railing; He gave not reviling for reviling but returned soft words for savage, and kindness for cursings. He left His cause in the hands of God, who seeth and heareth and knoweth and judgeth all things. Will Will you hereafter be with JESUS where He now is? Then set him this day before your face: take up your cross daily and follow His steps, and you shall not fail to have a glorious and happy place in your Lord's kingdom.

6. There is yet another thing, besides not "answering again," concerning which I would now (secondly) exhort you namely, never (no, not even in the very smallest thing) never to "purloin:" that is, never, in any matter, or in any way, to take what does not belong to you. The Devil would willingly stir you up to defraud your masters. Satan has already prevailed with many a man to rob his master of gold, of silver, of corn, of wine, of clothes, and divers kinds of property.

He has tempted many a woman to rob her mistress of money, of trinkets, of jewels, of wearing apparel, and the like. O! be upon your guard, "A good name is better than great riches." There are many now in the world whose "good name" is lost through dishonesty; and yet once their character was blameless, their reputation clean and fair before men. It is written: "Let him who thinketh he standeth, take heed lest he fall." What a lovely ornament to a servant is "good fidelity." It is an ornament which Servants must shew at all times and in all places. It is like a bright rich sparkling jewel upon a king's head. It pleases and delights. and gives light, whithersoever the king goeth. So is "good fidelity." Blessed are all Servants who shew it! Blessed are all Servants who serve their own masters faithfully in the fear of GOD their Saviour! They are blessed themselves, and are a blessing to their masters. Even as blessed Joseph was a

blessing to his master Potifer, so are all faithful and religious servants a blessing to every house and family in which it pleases GOD to cause them to dwell. The Almighty saith to them, as He did to Abraham, "I will bless thee and thou shalt be a blessing." If I were a master and had Servants, my prayer to GOD would be: "O Lord, bless my house with honest and religious Servants not with Servants, who are only faithful to me their earthly Master; but faithful towards Thee also, O Lord CHRIST: Thou GOD and Master and Judge of all." I will now finish with some words which St. Paul wrote

the christian bishop Titus: "Exhort Servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things not answering again: not purloining but shewing all good fidelity: that they may adorn the doctrine of GOD our Saviour in all things. For the grace of GoD that bringeth salvation. hath appeared to all men: teaching us,

that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world: looking for that blessed hope and the glorious appearing of the great GOD and our Saviour JESUS CHRIST, who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto Himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. These things speak and exhort."

PROVERBS xxiii. 27, 28.

A Whore is a deep ditch and a Strange Woman is a narrow pit. She also lieth in wait as for a prey, and increaseth the transgressors among

men.

1. THE character spoken of by Solomon in this Text, is one of the most foul and hateful in the sight of GOD, among such as can be found here on earth. When the Almighty by His pure Spirit wrote the blessed Scriptures, He moved holy men to write. in them many things concerning "the Whore" and "Strange Woman." In all these Scriptures the Lord has most plainly shewn us how utterly abominable is that black sin of whoredom, which is so dreadfully common in every
