The Lord's Supper.

For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. Gal. iii. 27.

Wherein [i.e. the ark] few, that is, eight souls, were saved by water, the like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us, (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ. I Pet. iii. 20, 21.

XIV. To the Lord's Supper.

Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said: Take, eat; this is My body. And He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying: Drink ye all of it; for this is My blood of the New Testament, which is shed for many, for the remission of sins. Matt. xxvi. 26-28.

The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? I Cor. x. 16.

We have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
I Cor. xii. 13.

Whoso eateth My flesh, and drinketh My blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. For My flesh is meat indeed, and My blood is drink indeed. He that eateth My flesh, and drinketh My blood, dwelleth in Me, and I in him. As the living Father hath sent Me, and I live by the Father; so he that eateth Me, even he shall live by Me. It is the Spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. John vi. 54-57, 63.

1 Though this be a figurative expression of faith in Christ's death, yet it is applicable to the particular exercise of it at the Lord's table.

I sat down under His shadow with great delight, and His fruit was sweet to my taste. to the banqueting-house, and His was love.
