he realizes in all its importance the great fact, that while 'the world passeth away and the lust thereof, he that doeth the will of God abideth forever.' SOME THINGS WHICH I READ IN THE SCRIPTURES, COMPARED WITH SOME THINGS WHICH I DO NOT READ THERE. 1. I READ, 'There is ONE God.'-(1 Tim. ii. 5.) I believe it. I do not read, 'There are three Gods.' I do not believe it. it. 2. I read, 'God is ONE.'-(Gal. iii. 20.) I believe I do not read, 'In the Godhead there is a distinction, which affords grounds for the appellations of Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.' I do not believe it. 3. I read, 'The Lord our God is ONE Lord.'(Deut. vi. 4. Mark xii. 29.) I believe it. I do not read, 'In the Godhead there are three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, and these three are ONE.' I do not believe it. 4. I read, 'There is ONE God and Father of all ; who is above all, and through all, and in you all.'-(Eph. iv. 6.) I believe it. I do not read, God, acting in one mode, is called the Father; acting in another mode, is called the Son; and acting in a third mode, is called the Holy Ghost.' I do not believe it. 5. I read, I and my Father are one.'-(John x. 30.) I believe it. I also read a prayer of Christ for his disciples, that they may all be ONE; as thou, Father, art in me and I in thee, that they also may be ONE in us-and the glory which thou hast given me, I have given them; that they also may be ONE, even as we are ONE: I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in ONE.'-(John xvii. 21, 22, 23.) I believe that this prayer was fulfilled in his then present disciples, and is in the process of being fulfilled, now, every day, in those that 'believe through their word.' I do not read, that this ONENESS, for which he prayed, renders the disciples, either Christ, or God, or one another. I do not believe it. Neither do I read, that his own ONENESS with the Father renders him God. I do not believe it. 6. I read, 'One is your Father, which is in heaven.' (Mat. xxiii. 9.) I doubt not this is God. I believe it. I do not read, 'One is your Father, even Christ.' I do not believe it. 7. I read, To us, there is but ONE God, the FATHER, of whom are all things.'-(1 Cor. viii. 6.) I believe it. I do not read, 'There is one God, the Trinity.' I do not believe it. 6 8. I read, True worshippers shall worship the FATHER in spirit and in truth.'—(John iv. 23.) I believe it right so to worship. I do not read, that true worshippers shall worship any other object, person, distinction, or any thing else than the God and Father of the spirits of all flesh. I do not believe it right so to do. 9. I read When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven.'—(Luke xi. 2.) `I believe this to be the proper mode of prayer. I do not read, 'When ye pray, say, Jehovah-Jesus-Tri-une God, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,' or any kindred form of speech. I do not believe either of these to be fitting modes of prayer for those who would learn their religion of Jesus Christ. 10. I read, (the words of Christ concerning the day when he shall see his disciples again,) In that day ye shall ask ME nothing.'-(John xvii. 23.) I, then, believe it wrong to ask of him. I do not read any precept, elsewhere, doing away the force of this law. I count it violence to the law of Christ, to address prayer to him, in that glorified state in which he sees his disciples again. 11. I read, in connexion with the foregoing words of Christ, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you. Hitherto, have ye asked nothing in my name; ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.'-(John xvii. 23, 24.) This, then I believe to be the most proper mode of Christian prayer; to address God in the name of Christ. Happy is he, who obeys the rule of the Master; and who receives, in himself, the accomplishment of the subsequent promise! I do not read, 'Whatsoever ye shall ask ME, in my own name, I will give it you.' I do not believe it proper so to pray. 12. I read, 'God is LOVE.'-(1 John iv. 6.) I believe it. I do not read, 'God is ENMITY.' I do not believe it. 13. I read, God so LOVED the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosover believed in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.'-(John iii. 16.) I believe it. I do not read, that God so HATED the world that he required full satisfaction to his justice, before he would save the world. I do not believe it. 14. I read, The FATHER sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.'-(1 John iv. 14.) I believe it. I do not read, 'The Father sent himself to be the Saviour of the world.' I do not believe it. 15. I read, the words of Christ, 'I proceeded forth and came from GOD; neither came I of MYSELF, but HE sent me.'—(John viii. 42.) I believe it. 1 do not read that he proceeded forth from himSELF; or of himSELF; or that he sent himsELF. I do not believe it. 16. I read, 'Jesus knowing that the FATHER had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to GOD,'-(John xiii. 3.) acted accordingly. I believe that he did so come; and that he so went. I do not read, that he came from himSELF, and went to himsELF. I do not believe it. 17. I read, 'Jesus of Nazareth, which was a PROPHET, mighty in deed, and in word.'-(Luke xxiv. 19.) I believe that he was a prophet thus mighty. I do not read, 'Jesus of Nazareth, which was GOD.' I do not believe it. 18. I read, Jesus of Nazareth, a MAN approved of God-by miracles, and wonders, and signs, which God did by him.'—(Acts ii. 22.) I believe he was a man, so approved of God. I do not read, that he was a man approved of himSELF, by miracles, and wonders, and signs, which he wrought by his own power. I do not believe it. 19. I read, the words of Christ, 'I can, of mine own SELF, do nothing.'-(John v. 30.) I believe he could not. I do not read, that his miraculous energy was, originally his own. I do not believe it. 20. I read, the words of Christ, The Father which dwelleth in me, He doeth the works.'-(John xiv. 10.) I believe it. I do not read, 'I, which dwell in myself, do the works.' I do not believe it. 21. I read, GoD anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power.'—(Acts x. 38.) I believe it. I do not read, that Jesus so anointed himself. I do not believe it. 22. I read, 'This Jesus hath God raised up.'(Acts ii. 32.) I believe it. I do not read, that he raised himSELF up. I do not believe it. 23. I read, God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye (the Jews) slew, both Lord and Christ.(Acts ii. 36.) I believe it. I do not read, that Jesus made himsELF either Lord or Christ. I do not believe it. |
