for I sent you to him; and, lo, nothing worthy of death is done by him. I will, therefore, chastise him, and release him. (For of necessity he must release one unto them at the feast.) And they cried ́ out all at once, saying, Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas: (who for a certain sedition made in the city, and for murder, was cast into prison.)—See, my love, how vile the Jews were: Barabbas was a murderer, and they even preferred him to the holy and beloved Lamb of God! Pilate, therefore, willing to release Jesus, spake again to them. Butthey cried, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. He therefore found all attempts to prevail with this people vain : but he said unto them the third time, Why? what evil hath he done? I have found no cause of death in him. I will, therefore, chastise him, and let him go. And they were instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified: so that the voices of them, and of the chief priests, prevailed. And Pilate gave sentence, that it should be as they required. And he released unto them him that for sedition and murder was cast into prison,whom they had desired; but he delivered Jesus to their will.

As they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming out of the country; and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus. There followed him a great company of·

temple, praising and blessing God, giving him the glory, majesty, dominion, and power, both now and for ever.

"Tune your songs,

The Saviour lives again:

Not all the bolts and bars of death
The conqueror could detain.

High o'er the angelic bands he rears
His once dishonour'd head;

And through unnumber'd years he reigns,
Who dwelt among the dead.

With joy like his shall every saint

His empty tomb survey;

Then rise with his ascending Lord

To realms of endless day."

CONVERSATION RENEWED.

O Mamma, look at all those natives just arrived; have they heard of all the things you have told me of God, Mamma?

O no, my child; they are, I lament to say, in ignorance of these things.

Then, Mamma, when they die, will they go to heaven?

No person can go to heaven, but through the righteousness of Christ, my love.

But, Mamma, they have not heard the law which was given to Moses.

True, my love.

Why, then, you told me that unless I had been told the law, equity could not require my obedience of the law: for unless I possessed a knowledge of what you enjoined, Mamma, how could I be liable to punishment for disobedience ?

It is most gratifying to me, my beloved child, to find that the most abstruse part of our conversation has been so retained. But all men, my dear child,

have received the law. The law of the Jews, which is called Levitical, because the tribe of Levi had charge of the law, was given by the voice of God, and written upon tables of stone; but God, my love, by the silent whisper of our consciences, writes it upon the tables of our hearts: so that the latter law may be called the law of nature. The law of nature is that knowledge eaten in the garden of Eden, my child, of good and evil.

All men know that benevolence, kindness, and truth are rewarded; that the opposite malignancy, eyil, and falsehood are punished; and every barbarous nation in the world is sensible of a God. This is the law of nature, which makes these poor natives amenable to God; and it is this knowledge, my sweet child, that occasions the great anxiety in the Christian world to convert the ignorant minds of these poor deluded people to the knowledge of the way of salvation through Christ, by which they may be saved.

Where did you learn this law of nature, my dear Mamma?

By hearing and the Scriptures, my child. It says, in the 2d Epistle of Paul to the Romans, 2d chapter: "As many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law, (meaning the law of

Moses ;) so that there is no question about their condemnation, and about the necessity of sending missionaries to them. For it says in the 10th chapter, that "whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? and how shall they preach, except they be sent? As it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring the glad tidings of good things!"

Then, Mamma, if faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God, why did not God send the gospel around the world?

He did, my love: Paul explicitly declares, in the 18th verse of the same chapter: "But I say, have they not heard? Yes, verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words to the end of the world."

How was it sent, Mamma?

By the prophets, my love, which is fully described in the chapter in question. The Jews were the teachers of the whole world. They were an example, and dispersed over the world to spread the word for in the 19th verse it says, " Did not Israel know? First, Moses saith, I will provoke you to
