Him pray to GOD for His murderers, and say, "Father, forgive them." Sinners in those days could see CHRIST hang in misery and die in shame, and yet not love Him, though he did no Sin, and died for Sinners. And where is the difference between Sinners then and Sinners now? Did not the Son of GOD die for us also? And do we not find thousands still, who hear of the love of CHRIST towards Mankind, but do not love Him, nor see any thing lovely in Him? There are thousands in this country, (are you one of them?) who love Him not, and keep not His sayings: as He Himself saith, "If a Man love Me, He will keep My words." "He that loveth Me not keepeth not My sayings." If we can see nothing to love in such a One as JESUS CHRIST, we shall see nothing to love in any thing belong. ing to GOD. is doing for us. "GOD commendeth His love towards us, in that while we were yet Sinners CHRIST died for us." If while we were yet Sinners the Almighty had sent His Son to destroy us, and to plunge us down quick into hell fire, and punish us according to our sins; if He had caused us long ago to perish for ever and to suffer the due reward of our deeds; then indeed He would have set before us a sight of His vengeance, His power, His justice, and it would be no wonder if we did not love Him, for in that way He would not have commended His love toward us: but would have manifested His wrath only. But when we hear of such a One as God loving us and sending His only Son to die for such as we, to bear our iniquities upon Himself, and to save our souls with a mighty deliverance; it is indeed enough to make us think highly of God's love to usward: and if so be we believe the report of the Gospel, if we really believe what we hear concerning

the great Salvation of Sinners through CHRIST, then we shall have love in our hearts toward the Father and to wards His dear Son. But remember this, that "no Man no Man can say that JESUS is the Lord but by the Holy Ghost." There are three holy Persons concerned in the Salvation of our Souls: God the Father, God the Son, and GOD the Holy Ghost, three Persons and One GOD of whom cometh Salvation. God the Father commendeth His love towards us (declares in His holy Gospel how excellent and tender and strong is His love) in that while we were yet Sinners, God the Son died for us. If we truly believe this, it is God the Holy Ghost who hath worked that belief in us and the evidences of our faith and tokens of our belief, and the fruits of the Holy Ghost will be brought forth in our lives. For true "Faith worketh by Love." But if we are afraid that we do not believe as we ought, if we desire to have faith, and to love the Lord JESUS

CHRIST, let us pray Him to send the Holy Ghost to help our ignorance and unbelief. But if we care not about these things, these mighty doings of the Almighty's love to a ruined world, if we neglect so great salvation, we shall not escape the Vengeance of the Lord in the Day of the Wrath of His Lamb.

SERMON V.

ON SUBJECTION TO RULERS.

ROMANS xiii. 1. and 6. following.

LET every soul be subject unto the higher powers.For there is no power but of GOD: the powers that be are ordained of GOD. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of GOD and they that resist shall receive unto themselves damnation. For rulers are not a terror unto good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? Do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same for he is the minister of GOD to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of GOD, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for consciences' sake. For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are GOD's ministers, attending continually upon this very thing. Render therefore, to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due: custom to whom custom fear to whom fear honour to whom honour.
