A memorial book for the Jewish community of Bitola, previously known as Monastir. Relates the history of Jewish settlement in Macedonia from the ancient period, and in Monastir from the medieval period, until the destruction of the Jewish community during the Holocaust. Pp. 100-118 deal with the Holocaust period. In April 1941, when Macedonia was handed over to Bulgaria by the Germans, there were ca. 3,350 Jews in Bitola. In August 1942 the Bulgarians set up a commission for Jewish affairs, which was headed by Aleksandar Belev. While anti-Jewish laws already existed since 1938, Belev initiated and enforced additional laws, making life even more difficult for the Jews; he also directed the deportation of the Jews, which in Bitola took place in March 1943. The deportees were first sent to a camp in Skopje, and then to Treblinka, where they were killed. A small number of Jews managed to escape just before the deportation and joined partisan groups.
