His languid eyes were fix'd on me,
As near the cross I stood.

3 Not even at my latest breath,
Can I forget that look!

It seem'd to charge me with his death,
Though not a word he spoke.

4 My conscience felt and own'd the guilt,
And fill'd me with despair;

'Twas for my sins his blood was spilt, For them he suffer'd there.

5 A second look he gave, which said,
I freely all forgive,

My blood was for thy ransom paid,
I die that thou mayst live.
6 My heart replied, I do believe,-
Through thee I am forgiven;
The witness then I did receive
That I was born for heaven.

HYMN 310.

Surveying his sinful and renewed state in contrast. 8.8.6.

1

WHEN mem'ry turns to by-gone days,

There's much for sorrow, much for praise:

My heart was full of sin;

But Jesus came, the veil withdrew,-
In mercy did my heart renew,

And plant his love within.

2 This tongue, with blasphemies defiled, These feet, to erring paths beguiled, In heavenly league agree:

Who could believe these lips would praise, Or think that I from sinful ways

Should ever turn to thee?

3 These eyes that once abused the light, Now lift to thee their watery sight, And weep a silent flood;

These hands are raised when I'm at prayer;
O may they never cease to bear

Their part in doing good.

4 These ears, that once could entertain
The midnight oath, the festive strain,
Around the sinful board,

Now deaf to all th' enchanting noise,
Avoid the throng, detest their joys,
And long to hear thy word.

5 Thus art thou served in every part;
Proceed, bless'd Lord, to cleanse my heart,-
From all its dross refine :

1

May grace my every power control,
Anew create my body, soul,

And keep them ever thine.

HYMN 311.

His conversion reviewed to encourage penitents. C. M.

WHEN God reveal'd his gracious name
To my believing heart,

With joy I did his praise proclaim;
The change appear'd so great.
2 The world the new creation saw,
And said it was of God;

And I replied, you all may know
The same, through Jesus' blood.
3 The Lord can clear the darkest skies,-
Can give us day for night;

Make drops of sacred sorrow rise
To rivers of delight.

4 Let all who sow in sadness, wait,
In faith, the harvest-home;
Nor reckon theirs a hopeless state:
The reaping-time will come.

5 As Christ declareth mourners blest,
Their hearts shall gladden'd be;

Whene'er their faith in him shall rest
He'll set their spirits free.

HYMN 312.

His vow to be the Lord's remembered and hailed, L. M.

[ocr errors]

my

HAPPY day that fix'd my choice
On thee, my Saviour and God!
Well may this glowing heart rejoice,
And tell its raptures all abroad.
2 O happy bond, that seals my vows
To him who merits all my love!
Let cheerful anthems fill his house,
While to that sacred shrine I move.
3 'Tis done, the great transaction's done;
I am my Lord's, and he is mine;
He drew me, and I follow'd on,

Charm'd to confess the voice divine.
4 Now rest, my long-divided heart,
Fix'd on this blissful centre, rest,
Nor ever from thy Lord depart:
With him of every good possess'd.
5 High heaven, that heard the solemn vow,
That vow renew'd shall daily hear,
Till in life's latest hour I bow,

And bless in death a bond so dear.

HYMN 313.

I.. 19. Happy he who has a saving knowledge of Christ. L.M. 1 HAPPY the man that finds the grace,

The blessings of God's chosen race,

The wisdom coming from above,
The faith that sweetly works by love.
2 Happy, beyond description, he

Who knows" the Saviour died for me,"
The gift unspeakable obtains,

And heavenly understanding gains.

3 Wisdom divine! who tells the price Of wisdom's costly merchandise? Wisdom to silver we prefer,

And gold is dross compared to her. 4 Her hands are fill'd with length of days, True riches, and immortal praise,Riches of Christ, on all bestow'd, And honour that descends from God. 5 To purest joys she all invites,Chaste, holy, spiritual delights; Her ways are ways of pleasantness, And all her flow'ry paths are peace. 6 Happy the man who wisdom gains; Thrice happy, who his guest retains; He owns, and shall for ever own, Wisdom, and Christ, and heaven are one. MAN—THE SPIRIT'S INDWELLING EVIDENCES OF HIS ADOPTION, REGENERATION, ETC.

HYMN 314.

L. 86. Abridged. The need of the Spirit's witness felt and deprecated. S. M.

1

SPIRIT of faith, come down,
Reveal the things of God,

And make to me the Godhead known,

And witness with the blood:
"Tis thine the blood t' apply,

And give me eyes to see,
That he who did for sinners die,
Hath surely died for me.

2 No man can truly say

That Jesus is the Lord,
Unless thou take the veil away,

And breathe the living word:
Then, only then I feel

An int'rest in his blood;

1

And cry, with joy unspeakable,-
Thou art my Lord, my God!
3 O that the world might know
The all-atoning Lamb!
Spirit of faith, descend and show
The virtue of his Name;
The grace which all may find,
The saving power impart,
And testify to all mankind,
And speak in every heart.
HYMN 315.

L. 97. Praying for the inward Witness. 8. 8. 6, 8. 8. 6.
THOU great mysterious God unknown.-
Whose love hath gently led me on,
E'en from my infant days,-

Mine inmost soul expose to view,
And tell me if I ever knew
Thy justifying grace.

2 If I have only known thy fear,
And follow'd, with a heart sincere,
Thy drawings from above,-
Now, now the further grace bestow,
And let my sprinkled conscience know
Thy sweet forgiving love.

3 Short of thy love I would not stop,
A stranger to the Gospel hope,
The sense of sin forgiven;

I would not, Lord, my soul deceive,
Without the inward witness live,
That antepast of heaven.

4 If now the witness were in me,
Would he not testify of thee,

In Jesus reconciled?

And should I not with faith draw nigh,
And boldly, Abba, Father, cry,

And know myself thy child?
