou shalt see it with thine eyes, but shalt not eat thereof. 2 Ki. vii. 1, 2. Give us day by day our daily bread. Lu. xi. 3. Be content with such things as ye have, for he hath said, I will never leave thee nor forsake thee. So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man can do unto me. He. xiii. 5, 6.

Sufficient unto the day, &c.] Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you; let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. John xiv. 27. These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation; but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. John xvi. 33. "They" ("Paul and Barnabas") returned again to Lystra and to Iconium and to Antioch, confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God. Ac. xiv. 22. No man should be moved by these afflictions, for yourselves know that we are appointed thereunto. 1 The. iii. 3, 4,

CHAP. VII-1 Judge not.] Hear the word of the Lord, ye that tremble at his word your brethren that hated you, that cast you out for my name's sake, said, Let the Lord be glorified; but he shall appear to your joy, and they shall be ashamed. Is. lxvi. 5. Thou also (Jerusalem), which hast judged thy "sisters" ("Sodom and Samaria"), bear thine own shame, for the sins that thou hast committed more abominable than they: they are more righteous than thou: yea, be thou confounded also, and bear thy shame, in that thou hast justified thy sisters. When I shall bring again their captivity, the captivity of Sodom

2 ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it 3 shall be measured to you again. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that

and her daughters, and the captivity of Samaria and her daughters, then will I bring again the captivity of thy captives in the midst of them. That thou mayest bear thine own shame, and mayest be confounded in all that thou hast done, in that thou art a comfort unto them. When thy sisters, Sodom and her daughters, shall return to their former estate, and Samaria and her daughters shall return to their former estate: then thou and thy daughters shall return to your former estate; for thy sister Sodom was not mentioned by thy mouth in the day of thy pride. Ex. xvi. 52-56. Judge not, and ye shall not be judged. Lu. vi. 37. Thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest; for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself, for thou that judgest doest the same things. But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things. Ro. ii. 1, 2. Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth: for God hath received him. Who art thou that judgest another man's servant? To his own master he standeth or falleth; yea, he shall be holden up, for God is able to make him stand. But why dost thou judge thy brother? Or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. For it is written, As I live saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God, so then every one of us shall give account of himself to God. Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumbling-block, or an occasion to fall, in his brother's way. Ro. xiv. 3, 4. 10–13. With me it is a very small thing that I should be judged of you, or of man's judgment; yea, I judge not mine own self. For I know nothing by myself; yet am I not hereby justified; but he that judgeth me is the Lord. Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts; and then shall every man have praise of God. 1 Co. iv. 3-5. My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation. Ja. iii. 1. Speak not evil one of another, brethren; he that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law. But if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge; there is one lawgiver who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another? Ja. iv. 11, 12.

2 With what judgment ye judge, &c.]

Adoni-bezek said, Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered their meat under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. Ju. i. 7. With the merciful thou wilt shew thyself merciful, with an upright man thou wilt shew thyself upright. With the pure thou wilt shew thyself pure; and with the froward thou wilt shew thyself froward. Ps. xviii. 25, 26. Remember, O Lord, the children of Edom, in the day of Jerusalem; who said, Rase it, rase it, even to the foundation thereof. O daughter of Babylon, who art to be destroyed, happy shall he be that rewardeth thee as thou hast served us. Ps. cxxxvii. 7, 8. I will render unto Babylon, and to all the inhabitants of Chaldea, all their evil that they have done in Zion in your sight, saith the Lord. Je. li. 24. The day of the Lord is near upon all the heathen; as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee; thy reward shall thine own head. Ob. 15. With what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you. Mar. iv. 24. With the same measure that ye mete withal, it shall be measured to you again. Lu. vi. 38. He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly, and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. 2 Co. ix. 6. It is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you; and to you who are troubled, rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven, with his mighty angels. 2 The. i. 6, 7. He shall have judgment without mercy that hath shewed no mercy, and mercy rejoiceth against judgment. Ja. ii. 13. Reward "her" ("Babylon") even as she rewarded you, and double unto her double according to her works; in the cup which she hath filled, fill to her double. Re. xviii. 6.

3 Why beholdest thou the mote.] Why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Lu. vi. 41. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself; God, I thank thee that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even this publican. Lu. xviii. 11.

But considerest not the beam.] David's anger was greatly kindled against the man (who dressed the ewe lamb of the poor man in Nathan's parable), and he said to Nathan, As the Lord liveth, the man that hath done this thing shall surely die. And he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity. 2 Sa. xii. 5, 6. A prophet of the Lord was there, whose name was Oded: and he went out before the host that came to Samaria, and said unto them, Behold, because the Lord God of your

is in thine own eye? Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let 4 me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of 5 thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye. Give not that which is holy unto 6

fathers was wroth with Judah, he hath delivered them into your hand, and ye (the people of Israel) have slain them in a rage that reacheth up unto heaven. And now ye purpose to keep under the children of Judah and Jerusalem for bondmen and bondwomen unto you, but are there not with you, even with you sins against your God? 2 Ch. xxviii. 9, 10. But unto the wicked God saith, What hast thou to do, to declare my statutes, or that thou shouldest take my covenant in thy mouth: Seeing thou hatest instruction, and castest my words behind thee? When thou sawest a thief, then thou consentedst with him, and hast been partaker with adulterers; thou givest thy mouth to evil, and thy tongue frameth deceit. Thou sittest and speakest against thy brother, thou slanderest thine own mother's son. These things hast thou done, and I kept silence. Thou thoughtest that I was altogether such an one as thyself. But I will reprove thee, and set them in order before thine eyes. Ps. 1. 16-21. He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her (the woman taken in adultery): and again he (Jesus), stooped down, and wrote on the ground. And they which heard it being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest even unto the last; and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. John viii. 7-9. Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual restore such an one in the spirit of meekness, considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Ga. vi. 1.

5 Thou hypocrite.] Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites. Mat. xxii. 18. Woe unto you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer; therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation. Mat. xxiii. 14. Ye hy pocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky, and of the earth; but how is it that ye do not discern this time. Lu. xii. 56. See chap. xvi. 3.

First cast out the beam.] Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me: cast me not away from thy presence, and take not thy holy Spirit from me: restore unto me the joy of thy salvation, and uphold me with thy free Spirit: then will I teach transgressors thy ways, and sinners shall be converted unto thee. Ps. li. 9-13. Ye will surely say unto

me this proverb (said Jesus), Physician, heal thyself. Lu. iv. 23. Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother's eye. Lu. vi. 42. The evil spirit said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye (the Jewish exorcists)? Ac. xix. 15.

6 That which is holy unto the dogs.] Whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house, or city, shake off the dust of your feet. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment, than for that city. Mat. x. 14, 15. It is not meet to take the children's bread and to cast it to dogs (said Jesus to the woman of Canaan). Mat. xv. 26. He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame; and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth himself a blot. Reprove not a scorner lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man and he will love thee. Pr. ix. 7, 8. Speak not in the ears of a fool, for he will despise the wisdom of thy words. Pr. xxiii. 9. As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly. Pr. xxvi. 11. When the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy, and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming. Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you; but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life: Lo, we turn to the Gentiles, for so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation to the ends of the earth. Ac. xiii. 45, 46, 47. Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision. Phi. iii. 2.

It is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost; and have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come: if they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance, seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame. He. vi. 6. He that despised Moses' law died without mercy, under two or three witnesses. Of how much sorer punishment suppose ye shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant wherewith he was sanctified an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?

the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine; lest they trample 7 them under their feet, and turn again and rend you. Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be

He. x. 28, 29. But it is happened unto "them" ("those who relapsed") according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again, and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire. 2 Pe. ii. 22. See chap. xv. 26.

Cast ye your pearls.] As a jewel of gold in a swine's snout, so is a fair woman which is without discretion. Pr. xi. 22.

And turn again and rend you.] They (that were bidden to the marriage feast) made light of it, and went their ways; one to his farm, another to his merchandise: and the remnant took his servants, and entreated them spitefully, and slew them. Mat. xxii. 5, 6. "Then" ("the time of Christ's coming") shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. Mat. xxiv. 10. Of the Jews five time received I forty stripes save one thrice was I beaten with rods (said Paul), once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep; in journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren. 2 Co. xi. 24, 25, 26. Alexander the coppersmith did me much evil: the Lord reward him according to his works. Of whom be thou ware also, for he hath greatly withstood our words. 2 Ti. iv. 14, 15.

7 And it shall be given you.] See verse 11. All things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive. Mat. xxi. 22. In Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night, and God said, Ask what I shall give thee. 1 Ki. iii. 5. Lord, thou hast heard the desire of the humble; thou wilt prepare their heart; thou wilt cause thine ear to hear. Ps. x. 17. Call upon me in the day of trouble, I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me. Ps. 1. 15. Thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive, and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee. Ps. lxxxvi. 5. The Lord is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth; he will fulfil the desire of them that fear him; he also will hear their cry, and will save them. Ps. cxlv. 18, 19. Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is

near.

Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts, and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy on him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. Is. lv. 6, 7. Then shall "ye" (" the captive Jews") call upon me (saith the Lord), and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you: and ye shall seek me and find me when ye shall search

for me with all your hearts. Je. xxix. 12, 13. Call upon me and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not. Je. xxxiii. 3. What things soever ye desire when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them. Mar. xi. 24. Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh, receiveth; and he that seeketh, findeth; and to him that knocketh, it shall be opened. If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him? Lu. xi. 9, 10. 13. Men ought always to pray and not to faint. La xviii. 1. If thou knewest the gift of God (said Jesus to the woman of Samaria), and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink, thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. Joka iv. 10. Whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son: if ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it. John xiv. 13, 14. If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you; ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you. John xv. 7. 16. In that day (that ye shall not see me) ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he shall give it you. Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full. John xvi. 23, 24. If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, who giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not, and it shall be given him: but let him ask in faith, nothing wavering: for he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea, driven with the wind, and tossed. Ja. i. 5, 6. The prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up. Ja. v. 15. Whatsoever we ask we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. 1 John iii. 22. This is the confidence that we have in him, that if we ask any thing according to bis will, he heareth us; and if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him. 1 John v. 14, 15. Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that “thou" (“the angel of the Church of Laodicea") art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:

opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he 8 that seeketh, findeth; and to him that knocketh, it shall be opened. Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he 9 give him a stone? Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? 10 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your 11

I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eye-salve, that thou mayest see. Re. iii. 17, 18. See chap. xxi. 22.

Seek and ye shall find.] See Mat. vi. 33. and com. The wicked through the pride of his countenance will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts. Ps. x. 4. When thou saidst, Seek ye my face, my heart said unto thee, Thy face, Lord, will I seek. Ps. xxvii. 8. The humble shall see this, and be glad; and your heart shall live that seek God. Ps. lxix. 32. Let all those that seek thee rejoice, and be glad in thee. Ps. lxx. 4. Glory ye in his holy name; let the heart of them rejoice that seek the Lord; seek the Lord and his strength; seek his face evermore. Ps. cv. 3, 4. Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, and that seek him with the whole heart. Ps. exix. 2. Those that seek me early shall find me. Pr. viii. 17. I will rise now and go about the city; in the streets and in the broad ways I will seek him (Christ) whom my soul loveth: I sought him, but I found him not. Can. iii. 2. Thus saith the Lord unto the house of Israel, Seek ye me and ye shall live. Am. v. 4. (God) who will render to every man according to his deeds, to them, who, by patient continuance in well-doing, seek for glory, and honour, and immortality, eternal life. Ro. ii. 6, 7. There is none that understandeth (as it is written); there is none that seeketh after God. Ro. iii. 11. He that cometh to God, must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. He. xi. 6.

Knock and it shall be opened.] Strive to enter in at the strait gate. When once the master of the house is risen up, and hath shut to the door, and ye begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer and say unto you, I know ye not whence ye are; then shall ye begin to say, &c. Lu. xiii. 24,

25.

8 Every one that asketh receiveth.] Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou Son of David (said the woman of Canaan), my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil: but he answered her not a word. Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me but he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children's bread and cast it to dogs. And she said, Truth, Lord; yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their master's table.

Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith; be it unto thee even as thou wilt: and her daughter was made whole from that very hour. Mat. xv. 22, 23. 25-28. Manasseh was twelve years old when he began to reign, and he reigned fifty and five years in Jerusalem, but did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord, like unto the abominations of the heathen, whom the Lord had cast out before the children of Israel. His prayer also, and how God was entreated of him, and all his sins, and his trespass, and the places wherein he built high places, before he was humbled: Behold, they are written among the sayings of the seers. 2 Ch. xxxiii. 1, 2. 19. I am the Lord thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt; open thy mouth wide and I will fill it: he should have fed them also with the finest of the wheat; and with honey out of the rock should I have satisfied thee. Ps. lxxxi. 10. 16. And (Jonah) said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the Lord, and he heard me: out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice. Jon. ii. 2. Let man and beast be covered with sackcloth (in Nineveh), and cry mightily unto God; yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands. Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not. And God saw their works, that they (the Ninevites) turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil that he had said that he would do unto them, and he did it not. Jon. iii. 8, 9, 10. Lord, remember me (said the thief on the cross) when thou comest into thy kingdom. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To-day shalt thou be with me in Paradise. Lu. xxiii. 42, 43. the Lord said unto "him" (" Ananias of Damascus"), Arise, and go into the street which is called Straight, and enquire in the house of Judas for one called Saul of Tarsus, for, behold, he prayeth. Ac. ix. 11.

And

9 What man is there of you, &c.] If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your heavenly Father give the holy Spirit to them that ask him. Lu. xi. 11, 12, 13.

11 Being evil, know how to give, &c.] God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the
